Hi TL my girlfriend wanted to ask " I'm considering to apply for the UCLA College Honors program and I was wondering what are the benefits and drawbacks of being in the program. Does being in the program force you to take harder and unmanagable classes? I plan to major in civil engineering if that affects anything. Thanks!

go to UCSD WHAT THE FUCK!

Your girlfriend shouldn't have to take harder classes than is necessary imo. And if your girlfriend isn't one of the cats, then stay with her...

what i've heard from ucla students is that the honor's program isn't really worth it. personally i'd ask current jrs/srs at ucla and see what they have to say about it.

you usually do some extra stuff for the honors title/credit. This totally depends on the professor, it can range from more criteria to fulfill on papers to a presentation for the class.
As for worth, if your gf really loves the subject, honors maybe worth it.

Personally I don't see the point for engineering unless you really really really love it or you want to pursue graduate studies.

At least this was true in college honors in Letters and Science, but they removed it now. Not sure about engineering but I would guess the same.

I meant there's no point in being an engineer in the honors program, not that there's no point in being an engineer.
I mean being in honors is good for some extra benefits and self fulfillment, and if you're willing to cope with the work go for it. However, if being overworked is a big issue for you, and you hate the thought of extra work, then avoid honors because engineering is tough as it is.

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure if you meant just for honors engineering in your first post.

Totally agree, engineering is just as hard, time consuming, and mind draining as it is. Plus honors??? That's like sticking 1000 needles into your body when you normally stick 100 needles as a regular engineering major. At least with Broadcasting, I only stick a needle like once a while... maybe a few a year..
(Yes, engineering is very hard and I don't recommend it for everyone or anyone.)

there is no engineering honors program at UCLA. at orientation they tell you that "engineering is already an honor in itself" lol...
