Your vote: Which Laptop?

(Vote): Acer

(Vote): Gateway

I needed a Laptop for school and I want to be able to play SCII, so my friend recommended the last two, and I liked the Acer so I threw that in there. I know there are a lot of computer smart people on here, so please help me make a decision! Which is the best bang for the buck laptop for schoolwork(mostly) and some casual gaming?

P.S. The only thing about the gateway that gets to me is the size. So it's already sorta low on my list unless it is overwhelmingly voted on.

You want a 5650-based laptop for SC2 rather than a GT330-based one, so I'd go with one of the last two. The difference between at 17.3" screen and a 15.6" is pretty significant, so it's a question of how you plan to you your laptop.

First off, just comparing

1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157293
2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101230

They both have the same vid card. (1) has a quad-core 2.0ghz. I would rather use the Intel Core i5 450M(2.4GHz) of (2). Also, (2) has a larger screen and better resolution. It has a smaller hard drive yes, but that's not important. 500gb vs 640gb is like lol, and it won't affect performance.

The 5650 which both laptops use is approximately equivalent to the card my computer has, so you should be able to run in full High settings, and probably higher, since I am running full High at 1920x1080. One noticeable thing is that on my computer, if I run in Windowed(Maximized) mode, vid card fail begins to show up, so I have to run in non windowed mode. This might not be a problem for you due to the lesser resolution.

The Acer has a slightly better video card, but as it's resolution is as bad as (1), it's really up to you. At any rate, you will probably end up running with settings at mostly high, some settings above that, regardless of which computer you get, so it ends up being a choice of screen size and resolution. If you want more of both, then get (2).

I would avoid HP unless you like bloatware. Also, the HP pavilion line is prone to overheating; mine meets the minimum requirements for SC2 and runs it fairly smoothly.. for about 4 minutes before it overheats and crashes.

Bloatware is easily fixed by reformatting upon purchase. Also, can't say I've had any problems with HP computers overheating. Worst thing that can happen is you add some exterior cooling.

I don't need the Laptop to run SCII on High or Ultra or anything. Low-Medium is fine too. Just as long as I can play it and not have the computer crash for overheating or any of that crap.

@ED- Thank you for the comparison! The only thing holding me back from the Gateway is its huge size. 17.3 isn't that small o.O. Taking that into consideration, and what I wrote earlier, would me having the best resolution really be worth getting the bigger sized laptop? Since I plan to use this mainly for schoolwork, I would prefer the Laptop to be quick, and have videos and sound at good resolutions in case of presentations/projects or online classes or anything like that. Which would you prefer knowing this?

@AB- Yeah I read that as well, but would a Laptop cooler not help any?

The Acer is inferior to both other choices. It is slightly more expensive while its 330m is slightly worse than the HD 5650. It also has only 500gb compared to the 640gb of the other 15.6" laptop.

The hp and the gateway have the same graphic card and their processors have basically the same performance. So the question boils down to:
What do you prefer:
- 17.3" display with 500 GB HDD
- 15.6" display with 640 GB HDD

I would take the bigger display since I cannot imagine gaming on a small screen.
So my recommendation is the gateway.

About the sizes...

I know someone with a 17 inch MBP and it isn't that much bigger/heavier overall than my 15 inch but the display is definitely noticable.

It all depends on where you see yourself using it. If you are mostly just taking it place to place in a bag and using it on a desk or something then get the bigger one. If you are travelling a lot and going to be using it on the train/bus/plane then get the smaller one.

To all the people voting for the Acer, could yall offer some explanation? I'd like to have some reasoning before I make a purchase!

I highly doubt it ^^

I see that you are highly concerned with the size of your laptop. Normally it's absolutely no problem to carry around your 17 inch laptop. It's not like you'll get tired because of it after a 20 min walk. However, the 15 inch is of course both slightly smaller and lighter, and some people might indeed feel a difference in comfort when carrying as well as when using (e.g. you have really small tables in the lecture hall, where the 15" would fit but not the 17").

Generally I still prefer the bigger screen, but if you are going to take your laptop with you everyday, you should take a look at those specifications:
- HP 15" 5.46 lbs. 14.88" x 9.65"
- Gateway 17" 7.27 lbs. 16.30" x 10.80"

Definitely get the gateway, since (as people have already said) it has the biggest screen; its specs are also very good. The difference in hard drive memory and weight is negligible.
Failure is not falling down over and over again. Failure is refusing to get back up.

Will a bigger screen be better for a laptop?
I'm sorry for all the badgering.I'm just really clueless on laptops :[
And for those who have owned different screen sizes. Is there really a big difference between a 15 and 17 inch when at school?

We used to have a 15" and a 17" laptops and when sitting in front of both, I could clearly feel the difference in size. The large screen was simply much more convenient for gaming, browsing, writing and basically everything.
However, the few times I took my 17" laptop to university, it was very uncomfortable. We used to have those tiny tables in the lecture hall, which were exactly the size of my laptop and using it there was a pain in the ass. When sitting on a normal table (in the university) there was no problem, but honestly its size made me never again take it to the lectures (I didn't really need it there anyway). However, on those tiny tables even a normal laptop felt huge. At some point people brought only tiny netbooks with them...
