Wireless connection lag

Every 60 or so seconds, I get a massive ping spike from 1ms to 3000ms (computer to router)

I've looked up tons of people having the same problem. First led me to disabling something called the WZC. WZC doesn't exist on vista, so I got a program called Vista Anti-lag, but that didn't fix the issue either.

I've spent the past 12 hours looking up how to fix it, but my only idea now is to uninstall drivers and reinstall XP drivers.

I use a Linksys WUSB54GC. I tried to find these "XP drivers" but the only driver available for it is the one that I already have.

I really have no idea and all of my games are unplayable with 3second lag spikes every minute.

Hmmmm weird, I'm having the same troubles. I've been trying to stream stuff on my computer all day and about every 30 seconds it buffers even though I can normally stream just fine.

I'm also running Vista... I wonder if it's all some how connected.

Yeah, wireless connection is known in general to have issues with dropping packets which means it's the worst connection you can get for gaming where you need constant stream of data.

It's even worse if you need high data transfer becouse when you transfer more data over wireless it loses even more data during the session.

So, for any gamers your best choice is to just use wired connection whenever you can.

After any dropped packet on Wi-Fi, the radio will automatically infer the drop and retransmit the data, all within the span of about 1 ms. Sporadic dropped packets over wireless are less of an issue than dropped or delayed packets at some router down the line, which occur whether you are using Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Has your wireless always behaved like this? If so, I suspect that it's a problem inherent to your wireless adapter that is likely not fixable by installing a new driver. I've been wrong about this assumption before, but many cheap wireless adapters use a very simple, cost-cutting roaming algorithm that may be responsible for periodic drops in connectivity. If an adapter is doing a periodic scan of other potential frequencies to roam to, it becomes temporarily unable to send or receive packets. See if you can turn down roaming aggressiveness or something similar.

More expensive Wi-Fi adapters often implement roaming and scanning in ways that do not involve periodically suspending service for 3 seconds at a time, but they likewise cannot physically receive or send data while actively scanning.

edit: Hm, it's a longer shot, but your adapter might for some reason be going into a power save mode, which could be causing your problems. (I don't think the auto-shutdown power saving periods would last that long, however...) But you might as well try turning off any power saving features too.

no need to do some PhD about wireless connectivity. i gamed Starcraft for like 4 years on wireless and it was horrible. every fuckin game i'd game the exact same recurrent lag spikes you're having. i got to C+ iccup with it....but it was barely playable....totally fucks up your concentration. Nerdrage was my daily routine. Whats incredibly puzzling is that i googled about 5 hours each week trying to solve my lag problems but i couldnt find anything written about it. hadn't found 1 thread on teamliquid about it, and when i made threads asking for help, nobody had any useful tips. its not like i was the only fuckin gamer playing on wireless. In fact, I'd say most gamers, and most internet users are on wireless because cables are less convenient and 1 modem serves a whole house. and since Wireless lag is apparently somewhat common, Why nothing was written on it is one of my life's greatest mysteries. i tried what ppl told me...like..go in the router settings menu...and change stuff....modify DMZ, enable this, enable that, disable this and that...., i also tried to change some random settings just as experiments. it didnt change anything. so after investing an absurd amount of hours into trying to solve my lag problems, i basically gave up and accepted the fact that Nerdrage had to be part of my gaming life.

Someday, a long while after i had given up, and by the grace of God, i decided to give Wired connectivity a shot because my father was on vacation and he usually has the modem + cables close serving his computer. ...just like that ..boom.

Never heard of lag since..... ( i only lag when its obvious that others are causing it...like the Russians and Chinese)

(why i hadnt had the idea of gaming wired before was simply because for some reason i viewed wireless as more "advanced" than wired...which is bullshit.

Go Wired dude. Hijack whoever it is that's using the modem+cables in your house. Convince them that they don't need it at all for sending emails. Case closed.

Thats weird, i have wireless and i have 0 lag from it at all. Watching a stream or if I stream, the solution is probably just to buy a good wireless card if you can't hardwire.
You make it sound like there's a correlation between what should happen and what actually happens. I mean, life is chaotic and it's often unfair. I know it is for me.
