If you like Mahavishnu, you would probably enjoy most of the good real jazz players such as Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans, Miles, etc... would highly recommend checking them out. For fusion though, it's hard to beat Guthrie Govan. Greg Howe, Allan Holdsworth, and Eric Johnson are all very good also.

Weather Report - Sweetnighter (lot of good weather report albums with similar sound this is just fav of mine)

Just few of my fav should start you off well, if you haven't already give Birds of Fire from Mahavishnu a listen as well

Heres afew of my favorites.

CAB (Tony MacAlpine, Bunny Brunel and Dennis Chambers)

(keep in mind, its hard to find their good songs on youtube, but their CDs are amazing, so pick them up! theres about 4 of them)

Casiopea & T-SQUARE (First two Japanese Fusion bands, in the 70s)

(They are more smooth-jazz than fusion, but have some fusion elements in some songs.. Def VERY good band either way though.)

And my absolute favorite, is Tetsuo Sakurai's band (he was the bassist from Casiopea). Just all around amazing fusion/shred guitar/beautiful melodies..

I'm a little unclear as to what is considered jazz fusion... the wikipedia entry has only confused me further. Does Medeski Martin and Wood count? They are my recommendation to the op anyways.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Glad to see more people interested in real music.
Im kind of an aficionado of this genre and progressive British Rock as well.
for fusion you must know all of the following (everything else is derived from these legends):

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Proto fusion album features John McGlaughlin on guitar (and actually has a track named after him)

Anything by Mahavishnu Orchestra (Mahavishnu was John McGlaughlin's meditation name btw)

Frank Zappa Albums from his big band/fusion era (zappa is the most important composer of the 21st century):
Hot Rats, Waka Jawakka, Grand Wazoo, Apostrophe(*), Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All (featuring fusion legends George Duke on keys and one time Mahavishnu member Jean-Luc Ponty)

(if you only watch one video let it be REDUNZL above!)

U.K. (after King Crimson was disbanded by R Fripp bassist John Wetton recruited Bill Bruford to play drums. He brought his mate A Holdsworth in and Keyboardist Eddie Jobson)

Alan Holdsworth (here playing with drummer Chad Wackerman of Zappa fame)

Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, Genesis drummer Bill Bruford's solo fusion group. Holdsworth on guitar)

Steve Hacket Voyage of the Acolyte
Genesis guitarist Steve Hackket's first solo album

Return to Forever! You will not be disappointed by... anything. Really anything released by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, among others released in the late 60's - 70s will be good for you. Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, mentioned earlier in the thread, is commonly accepted to be the album that "began" the fusion era. I would also highly recommend you check out Stanley Turrentine, (esp. Sugar) if you like fusion, you will probably like his style as well. For a little more modern taste, check out the Brecker Brothers.

Have Some Skunk Funk.

that tetsuo sakurai video melted my face.
it's a little too shred cheese oriented for my taste but holy shit the black guitarist's whammy legato, tap and sweep-picking is unreal. like holdsworth meets vai

you can't really go wrong with weather report or return to forever...

I don't know if this band is really jazz 'fusion' per se, but I love this guy (Ryota Nozaki)

fun nerd fact: The drummer (nicknamed Kalta) did a lot of work with Yasunori Mitsuda, fairly famous composer who scored a lot of Squaresoft's games

You can't forget the "creator" of Jazz Fusion Miles Davis on the "Bitches Brew" album, you should really listen to this guy , from here I would suggest every artist that plays in the band called A guitar Supreme Album Giant Steps in Fusion or maybe under the Jeff Richman name and also Fusion for Miles also by Jeff Richman.
Greg Howe is great too, Alain Caron and many others, but really go from the start of all with Miles

yea, everyone who knows knows that Miles created this style. But the proto-fusion of miles is not really "Jazz-fusion" as much as it is Miles Davis's virtuosity on display.

No one is taking anything away from M.Davis but The OP seems to want to hear guitar-based Fusion from it's fully-developed prime, i.e. MgGlaughlin, Holdsworth, Zappa. Afterall, he did mention Mahavishnu himself in the OP.

Yea I understand your point, but still it never hurts to open a bit the discussion, I also mentioned 2 albums that contain at least 10 or 12 different guitar artists that play Jazz Fusion .
I just thought he might enjoy Miles

I believe that is more Nu Jazz. Essentially a form of jazz fusion except it mixes jazz with house/soul/funk etc

Anything with Chick Corea/Return To Forever. Especially Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, that was the record that got me into the world of jazz. It's the best mix of rock and jazz ever made.

But on the topic of Chick Corea, I can't resist posting this:

Thanks for all the recommendations guys .

Btw what about Santana? I heard he does some really nice funk / jazz fusion as well. All I've heard from him is the album supernatural though, which is mainly guitar driven mexican rock.

yeah, I knew it wasn't really jazz fusion. forgot nu jazz was what I was looking for. Either way, great stuff.

As I said definitely get on some Chick Corea, Return to Forever. Weather Report is great for anyone to cut their teeth on some fusion. Oh, you might want to check out Herbie Hancock's Headhunters too.

Nu Jazz is more of an umbrella term, but usually tends to be lighter and more...preppy?? than jazz fusion, so its not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks for the recommendations though
