Over the years I've learned to hold my tounge - fingers rather. I'll often find myself writing a response to a post or thread only to get halfway through, realise how retarded I'll sound and delete the entire thing. It's certainly saved me an enormous amount of embarrassment, so I'm somewhat content with lurking more than posting. Probably the reason I've got <200 posts even though i frequent TL a lot.

Eventually though, I just grind my teeth over how moronic some posters appear; this is essentially my top 5 list of irritating things I see on TL.net (and other forums to be fair) in no particular order:

1 - Complete lack of basic English. I understand that plenty of TLers aren't from English speaking backgrounds, but when I see 'United States' or 'United Kingdom' beside an illiterate post I want to rip my face off. Interchanging 'than' and 'then' turns my stomach, and some of the garbled crap that people post makes me feel stupider for reading.

2 - People who worship Day9. I'll get this out there: I love Sean Plott. I watch his dailies and enjoy them due to his charisma and thoughrough apporach. I don't take everything he says for granted or 100% truth, but for the most part I agree with him. What I can't stand though, are the legions of players who simply think the information Day9 provides them is fixing their game. Gives me flashbacks to the Combat-EX saga (though I in know way want to villainate Mr. Plott.) Hearing "DnD#165 showed how xyz is totally viable here..." in thread after thread annoys me, because I know the players making the posts don't understand the full implications of their suggestion in game.

3 - Endless balance whining. They game may be balanced, it may be nowhere near it. Regardless, there are top level players winning tournaments as each race option. While one race may be more or less dominant, good players can still win a consistant number of games on the underside of this 'imbalance'. Unless you're a top level player, you've really got no argument about balance, because there's too much you're already doing wrong as a player. My RL friends are always telling me how happy they are that patch x.y is fixing tanks/roaches/pylons and that the game will be much more balanced afterward. It frustrates the crap out of me, because they're nowhere near a level where balance means anything.

4 - People who don't read threads before posting. The post counts are high enough at the moment. If you want good discussion, add something new to the conversation instead of simply parotting your own unoriginal thoughts in the 24th page of a thread. I guess the problem is one that explodes, as the the longer the thread, the less enticed people are to actually read beyond the OP, and the result is just a landslide into a flame war.

5 - 'My APM is too low, how do i get it higher'. I don't like being annoyed at this type of poster, but I do. They don't understand that having a high APM is how you become a strong player. Sure, it helps to have quick hands and good coordination, but (as I'm sure you've all heard a million times) APM is simply a representation of how active you are, and how quickly you're executing necessary commands. SC2 in particular lends itself easily to players with minimal handspeed; things like automine and MBS obviously take an enormous chunk out of multitasking, so it's really easy to achieve a 'respectable' rank with little physical prowess.

Now that's a load off isn't it? And I agree with everything you've said. In fact, I consider 80-90% of TL as useless posters who merely state the obvious in every post they make. Oh how hypocritical of me.

Oh man this is what happens when you say you dont like others spelling/grammer.

I agree with you on several posts, but I disagree with others. I find the average level of English competence to be satisfactory.

In regards to point 2, the information day9 is giving to every one, is increasing our ability to play, but only if you actively listen and use that information to change your play. The problem arises when you do take the info for granted and just blindly parrot what he says.

Point 3. Oh god yes I couldn't agree more

4 im kinda neutral. It becomes impossible to read some of these 25+ page threads, and a large number of the comments are not worth reading. The only thought I really feel people should keep to them selves is when they think stuff is imba(see point 3). Also this post could be categorized as one of those posts that annoy you, after all I am just parroting off my opinion

5. Let the noobs be noobs, I have no problem explaining to them exactly what you did in point 5, I just don't want them making new topics and clogging up the boards. Im not in favor of having a elite-only forum or anything, but perhaps making it so you need 50 posts before creating a thread would help.

I prettymuch am in the same boat as the OP when it comes to being constantly annoyed by such things.

Actually back in the day it wasn't possible to search for posts "by username" so typing your name in every post was a good way to search for old posts you made.

As much as I hate the amount of balance whining one can find here, I disagree with the general "Unless you're a top level player, you've really got no argument about balance" statement. For a game to appeal to the masses (which is not only the aim of blizzard, but it's also the feature that made BW as successful a competitive sport as it is), it has to be balanced on several skill levels. If after a certain similar amount of effort invested into learning to play (and similar dexterity involved) one can carry out superior strategies with one race, then that is imbalanced. Of course this effort and "dexterity" is very hard to measure objectively, as the skills necessary to keep up with each other are fundamentally different for each race (the macro mechanics and army characteristics make for very different skills required).

Of course, one thing is the balance between players on a simimlar level, and an other one is balance between the validity of strategies. If cheese, regardless of level, is too hard to overcome efficiently, the dominant strategies will eventually become cheesy, and the game turns into a coin toss, which has a game-breaking effect not only on the players, but the spectators as well.

What makes BW so spectacular is that it has a lot of clear "stable" competitive levels where balance is great, with a rewarding yet steep learning curve, with a very high ceiling overall. And in this regard, there might very vell be imbalances in SC2 (and to some much lesser extent, maybe even in BW), but whining about them and discussing them are two very different things.

Add:

6. People who don't read forum rules before making posts (i.e. add replays and your own analysis of a game when asking for help, people who post one-liners).
7. People who don't....fucking....use...search.

Include those, then you and I will be on the same page.

I'm okay with people not speaking great English as long as they fucking TRY. If they're intentionally typing in shitspeak and it's making whatever they've written more difficult to read, then I get annoyed at them.

I'm in agreement with the Day[9] thing also. I love him, but not every word that leaves his mouth is pure, irrefutable gold. Day[9] gets stuff wrong too, fellursz.

In all fairness, they should be aware of dictionary.com

Sorry, but I'm also ticked off by those who make dozens of spelling, syntax, or grammar errors. I understand if you have a few in a long post; we don't need to be perfect. However, the least that people could do is type words out (i h8 wen ppl use abbrevs! lolz!) or not make mistakes in every single sentence!

And it's even worse when people claim they're intellectual or if they're trying to get an important point across (like in a debate), yet they still can't type anything correctly. It doesn't automatically nullify their point, but from a peripheral point of view, it makes you appear far less intelligent than you surely are.

I'd rather have that than idiots who can't even construct a logical argument. Like people who cherry pick statistics when they benefit an argument, but ignore them when it goes against their views (any VIck fanboys in the NFL, who love to cite great statistics for his two games this year but ignore statistics that say he's %11 above his career passing percentage; the race statistic threads, etc)

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=154154&currentpage=24

7mk is a good example of that.

There's no such a thing as "broodwar blog", the blog section doesnt belong to either game.

i think its pretty apparant if you mention dragoons or vultures in a blog you're talking about broodwar, and then some guy'll come in and say something about trying more void rays.

and no, thats an exaggeration, but i do want to punch then in the face. hard.
