So like the post says I need a new keyboard, I have been using the same razor keyboard for 3 years now and It finally died, no thanks to me.

I did something I never do I slammed my hand down into it... Twice. I was playing ladder games today thinking I was close to getting out of gold and I played 4 games in a row where I was rushed, either 2 gated, or 3 rax. Anyway I scouted it every game made the counter build if you can call it that, and mis microed every single time. Mostly revolving around missing a forcefield or not getting it off in time.

Anyway I was thinking of the new SC2 razor keyboard. Since I planned on getting the headset also and I can blink all cool like. But I am open to sugestions, I have a cheep crappy keyboard that I can use until I get new one. Although the game my keyboard finally game out on was PvT and he 3rax me while I was doing a phoenix build and scouted it walled off with a pylon to buy time and held off his rush, expanded used the 4 phoenix I had made to do some harass and as his second attack was comeing I had just finished storm and My keyboard dies. LOL I thought I had lost that game so hard but was able to wipe up what was left and he left, I felt so lucky.

thanks

Onegu

fuck razer keyboards. they are garbage.

I used to have a razer Turantula and always hated it. When it finally broke I did a ton of research. I knew nothing about quality keyboards. I decided to buy a filco tenkeyless with brown switches which can be purchased at http://www.elitekeyboards.com. They are a bit pricey, but these things are built like fucking tanks. No way they will break. Another option is the steelseries 7g. However, they only come with black switches which have a lot more resistance then the brown switches.

There may be some cheaper mechanical keyboards on newegg, but the filco and steelseries 7g are probably higher quality.

You can do some research yourself into keyboards at http://www.geekhack.org. Tons of mechanical keyboard reviews and other information that is actually pretty sweet.

all you need to know

i own a Cherry G80-3000 which I found was the most reasonably priced for how competitively I play. its pretty doable. especially if you were originally going to buy razor garbage.

You have 2 choices, mechanical keyboards or scissor switch keyboards. Mechanical keyboards are very high quality, needs very little force to press the keys, and have very good response. I would recommend the Steelseries 7g. If you are used to razer scissor switch keyboards, you might want a Logtitech 920. It is probably the best scissor switch keyboard. The advantage is that the pressing distance is short so some people like it.

I would also recommend a filco keyboard.

I'm using a Filco Majestouch Tactile Click Blue Cherry NKRO, but I wouldn't recommend the blue switches if you're using the computer next to someone who doesn't like the sound of typewriter keys. But if you're REALLY a dirty south boss/baller, you'd buy one anyway and tell them to cry more about how they can't sleep, like I did when I was living in my one-room dorm.

edit: I'm not an asshole, I just learned to hate my roommate for several reasons.

I just recently bought the Majestouch Tactile Touch NKRO (cherry brown switches) from the link below:

http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=filco_keyboards,majestouch_104key&pid=fkbn104meb

love it so far, definitely the most solid keyboard I've ever owned, it feels and types great, and finally I have a keyboard that has nkey rollover. The only possible drawbacks are 1.) price and 2.) key click noise, it is noticeably louder than the cheap membrane switches that are in most cheap keyboards these days.

Look for a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX brown or black switches. You can find them at the websites listed above. Here's a great resource on mechanical keyboards, a very good read:

Just get a dell or ibm keyboard T___________T 15$ or less.

Yes. I am planning to whip out my old dell keyboard. Its missing some keys, dirty as hell, and the letters on WASD is kind of faded, but it has never failed me. Honestly, I think getting over priced keyboards are a little over rated. Whatever keyboard gives you that casual/gaming comfort is always a plus for me.

The problem with those old keyboards is that they're cheap, unreliable pieces of shit. If a good keyboard is something you want, you'll have to pay for it, and there is no substitute for a good mechanical keyboard.

mechanical keyboards are extremely overrated... i should know i own Majestouch Tactile Touch NKRO. Just get a normal cheap one. I use a cheap one at night just so i dont wake up my girlfriend with all the noise, and its not like it gets in the way of your play in any way at all. They are mainly for expert typists and with the normal keyboard there is much better variety so you can find something that is comfortable which is the most important thing.

i got a razer tarantula when compUSA went under back in 2007 and was pleased with it until it broke earlier this year, but i definitely don't think it was worth the $100 msrp.

