some girls don't understand that watching a whole tv series on youtube = bad for usage u can limit her download speed, u could have a usage monitor... but in all honesty theres not much you can do. in my house it seems to be a race to use as much as you can and then its no more games and downloads for the rest of the month

mm cant help you out here ive never had that kind of problem and i do live in a 3rd world place.. we dont have any kind of 100gig cap and i pay 15 dollars worth of broadband. Its hard to believe that australia has such bad internet service. Maybe putting a password to the internet provider? or wi fi connection? do you have a wi fi connection?

The next step after verification of who is using the bandwidth and more so how much they are using, is to purchase a new router (or update your current one - NOTE: This is very dangerous with some models of router check carefully the documentation at the second link [DD-WRT] as some rare cases can cause a router to stop working altogether) and install on the router DD-WRT (or similar third-party router package). This will allow to do port throttling, and a wide array of other traffic control features - you will be able to set a 25 GB a month cap on the network cable that is connected to 'Jane's' computer and provided your friend is the only one who knows the password there is nothing she can do about it, other than cut back, or pay for an additional connection herself. Hope this helps, links below: Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 DD-WRT Third-Party Router Firmware Edit: In Canada our internet is actually ranked 115th world-wide in terms of quality. 60 GB a month cap is considered MAMMOTH (and comes at a premium price of 60 dollars a month). 99 GB is 99 dollars a month. Speed ranges from 1.5 MBPS to 25 MBPS (but 15 - 25 MBPS Fibre is available in 'select' meaning very very few regions) and also speeds above 10 MBPS only became available less than a year ago. Edit 2: Oh yea PM me for more info if needed.

To the OP: That plan sounds awesome. Sometimes you have to do things like this to make people understand.

My suggestion is that since she's not paying for the internet (at least I don;t think?), that she doesn't have the liberty to be using up all the usage, so If your friend wants to pull the plug, then he has the right to do it. Also, make sure you talk to her about this issue, several times if it doesn't get through the first time.

There have been 3 months where I've hit the 75% point a day or 2 before a new month. To the OP: That plan sounds awesome. Sometimes you have to do things like this to make people understand. I can't get close to my limit because my net is so damn slow (I've got the 'portable internet' wireless BS, because for some reason I can't get a wired connection) lol.

Anyway, you have a few options. I personally would explain and ban use of p2p or at least explain very carefully when and when it is not okay to have it on. You can't do IP level filtering because Chinese softwares like Xun Lei are designed to go around that. And there are things like PPmate or PPstream which good luck trying to explain to them that they can't use that. Okay here is what you do, this is how I solved the problem. 1. Search around and see if you are in TPG's exchange area. I just changed over to their full unlimited (NO DOWNLOAD LIMIT) internet for $75 dollars a month. 2. Don't waste your money on any fancy modem unless you are willing to pay a lot more. Chinese hackery eat those alive. 3. Explain to everyone the situation and dictate when and when it is not okay to have p2p going on, say that if it is not improved by certain date and date, the person either have to leave the house or get their own internet connection. Simple, effective and to the point. I did this when I was sharing a house with 4 fobs, they would go nuts until the limit is up, so I made one couple getting their own and its being okay ever since.

I agree with all those suggestions on letting her know and just pulling the plug all together but it seems like the agreement was that her rent covered internet usage aswell? its just that she is not using her fair share. And yeah I have also heard many times about guys who live together and just race to download as much as they can, humans disgust me sometimes i swear, why can't people just have some common sense and common decency. Big thanks to Sechuan Panda Tell me does this network monitor needs to be installed on her computer too? If not, will we be able to monitor her usage remotely and find out how much she has used over time if we were to leave the computer on? I have a Linksys WRT something.... I might trying that firmware aswell if network monitor dosn't do the job. Look mate, don't go down that route. Installing monitor software on people's computer is offensive and you create an air of mistrust and that monitoring software is completely useless because you don't have 24/7 to make sure it works. Trust me, I know, I've done it before. The best that you can do is get a cheap WRT54GL and flash the firmware so you can do traffic shaping per IP but that's a lot of work and easy for someone who knows how to get around the traffic shaping. Don't even argue against the fob about internet being part of the bill or whatever, give her an ultimatum, if she get her own connection, deduct $50 dollars from her rent or leave. It's not like she is going to sue you or anything, room mates rely more on each other's honestly and understanding than anything else.

The only way to get the full terrabyte (500gb peak, 500 offpeak) is to bundle with phone but that's not a massive deal since you can do both with no contract. I just recently switched to the 200/200 unbundled plan. In a house of ~5 people who contribute to heavy usage this is a lifesaver as we were on 70/90 previously and getting capped half way through the month
