SC2 Collector's Edition worth it?

Hey everybody, yesterday I bought two copies of the Collector's Edition... one for myself, and one for a giveaway on my YouTube channel, which is going on now.

However, after making both orders I thought about the actual value of all the stuff that comes with it and I have come to the conclusion that it would be silly NOT to get the CE over the regular release.

Let's just briefly look at all the stuff that comes with it:

The game itself, already selling for $60 retail. Obviously negates the $60 cost of the standard edition, and making the bonus stuff cost $40.

The 176-page art book. Just look on Amazon for any book of artwork, and they're all between $15 and $40. Essentially these two items could cover the cost of the CE alone.

The 2GB USB Raynor's dog tags with SC and BW pre-loaded... this is arguably worth nothing to most of us since we already have USB keys and SC/BW. Maybe $5-$10 value for the key itself and/or geekiness factor.

Wings of Liberty behind the scenes DVD. Arguably worth very little to most of us, but again for geekiness factor it's worth at least $5.

Starcraft #0 comic book. Even if the writing is terrible, comic books are collectors items and have some value. Maybe I'll go sell this to my local comic book store for $15.

Collector's Edition Soundtrack. 14 tracks from the game and 'bonus' tracks, most CD's sell for $10-$20 these days, even if nobody buys them.

WoW in-game Thor pet. This is a tricky one. It may be that the Thor is tied to the CD-Key which will obviously be tied to a single Battle.net account. OR it may be possible to sell the Thor pet via other means to other players. This could put the value of the WoW pet alone up over $100. People who play WoW are nuts, man. I know a guy (wink) who sold an account for $700 that was obsolete by the next expansion.

Then there's the custom SC2 content like portraits, decals, and a unique Thor model in-game. This is purely ego value. "LOOK AT ME, I HAVE THIS STUFF AND YOU DON'T" value. This could be worth varying amounts to different people, but my conclusion is the same.

The tangible goods alone that come with the Collector's Edition are worth $100 or more on their own. The geeky stuff which may or may not be sellable itself could be worth far more. I say, if you get a chance to get the Collector's Edition, you might as well do it.

Gamestop has stopped all preorders for it as far as I know, but Wal*Mart and Toys 'R Us still have copies as of yesterday evening. Give them a try.

I think the wings of liberty behind the scenes video might be interesting, and the thor in game model is a bit ridiculous but should be cool =p

A well thought out argument as to the value of the Collector's Edition. I'd like to add a few comments on what I think though. Clearly the Collector's Edition isn't for everyone, like me for example, for a number of reasons.

1) I don't play WoW, so the Thor pet is pretty useless unless yes you can sell it, which I highly doubt.
2) While the soundtrack would be cool, I can't see myself saying, "Oh man I want to listen to some Starcraft." More than likely I'll say, "Oh man I want to listen to some METALLICA"
3) Who's actually going to see your unique in-game Thor model anyways. I mean, no one would ever watch me play Starcraft, so I guess it'd be just for my own viewing pleasure, which I'd forget about in 2 weeks.

In conclusion, I'd rather spend that $40 elsewhere or save it for something better that's coming out soon.

^I have similar feelings...

It is the same sort of idea as upsizing a meal at a restaurant. "For 30 cents more I get 8 more litres of soda!!" .... but......

Or even sure, a BMW is a nice car and worth it for the money but....

At the end of the day, that's 40 extra bucks for a box of ... stuff. That's almost my phone bill : )

Fakedit: (not sure why I went so crazy on the elipses this post)

Fakeredit: From certain perspectives though, I think your argument is simple and good!

At least its not 200 which I initially read on the TL page.

I will probably just go with the standard because I know I won't ever get around to selling, using, or reading any of the other shit.

I see where you are coming from, and I love starcraft, but I don't see the collector edition ever really redeeming itself. If it was a 4gb flash drive MAYBE. I already have some WeMade fox starcraft stuff which was useful until I outgrew the shirt that barely fit to begin with (Damn korean sizes) and lost the mousepad when I got kicked out of my house.

