assuming both can play sc2 at a ~highish resolution which one would be better? can they both play sc2 at highest resolution?

you seem like a bit of a newbie if you're going to go for a desktop, its always better to custom build your own instead of getting an expensive "gaming computer" yeah the second one is slightly better in few areas, but they're generally the same the first one has a better motherboard though

PM someone from those threads and they will probably write you up a perfect build

Although both have the same shitty video card and a low power PSU. It won't be running SC2 on high resolutions, and will probably be unable to have the shaders turned up past medium. You won't be playing on high, that's for sure, and definitely not on higher resolutions. So you could get them and pay extra for a video card and upgrade the PSU a little bit to maybe 500W-600W. Personally the 2nd one (iBUYPOWER one) seems like a better deal, and you won't be saving much money building your own, as it comes with Windows 7 and has everything prebuilt for you. EDIT: So yeah, if you want high settings you will be paying more for the additions you'll need, so it's up to you if you want to build yourself or go with this. I personally don't think you'll be saving much money, assuming you have a copy of Windows around you can use.

Get one in the Radeon HD 4000 family, preferably above 4600 numbers. They aren't expensive and I'm sure run SC2 just fine, probably not on max unless you get the 4890, but better than that 220 will. It will add at around 50$-100$ to the bill though, and with the PSU you can't go too high up there unless you want to add a new one of those, which means reconnecting all the power and that may take you to where you don't want to be.

Yeah, if someone builds it for you, it won't be as expensive. But if that's not available, it really isn't going to be that much more expensive. I'm currently trying to make a rough equivalent on Newegg (you can always go elsewhere) and it's turning out to be about the same price, although some things will be better than what the prebuilt has and the better GPU won't ramp the cost up.

And lets say I dont upgrade right away will I be able to play at least some current gen games at ~mediumish? It should be okay for low gaming. You can probably play most games on low but that's it and that is solely based on the fact the video card is a low end card meant probably just for basic video needs for general use, like online videos and running your OS's GUI. However, it is decently expandable. You can add two more 2GB RAM sticks without the need to replace any (assuming you can figure out what RAM is in there) and you can just replace the video card with with a new one. It also has a keyboard and mouse that comes with it, and as far as I know no monitor, so you'll need a new monitor. It already has the hard drive, disc drive, probably a fan or two, and everything you'll need, including Windows. I won't lie, building your own will be cheaper, but again, if that's not available, then this won't hurt you financially as some may be leading you to believe. EDIT: I have to go now, so I can't continue to help you for about an hour or so. Good luck.

The second one has free RAM slots if you want to upgrade the amount of ram in the future (although 4GB should probably cover you for a while). The first one does not. Both machines have a PCIx 2.0 slot, so if you want to swap out for a new video card you can do that. The second one has a better power supply (I guess? Just says '480W' ), so you're more likely to be able to power a new card in the second one, although you might end up needing a new PSU with either, depending on the new card you get. And lets say I dont upgrade right away will I be able to play at least some current gen games at ~mediumish? Yeah. Medium settings, probably. GT 220 is pretty bad. If you upgrade the graphics card in the future, you'll be able to run things on high.

Here's an example build that I just put together for you based on the 2nd option. I added a 5770 which is a much better card, and the PSU/RAM/Mobo are probably of much better quality as well. HDD - $55 RAM - $100 Case + DVD drive - $58 PSU + Windows - $140 CPU + Mobo + GPU - $414 Total comes to $766 after rebates. The better graphics card alone is worth $170. It might seem like a daunting task, but its really not that difficult. There are plenty of guides to help you along the way, like this. Do check out http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=137554 as well. (Side note, that build is just an example, it probably needs some tweaking. I was just showing what you could get for a similar price)

Buy the prebuilt he based it off, and then buy the same video card. It will cost you $800+.
