On Wednesdays and Fridays after school I usually play starcraft as soon as I get home for a couple of hours since on those days my brother has after school clubs. The thing is I have to play starcraft in secret since I'm supposed to be studying during that time and (thankfully) my mom is completely computer illiterate (LOL) and can't tell that I'm playing even when she sees the broodwar window next to the firefox window on the taskbar.
The downside is, of course, that I have to minimize the starcraft window (windows button) whenever I hear her footsteps outside the room. The computer is facing the hallway, so I have to be careful about not letting her see the game. This affects my play adversely because I'm always on the lookout and minimizing starcraft (sometimes for as long as 3 minutes because she won't get the heck out of my room ---LOL) is terrible for my game. I often lose games where I'm doing fine because my mom walks into the room. Another thing is that sometimes my mom suspects that I'm not really studying because she hears me randomly click stuff really quickly (my stupid mouse is too loud) and hears me typing on the keyboard too much (hotkeys ) But thankfully she gives up after I insist that I am really studying and she sees the firefox browser open with me looking at (fake) schoolwork. I can't play when my brother or dad is in the house cuz I'm afraid they'll walk upstairs and catch me playing (if that happens even once they might not let me touch the computer for like 3 months LOL)
So anyway, I can't wait until school is out because that's the only time I can really play starcraft without anyone bothering me. My iccup rank is suffering right now as a result, but I'm sure I can get upto D+ when school is out...
Regarding schoolwork, yeah starcraft affects that too but hey weekends aren't just for partying and being lazy...

lol that sucks, it'll all be alright when u go to college

I'm doing that right now... except with TL instead of SC.

i think you should ask your fellow asian-aussies about solutions to that problem.

My girlfriend told me once, no more sex while surfing TL. Gotta agree

You know, that was more or less my life during high school (I'm now in college, btw, which has its own issues with studying vs sc). Except I was homeschooled, had my own comp in my own room, and was alone for pretty much the entire day.
But there's several issues with this. Some you mentioned, basically that your grades will possibly start to get worse (though not so bad in high school since most high school curriculums these days are crap and rather easy). Also, your game will be worse. You won't be able to really devote yourself to it (much as you aren't able to devote yourself to homework) and it'll be harder to improve. This is another thing you mentioned.
That brings me to the biggest point, that made my senior year of highschool hell (basically catching up). Even when you're behind on schoolwork, you'll still likely enough pause to play pretty often (a bad habit I've never lost even now, when I should be polishing up my paper). Problem is, you'll always have that fear of your mom walking in on you and getting real mad. You'll be nervous after awhile, and may even quit/minimise when you hear movement downstairs (when it might be just the dog).
Eventually, she'll find out. Trust me, she WILL, sooner or later. There will eventually come a point when you'll be far too into it to notice, and she'll just walk in. Or you'll accidentally maximise the game when she's in the room, either when you're frantically trying to close it or just bring up something else. Or, she'll become slightly more illiterate and realise what that icon is at the bottom of the screen. Of course, over time, the more she hears you typing and clicking the more suspicious she'll get, till she keeps an eye on you.
These are all situations I've gotten into plenty of times before. Leads to getting grounded, not only having a REALLY boring day (as in one without any games), and having your SC skill suffer far worse than it currently does. You'll start getting more and more nervous, and your mom will start noticing more, and you'll have to think up random excuses. She'll keep a far closer eye on you. I don't know how guilty you feel about this (I never really did much, myself, though I did think myself an idiot every time).
Finally, there will be a really bad break-down of trust between the two of you. You'll hate your mom, she won't trust you with anything. If you be "really good" for the rest of high-school, near the end she may trust you again, but it'll take work. I eventually did get my mom to trust me, and still never quite gave up doing stuff on my computer when I was supposed to be doing schoolwork (more often internet instead of actual gaming), I got rather skilled at that. Trust me though, try and just get on her good side, try to do well at school and she'll let you have some more time for gaming. One other problem I had was staying up all night gaming (leading to massive amounts of trouble), yet by the end of high-school she was letting me stay up as long as I wanted!
Trust me, from experience your way of playing is kind of nice short term, but extremely (and I mean extremely) bad long term.

I used to be like this but recently I've turned over a leaf a little, playing a few games and surfing tl after I study for like two hours, mow my neighbors lawn, and do w/e else I need to do, since assuming I don't make it as a sc2 pro which of course I will, that I have a backup plan and a couple 5s on AP exams so I can go to a nice college , preferably miami university, since I want to go into Computer Science and it has one of the nation's best programs. I tried messaging rekrul, asking for references on poker books so I could make some extra money off of what I earn from my summer job but he didn't respond (maybe once my post count passes 10k *sigh*)

If your mom is forcing you to study rather than you or your teachers teaching you to associate pleasure with doing your homework, I feel very sorry for not only your education, but especially your life after school.
In this world grades don't get you anything, execution is where you make real money (OR even an average income nowadays).

I used to be like that it's such a waste just get your work and studying done then play video games.
|
maybe do ur chores and schoolwork then play some games? If they are reasonable this should be fine.
But then again, its hard to prioritize the important stuff over games. I still fuck up in this department.

Your mom isn't computer illiterate. She thinks you're looking at porn, and doesn't want to press the issue.

This. My arabic homework is just sitting, open and unattended on my bed.

1. What grade are you in?
This can be very bad, because your grades might suffer and the fact you don't seem to be making any motivated progress (still D)
These make no sounds, but as far as gaming goes not too sure

well xellos said he used to have to play when his mother was asleep so he learned to play silently without making a lot of noise on the keyboard and mouse. It was on one of those youtube documentaries

lol this reminds me of when i'd sneak out of my room late at night to go to my basement and play starcraft early before school
oh those were the days

For me its not the fact that ill get caught playing, it's the fact that sc > hw and im the worlds biggest procrastinator. It's alot more serious in college

Back on topic, I agree with everyone who recommended you to just do your work. Your mother WILL find out about, and she most definitely suspects. I used to be just like you when I was in middle school. I would sit in the study room, reading websites (don't even remember what) whenever my parents weren't in the room, and then quickly closing the browser window every time they came in. They noticed that it took me hours to get simple shit like reading 10 pages done, but they never pressed the issue. Now I wish they did, because once I went to boarding school and started to manage my own time, I was out of control. I could barely make myself do work, and although I'm better with my study habits now, I wish I developed them more during middle school. As I'm typing this, I am continuing that habit of escaping my work. At the end of the day, everyone must be able to manage his or her time. Whether you are going to college or working a job, you can't afford to escape from your work like you're doing now. Learn to get you work done quickly, and you can fully enjoy your play time instead of nervously listening for your mom's footsteps. Your blog has reminded me to continue to work on my time management and get back to my (overdue) work. Thanks for sharing, and good luck to you.
