I got my first job at 16 as a lifeguard for a private swim club that my family's been members of for years, which got me a second lifeguarding job last summer, which actually helped me get my current job on-campus working in a computer lab fixing shit up there (during the interview my boss seemed more interested in the fact that I was a lifeguard too, since she was when she was younger also). For 4 years in high school I worked as "RTS" whcih is the resident technology assistants which basically just help out the IT guys at my school fix minor problems so they don't have to deal with all the requests, this looked good on my resume for my on-campus job since its exactly the same thing, with a bit more software involved.

Now I'm sitting pretty at that job, haven't had to worry about a more professional job yet, since i'm only enterring my 2nd year of college now. Will have to soon though.

One thing that's helped my job hunt has been creating and using a Linked In account I only have 14 connections but I've had job possibilities come from there already in only 2 months of creating an account.

I'm in a very similar boat though, I've just finished a B.S in IT. I've been living with my parents as I finished up summer classes this summer but now I'm done and will be needing to move out and find some full time work VERY soon. I haven't worked hard at all with job hunting so far but I have good friends. For some reason through my college years I became friends with alot of the higher achievement students and have made a point to stay in touch with them mainly through facebook and email. I share alot in common with them in terms of personality/mindset and I can only assume I would have had better grades if I didn't spend so many hours on SC through my college years rofl. (I finished with a fairly middle of the road gpa, averaged B's, graduated with a 3.1 gpa) So I have a pretty good network to work from in the DC area. Should be interesting when I go into job hunt mode when I get back from vacation.

I got hella lucky and have been working 3 years now as an audio/visual systems engineer and programmer. (c+)

how did I get the job? My neighbor was like "this lame ass place wants to bring me in for an interview as an intern"

I took a look at it. The company had 5 employees and I walked in to meet the owner. next thing I know I'm getting sat down for an interview and told I have the position if I want it, and when can I start. Now we're a 35 strong company and cranking out shit for MITRE, CACI, and a ton of federal govn't stuff. And I'm one of the most senior employees. Crazy as I'm in my younger 20s...working alongside people in their 40s/50s as their senior. They're all great folk though.

Anyhow, moral of the story - seize every opportunity you can. Might just get lucky!

In my experience, I feel that a degree is pretty much useless, employers these days really look for past relevant work experiences. You really need to accrue such experiences through summer jobs and internships, and many of which (especially the ones you do closer to graduation) can turn into full time offers. Also, internships give you the opportunity to network with people in the industry, and provide you the chance to demonstrate your capabilities through an extended period of time instead of one-hour interviews.

I got a bunch of really good offers during my last undergrad year thanks to past internships (I had two years of working experience at the time of graduation) some formally through interviews, some through personal connections.

I'm also pretty sure I got into grad school because of my work experience.
