I admittedly don't have a lot of job experience but last week I was interviewed and to my surprise was hired on the spot. The lady told me I would be contacted "sometime" next week to be put into the system. It's now Thursday and I still haven't received a call and I'm starting to get somewhat anxious.

To top it off I got an email from their automated system telling me "The position in for which you applied for has been cancelled." Was it cancelled because I got the job or what?

So should I stop being so paranoid and just call them?

Yeah call them so you can get an answer. If the position was canceled, then you can move on. If you find out you still got the job, than congrats. Just don't keep waiting and worrying, that's the worst.

Don't call! If you do hellhounds will bite your head off!

no, seriously; just call, you have nothing to lose, you even win time by calling. dont be afraid, you live only once! no time to worry about such things

Call back; Most businesses are busy places, with more going on than just hiring (even in the HR depts.) A call back will be at worst viewed as a minor nuisance (which will be promptly forgotten/forgiven) or at best, an affirmation that you are REALLY interested in the position and that they hired an individual who takes the initiative and doesn't wait for the meal ticket to come to him/her.

However, do not call them repeatedly and become a true nuisance... no need to tick off co-workers before you even begin.

In general you have to be assertive when looking for jobs... especially today... always keep in touch with future and prospective employers.

My experience has been that they never call you back when they say they will. I had a job working for a multimillion dollar software company last summer (they are government subcontractors) and THEY didn't call me back. I had to call them every week for a month before they set up an interview for me. Of course I got hired immediately after the interview.

Calling once a week is respectful and it's a good idea. Otherwise, they WILL forget about you or push you to the bottom of their priorities list.

Call them immediately. I would never be upset about getting a followup call, especially the next week.

You see that a cute girl notices you. You play it cool and pretend to ignore her so she will want you more. In fact, she isn't even paying attention to you and never noticed you in the first place. You should have talked to her and gotten her number.

In this analogy, the cute girl is the interviewer, talking to her is calling the interviewer, and the number is the job.

Sorry baller.

I'd call back to confirm if you have not signed anything. At many places, they try to rush the hiring process to get someone in before the company freezes hiring and/or their department budget gets cut. More than likely they didn't make it in this case, and the position is no longer available. Sorry.

(Note: Admittedly, this is just based on my experience, including my current workplace. In addition, a few weeks ago I accepted a new job only to have them call back less than 24 hours later stating circumstances had changed and they must rescind the offer. Small sample size still though).
The melody of logic always plays the notes of truth.

Alright, I will definitely call tomorrow as they're closed now. I appreciate the help and hopefully won't be timid in the job interviewing department anymore. :D

Flawed analogy I'd say. Women keep you resident in their minds, absence makes the heart grow fonder, etc etc etc. It's okay and encouraged to let them stew a bit before calling so that it becomes a nice surprise for them.

Businesses have shit to do. Depending on how many people they've interviewed for the position, you're just one paper in a huge stack. You need to be the one to show initiative and call like the next day after your interview so there's no risk of you being forgotten. Once you've had your interview and you're out that door, if you didn't immediately make an impression on the interviewers, they've forgotten who you are five minutes later.

We're talking about following up after a meeting. You said "call them immediately" and I'm assuming you mean call the interviewer. If that's not what you're talking about then you may be a crazy man.

I'm re-reading your girl analogy and frankly it makes even less sense now than the first time I read it. Now we need Baller to salvage this blog.
