To top it off I got an email from their automated system telling me "The position in for which you applied for has been cancelled." Was it cancelled because I got the job or what?
So should I stop being so paranoid and just call them?

no, seriously; just call, you have nothing to lose, you even win time by calling. dont be afraid, you live only once! no time to worry about such things

However, do not call them repeatedly and become a true nuisance... no need to tick off co-workers before you even begin.

Calling once a week is respectful and it's a good idea. Otherwise, they WILL forget about you or push you to the bottom of their priorities list.

You see that a cute girl notices you. You play it cool and pretend to ignore her so she will want you more. In fact, she isn't even paying attention to you and never noticed you in the first place. You should have talked to her and gotten her number. In this analogy, the cute girl is the interviewer, talking to her is calling the interviewer, and the number is the job. Sorry baller.

(Note: Admittedly, this is just based on my experience, including my current workplace. In addition, a few weeks ago I accepted a new job only to have them call back less than 24 hours later stating circumstances had changed and they must rescind the offer. Small sample size still though).

Flawed analogy I'd say. Women keep you resident in their minds, absence makes the heart grow fonder, etc etc etc. It's okay and encouraged to let them stew a bit before calling so that it becomes a nice surprise for them. Businesses have shit to do. Depending on how many people they've interviewed for the position, you're just one paper in a huge stack. You need to be the one to show initiative and call like the next day after your interview so there's no risk of you being forgotten. Once you've had your interview and you're out that door, if you didn't immediately make an impression on the interviewers, they've forgotten who you are five minutes later.

Calling who? Did you read what I wrote? O_o We're talking about following up after a meeting. You said "call them immediately" and I'm assuming you mean call the interviewer. If that's not what you're talking about then you may be a crazy man. I'm re-reading your girl analogy and frankly it makes even less sense now than the first time I read it. Now we need Baller to salvage this blog.
