So I've been most of the summer without AC in the car. We took it in over the weekend and they told us they needed to replace a part to fix it (I recall this part being a converter of some sort). Anyhow, they siphoned essentially all my freon from the car, so I drove that week without using the AC/Fan at all.
Dropped it off last night with the promise of it being done by noonish today.
Somehow, they managed to break my clutch (it's an automatic, if anyone was wondering) while trying to fix all of this. I was also told (second hand) that the converter was fine, it was the clutch they needed to replace originally, but now they're apparently trying to find a replacement clutch at a junkyard (great). Now, at least part of that story is wrong. It's not possible that they both bought a new clutch, broke the existing one, and then needed to go find a 3rd one from the junkyard. So, I'm betting the original part being replaced was, in fact, the converter.
Now they also are attempting to charge us for the clutch they broke during their botched repair.
My question to anyone "in the know" -- is this total bullshit? Is it actually a semi-regular occurrence to break the clutch while trying to repair the AC? Are they just full of shit in general?

lol, I didn't even know there was a difference. That makes a lot more sense.

Common sense would tell me that you aren't responsible for paying for repairs to damage they caused.
Edit: I guess I posted this because your question is irrelevant, unless it's for your own curiosity.

Agreed, if it comes to it... Yell at them and tell them they are the idiots that broke it in the first place.

Well, I'm largely curious about how common an occurrence is it for them to break the clutch in this type of repair. Hoping someone here might have experience working at a repair shop.
Also angry in general about shoddy workmanship.

I'll ask my dad later cause hes an Automotive AC expert (but hes at work atm)..anyways, are you sure they weren't talking about the "fan clutch" and not the clutch, cuz thats a big part of AC system. There are also other "clutches" that are used. (I don't know much about cars though.
EDIT: I just realized what a strange word "clutch" is.

Also your story is ridiculously confusing to read. I've read it 3 times and can't get the gist of it. They are claiming they found your clutch needed to be replaced, so they bought a new clutch, replaced it, then went to work on the AC, broke the clutch they just installed, and are now charging you to find a new clutch from the junkyard?
Edit: Oh AC clutch LOL. Disregard everything I've said in this thread then.

As I understand it, they broke the clutch (presumably this mysterious "AC clutch") while trying to get the converter and the clutch apart, which is why I think part of the story I heard was wrong. I think it was, in fact, the converter that was the problem the whole time and they broke the clutch trying to get to it.
But, I'm getting this all 2nd or 3rd hand since they called while I was at work. I'll have to get more details later.

Did you sign anything allowing them to not be held responsible for stuff? If not, you should be able to make them fix it, with enough persuasion.

Also thought Powertrain Clutch, starting over.
By fan clutch they mean some heat driven system that allows the fan to spin a different speeds depending on how hot the engine is.

So yeah totally possible to break this while working on the AC, in the way that you could break anything while you were working in the engine compartment.
But still fuck that. I understand maybe paying for the part but not the labor.