Also my mom wouldn't let me the Bandana on my dog. Although, I still get my girlfriend to wear the small T-shirt which is sexy, so its not all a waste.

Point being, collectors stuff is generally a waste, at least for me. I will check my employee discount on both, and if I get like 15$ off on the collector I will probably get it.

Personally though, Im not much of a collector or have interest in the items, so its $40 for 0 utility/enjoyment - so its a no-brainer. Reselling is a different issue, if youre savvy at that stuff, Im sure its very worth it.

Yeah that thor pet... 25$ for a mount everyone can just buy.. wonder how much theyd pay for a limited edition collectible pet. Milk those mmoers... ,blizzard does it all the time!

I think part of the impulse is to think "well, it's only 40 dollar more, might as well get it!" since the regular one already costs 60 bucks. For some reason it's a lot easier to convince yourself (at least I find) that 40 bucks for a lot more stuff is a lot easier to swallow if the game is already 60.

Yeah I think all that stuff is pretty cool so I got CE

That's because it depends on what you're comparing $40 to. It's all relative, so if you compare $40 to $60, to ME, that seems really high considering the game itself which is where most of the value is at is $60, and $40 is just a waste. Now if I compared this to buying a car for lets say $10,000, and then for $40, I'll get a nice bike that I may not use but what the hell why not it's a bike, then sure I'll pay $40.

It's all relative

I'm gonna buy Collectors Edition, the 2GB USB thingy with BW will be highly needed for my new school. That alone with the SC2:WoL CD would squeezy 100$ out of me.

Can't wait to buy SC2

Yeah, for some reason I managed to convince myself 100 bucks for a game and a lot of junk is a better deal than 60 bucks for a game. I'm not really sure why, since I've never bought a collector's edition before. And 50 bucks for the normal game and 80-90 bucks for the special edition always seemed like a bit of a ripoff to me.

Although I'm backtracking on that decision for different reasons.

My gf is a pixel artist so she loves the artwork involved in video games. I got a 30 dollar off coupon that I used on the CE, so 70 dollars, then sold a beta key that came with it for 40 dollars, so CE for 30 dollars is *thumbs up*

Personally I feel like if you have the 40 bucks the added value for a game you'll be playing ALOT is worth it. Even if you don't plan using some of the stuff inside, people will die for it a year from now, and you'll always be able to make someone happy by just giving it away or selling it for a bunch.
Oh and the artbooks are awesome! 176 PAGES this time, holy shit.
The exclusive 'I'm an old player' icon will be handsome after 1+ year of sc2, or any other exclusive content is pretty neat so bgh people can appreciate your e-peen in 3v3.

Still a personal choice, but you might regret it at some point.

100$ for that pet?
many wow players might be stupid but I can't imagine they're stupid enough to pay 100$ for that when they could just get it and the whole sc2 ce for the same price.
Plus those pets dont even do any damage or anything do they so I really dont see you being able to sell this for more than 5$.
I got the regular version, but I guess with the soundtrack, the comic book, the behind the scenes DVD and the artbook the 100$ are pretty good value.

I'm in Australia so the CE is setting me back $150 but I have pre-ordered it regardless, seems worth it to me.

I'm getting one CE for sure. I like the dogtag with BW although there's like a .0001% chance I'll ever use it. The extra icons and shit was the true selling point. I must be l33t at all times lol!

I think it's a straight for an extra $40. But to each their own. Hopefully u can sell the Thor pet tho, I have no use for WoW !

You remember those loot cards, don't you? With the Spectral Tiger and whatnot? Those sold for $1,000 from time to time. I'm telling you, some people out there need to have the coolest thing, or the rarest thing, no matter the cost. I am just unsure if Blizzard will make it impossible or not to transfer the mini-Thor in question.

Nerds will still be aware of how to get that pet in a different fashion rather than buying off someone from ebay, so they're rather gonna get SC2 CE themselves.

People will want the thor but they won't pay that much, reason being people will immediately flood the market with them and the price will go down to significantly less.

Naw I don't think it's worth it. I'd rather spend 60 and use the extra money towards the expansions.
