I was reading this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=126075 and I thought we could help our favourite pro players by donating money to them. I'm not talking about korean SC1 pros, but the SC2 players from all over the world.
I think we get all this e-sport entertainment for free, unlike other sports where you have to pay a ticket or your TV cable (all leagues get alot of money from TV contracts).
It's hard to focus on school or a job while being a progamer, so unless you're winning alot of tournaments you start worrying about your future ...
It just saddens me to hear how alot of SC2 top players need to have a stupid poorly paid job just to "stay alive" or w/e. We like to think of them as great players, but if we look at their life outside gaming they're not doing that great, and they definitely don't deserve this!
It's important to note that we shouldn't expect the players to post their paypal account and ask for money without being asked by someone. No one likes to beg for money ... So we should have the initiative here and ask them how can we pay for all the entertainment they provide.
I'm thinking we should have a public list with players payment options, so we can check it right after we saw a great game
Until eSports grows bigger and considering a progamer career won't sound weird, what do you guys think of this idea?

Cute idea, but let's wait until sc2 is released and gains insta-popularity. There might be more sponsorship money available for players.

Why not? If you have so much organize some sc2 competitions with nice prizes .
They first ignore you. After they laugh at you. Next they will fight you. In the end you will win.

Well, there will definitely be sponsors, so I won't have to donate my money.

"It just saddens me to hear how alot of SC2 top players need to have a stupid poorly paid job just to "stay alive" or w/e."

Well, not sure who you're talking about, but if those players worked/studied hard in school, they wouldn't have to work under those conditions. And no, they don't NEED to have a stupid poorly paid job. They could always FIND a better job if they wanted to. Not saying it's easy, but it would be a lot easier if they're determined to find something better.

It's hard to have a full time job and practice SC2 at a competitive level too.
So, unless you have one of these low paid jobs or your parents helping, I don't see what most of the players can do so they won't worry about the financial situation.

I never said it had to be a full time job. But it could be a better-paid part time job. Not all part-time job are awful. And hey! If you feel bad about asking people for money and setting up a paypal acount, you could always get a summer job. You definitely won't be able to play as much, but you'll at least make more money. You always have a choice in life, sacrifice your "gaming career" and get a decent job, or vice versa.

"So, unless you have one of these low paid jobs or your parents helping,"

And do you have a survey results to prove your point? Because either it's true or you just made that up.

"I don't see what most of the players can do so they won't worry about the financial situation."

The answer is simple, and I already mentioned it. FIND a better job. Sitting behind a computer all day will not help.

You got it all wrong. SC2 should be their priority, just like football is the priority for a football player. Got it?
Ofc they can drop SC2 or just play it for fun and find another job ...

Hopefully with the release of SC2 there will be a surge in popularity that will allow pro gamers to financially sustain themselves.

It would actually be in Blizzard's best interest to have some investments into E-Sports in North America. If they could bolster it's popularity, it could be a big revenue stream for them.

There are countries where you need tens if not hundred times more money to survive than in another country. Donate money and in poor country sc2-players will live glorious life and in rich country they will maybe get a hamburger.

As far as I can tell we are doing in the is what e-sports should be doing for pay. Win tournaments to earn your living. Who knows there might be huge tournaments after release. Isn't the craftcup like 900 euro's a month(Not much alone but good for 4 days of work) if you can win it 4 weeks in a row or something?

Quick bit of information:

Each NFL team is allowed to have 53 players on its roster (plus a five-player practice squad). As of 2005, the NFL has 32 teams, making a total of 1,696 players. According to an estimate by Plunkett Research, the average NFL player salary in the 2005-2006 season was $1.25 million.

Of course, you may not be referencing handegg, but rather, actual football, but I'm sure the statistics there would result in this post ending the same.

How much is the average salary for the top 1,700 SCBW or SC2 players?

Playing professional SCBW or SC2 isn't a realistic career choice. It is one some choose, and I completely respect that. However, they take that job knowing how little the chances of making a fair amount of money are. They don't deserve random people across the Internet donating to them more than any other person working any other job. I don't donate money to people who professional sports. They do their job and do it with the knowledge of the risks they are taking, and the other life opportunities they are forgoing. The same goes with top SCBW/SC2 players.

"There are countries where you need tens if not hundred times more money to survive"

Well, OP's argument and your argument are not valid. If those 3rd world countries need to hundred times more money to survive, such as limited amt of resources like food and water, damn, those kids better stop playing and go find a job to support their family. You, sir, are living in a dream. and I couldn't agree more with what RANDOMCL said.

To me, TRYING to become a progamer ( outside of South Korea ) is unrealistic. If you haven't seen "HyuunJung becomes a progamer", at least 1000+ kids go through Courage to try to get a semi-pro license, and only one will make it through, and even if they became a semipro, they would still be making minimum wage. So, to me, it's absolutely unrealistic.

Anyway, good luck with your donations

A hobby can't be your #1 priority. Until it's a stable job, you have to prioritize other things.
