Hey guys I will be getting a new laptop soon a Gateway to be exact and like all PC battery they are not that good.

When we first get the laptop, we do turn it on and do some stuff on it like install programs etc. After your done, do you charge the battery overnight or do you just leave it. Let's say the battery was 1/3 used. And if the battery is 100% charged, do we still charge it overnight? Thanks. Oh and my current one an ASUS has the worst battery life (20 Minutes, 15 with fan on) and when i got that one i didn't charge it overnight and I don't know if that was the factor to my battery life.

If you want to know what laptop it is then here is the link
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway - Laptop with AMD Athlon™ II X2 Dual-Core Processor - Midnight Blue/9695339.p?skuId=9695339&id=1218150605281#tabbed-customerreviews

I'll list the specs in case...
15.6 Screen (Diagonally, 16 Ratio)
2.0 Ghz Procesor Speed
500 Gigabytes Computer Hard Drive
4.0 G of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4200 Graphics
Hard Drive Type SATA 5400 RPM
It says battery life 3:30 minutes

Just leave the AC adapter in and take out the battery if you're just going to be sitting around with it...

Technically it's best to only charge a battery when it's completely drained, but that isn't very realistic.

actually the memory effect on battery life is only for older battery types (new laptops use lithium ion) where its better to not let it completely drain out.

also overheating the battery can hurt its battery life

lithium ion batteries dont continue charging when its at 100% so its fine to keep it plugged into the adapter

Just watch out for overheating (worst thing to do is run your laptop on a soft surface like a blanket where heat can be trapped). Otherwise you can leave it plugged in without worrying.

Yes, but you still have the risk of overheating the battery if you stay plugged into the adapter with the battery inside.

Honestly I just bought a Gateway nv5905 (same specs as that but core i3-330m and intel graphics) and the battery life on this thing is HORRIBLE. I bought it a month ago and on every power saving setting on the lowest possible power options (wireless off, processor choked back to 25%, screen dimmed, etc) I get 2 hours 16 minutes. If you are going to actually do anything on battery only you're gonna be screwed for time.

I have almost the same specs as the OP (320gb HDD on mine) and I get anywhere north of 2 hours and 20 minutes (+/- ~10 minutes) on max power-saving settings. You might be able to stretch it to 3 hours and 30 mins if you didn't do anything... Depends on how much the hard drive is utilized, the cooling settings, and all that jazz.

But if you're at 1/3 battery power and you're not going to babysit, I would just leave it. Apparently 40% is the best storage power level, so that's what I'm basing this comment on (Internet research). Charging it overnight shouldn't be a problem though, since it cannot overcharge ('trickle-charge' might be a problem if the computer is in a low-power state such as standby).
The ASUS might have suffered low battery life if you didn't fully drain it every once in a while, or the battery might be at the end of its lifecycle.

This is what I do and what I have found out on google, should check it out for yourself I guess, since I am just some random guy on TL who got a laptop recently.
MBC/Liquid/TSM always.

That's a quality laptop, I sell ~10 of those a day. They are a definite bang for your buck, especially since similar priced laptops don't even contain semi-decent graphics cards.

Lol that sucks. But I'm fine with 2 hours of battery life. I'm just going to use it at home and at my dorm (if I am going to dorm) Better than my damn ASUS. The fans starts running out of no where. I'm just looking at some blogs and the fan just turns on. WTF?

Oh and can you guys tell me how battery life storage gets lower?

And maybe some advice to keep the battery in good shape. That would be awesome. Thanks!

Do yourself a favour and never buy anything from Gateway. That company is terrible with everything, from products to customer service.

Get something from HP or Toshiba, instead. yes, yes, I know some people may have experienced issues with the latter companies as well, as there are bound to be issues when you sell a lot of units like they do, but nothing is as bad as gateway. I've had a desktop die on me, the mouse they gave with that piece of shit needed the gravity of Jupiter to click with it, my cousin and brother had both their Gateway laptops die on them... s t a y a w a y.

If I remember correctly as well, Gateway has committed bankruptcy as well, or was on the verge of it (or maybe it was shitty Acer) but please do not buy anything from them.

It's been long since I first bought my laptop, but iirc I think when you first get it, you're suppose to let the battery drain all the way, then charge it fully the first time to calibrate the computer with the battery or something (don't remember, check it up). Lithion ions apparently don't have any overcharging issues (never knew that) but I would always take out my plug from the laptop once it was charged and only put it back in when it got too low.

Just google it. btw, did I mention how shitty gateway is?
