After wringing my hands all night at work over what to do, I just decided to go ahead and switch from Java I to Java II. After going to the class today, I'm optimistic about my decision.

This was my day one of Java I but it was everyone else's day 2. They were doing a review of what they did previously in Java I, and it seemed they didn't get much farther than loops. Didn't even make it to arrays. I think they must of had a slow class or something. Going over what they were reviewing. I didn't feel lost. I recognized all the if and thens; all the brackets and semicolons seemed where I remembered them from C++.

Only thing that I might need to bone up on is using the Developer Kit and how to get a project going, but the logic and syntax shouldn't be a big deal.

The other side of the coin is that had to drop Brit Lit(which I was kind of looking forward to), and added Music Appreciation(which seems like a waste of time). I missed the first two days of MUS Appr so I hope the instructor is cool and lets me slide right in on day 3. We'll see how that goes tomorrow.

Not a bad day, but I'm really tired. No real chance to reflect and analyze things in this episode, just rehashing events.

First day of Java all together? Where do you go to school? When I took Java I last year we didn't start doing loops until like a month in to the course. Took my class the whole first month to actually understand the concept of objects and classes. Boy were they stupid -_-;;

First day of Java II. This is a second semester course. I expected them to be farther along or maybe doing things I was out of practiced with in a second semester course, but I guess I'll be fine.

Plus there is a serious handicap to the pace here with how they do Java I. People like Math majors and Secondary Education majors need one semester of programming for their degree. They really should be taking something like Intro to Programming(Visual Basic), but they sometimes just jump into Java I. My guess is that the people who aren't Computer Science or Information Systems majors kind of slow the class down. It's a bad way to do things, but I think the policy is being set up by people who don't understand computers so much.

Its interesting hearing about different schools CS programs. CS2 at RIT(my school) is "Students will learn how to design a solution to a problem by reusing existing components and creating new components using inheritance. Other topics include exception handling, files/streams, collections, threads and thread synchronization, graphical user interfaces (GUI's), networking, and event-driven programming."

We do touch all these topics, but don't really go into much depth with them. But then again we use quarters not semesters, so we go through all these topics in 3 months.

Its easy to see why CS2 is considered the weed out course at my school.

Wait wait wait... so during whole semester, the most advanced thing they covered were loops? O_O
Even for a total beginner... that's incredibly slow

That's basically CS2 at washington university in st louis as well.

No offense but loops are incredibly basic... I can't believe that would be an end of semester topic.