Well when they're saying 'old dell' or 'old IBM', they could be referring to the old Dell and IBM mechanical keyboards which are pretty much the diametric opposite of what you're saying above. In particular, the IBM model M is considered to be one of the absolute overengineered design classics, those things are sturdy as hell and last for years and years (there are still plenty of IBM model Ms in constant use today, 15 years after IBM stopped making them) and they've never been cheap. When they came with new PCs back in the day, they would fetch about $250, half the price of the whole machine, and the original factory in Kentucky (under new ownership) still makes slightly updated model Ms with the brand name Unicomp, at http://www.pckeyboard.com. They're still by no means cheap (and if you're ordering from Unicomp, make sure you pick a buckling spring board, not their quiet rubber-dome models).

Of course, most mechanical keyboards are noisy, so be sure you're not going to use it in a place where your high-APM clicking and clacking is likely to upset people.

I know, but the added "$15 or less" pretty much guarantees it's just a cheap rubber dome keyboard.

What i mean is any logitech or razer or whatever brand new high quality keyboard aren't really better than the very standard ones. I know it cauz my father works in an engineering industry, so we have plenty of very good ibm or dell keyboard that got replaced due to popular demand. But the old ones are still ruling.
Actually i'm still using a dell since like 8 or 9 years. And it still works like before (except maybe some of the keys where i used to smash while i was mad at starcraft :D, still even with that i'm pretty sure the logitech wouldn't survive at all).

Oh, in that case i agree. I thought you were trying to say it was better than a good mechanical keyboard >.>

I'm sure you'll like it. It's not quite what I would buy (mostly because I think anything marketed at gamers is overpriced, and sometimes total shit), but it's a good keyboard nonetheless. Make sure to use the PS/2 connector if your computer supports it.

Copied and pasted from another thread where I lawled at the "I LURVE MY CRAPPEH KEYBOARD" people:

For a very *standard* keyboard thats just a bit higher quality, quiet, backlighting, etc, I love my Saitek Eclipse II.

I recently upgraded (more like side-graded) to a razor Arctosa and I adore it. Very very sexy and great feel.

Edit: Lol at the people saying gaming keyboards are bad for gaming. Gaming keyboards are basically just among the nicest and most expensive keyboards you can get without going for something like a mechanical keyboard.

It might not have a significant benefit, but there's no way having a sexy, expensive, backlit, etc keyboard is going to be WORSE.

ps/2 else no n-key roll over haha,

The prob i have with cheap keyboards and alot of gaming keyboards - logitech's is their nkey roll over is only around the wasd block and i play on emulators and crap so sometimes i'm not always just using the wasd block.

Really i'm fine with the USB buffer system used in usb gaming keyboards, as long as it supports 6-key roll over with a modifier key i'm cool not like i have more then 5 fingers on any hand.

I do wonder if USB 3.0 will change anything, i know gaming headsets will really benefit from full duplex.

Really the reason why i like cheap gaming keyboards is it's flashy and usually quiet. Most mechanical switches are loud, and super costly.

With the exception of durability issues, the Lycosa/Arctosa are actually quite nice keyboards.

They aren't specifically marketed towards RTS games (otherwise they'd be mechanical), but for some people the slim key profiles are much much nicer to use than normal keys, and in the games where its allowed being able to make every single key a custom macro is pretty baller.

They're certainly better than your random ass $10 keyboards in general, although perhaps not with reference specifically to RTS games - even if its USB the Lycosa manages something like 5-key guaranteed rollover (i think) and can manage even more if you hit the 'predictable' keys together.

Currently contemplating a Filco. Thing is, I live in a house shared with 4 other students. The wall between my room and my next-door neighbor is so thin/flimy that, at night, you can understand conversations taking place in the other room. (Not during the day though, we generally have to raise our voices a bit to communicate;)).
It's not like there's no wall at all, but you can kind of compare it to communicating through a wooden front door.

So, are MX blues loud enough to keep my 'housies' awake at night? If so, I'll probably go for browns.
I'd hate to have to switch keyboards after 1am.

its been easier for me to maintain higher apm marks with less frustration with keyboards using scissor switches (or similar, as in the ones on laptops)

on the other hand, i've been using a used saitek keyboard with regular keys and i find it difficult
without a lot of effort

with longer fingers, i prefer to go for the less effort route, but i personally want to try a good mechanical one : ( just not with as robust keys as the ones i've been using

good luck to you !
