I run Ubuntu on my desktop but the urge to play starcraft was so great that I finally decided to dual boot windows 7.
Trouble from the start. Can not validate my CD-KEY because it's an upgrade and some how M$ knows that I've installed this copy on my gf's computer Arrrrghh...
So I have 30 days to find another key... great, $238 dollars and I have to deal with this shit.
Then I tried to restore grub so I can actually do stuff other than starcraft...
Guess what? Fucking M$ put a hidden partition on my 1TB drive and unallocated all 700GB of movies, pron, TVs MUSIC WTF? What the fuck.
Why the fuck would you do that without mentioning it anywhere and Why the fuck would you not put it against the same partition!
grub-install won't work now for some reason and I'm suspecting it has to do with M$ gayness.
So tips for all dual booters, Always Always install Ubuntu after you install Windows, If you must do it the other way, UNPLUG ALL OTHER HARDDRIVES JUST TO BE SAFE!!!

Your life probably just got worse. For some reason windows 7 can't play starcraft unless you are in windowed mode. I think its gets the blue screen of death if you do. One of my friends dual boots XP/7 XP is only for scbw.
gl with your shit

torrent a copy of win7 and install off of a flash drive.... and starcraft plays fine on win7 for the most part, yes the colors get messed up when you alt+tab, and some ppl have had dc issues from it, but for the most part it runs BW just fine.
|
Win7 never had a single issue with me for SC, actually, always wondered what people were talking about when they say that they can't run SC in 7.
|
You are totally correct that you want to partition and install GRUB on top of an existing Windows install. Doing it any other way is a very delicate operation.
They literally are just assholes in that they do not "recognize" the existence of preexisting technology on your machine, and assume that you want a clean 100% MS system. Any worthwhile operating system makes an effort to accommodate for peer software, and won't screw you by deleting everything without offering a common sense solution.
Just another reason why Microsoft doesn't respect your freedom to do what you want to do with your computer.

Win 7 doesn't have any issues with SC for me.
|
^Winamp + Windows 7 + Starcraft = Complete freeze. I have to use VLC/WMP for music when playing SC.

Tears of the technologically inept are so sweet.
|
SC runs fine so far... Maybe it's because I use a sc mini folder that i've kept from ages ago with everything preloaded. I do get crappy colours on battle.net though but I can live with that.
What pisses me off is that Microsoft will go to the depth to completely fuck up everything else that's not Windows. It's installer won't even recognize ext3 and just see it as free space then dump shit on it.
|
I swear to god Windows is so shit. People keep raving about how Windows 7 is so fast compare to Vista but It feels like shit compare to Ubuntu. I can't even minimize a window without feeling the laggness.

Sentence #2 makes me not feel bad for you

If you really MUST have Windows7 (personally I can't understand why you would when XP is great) you better pay for it.

Win 7 plays SC in full screen mode fine, at least the Ultimate 64bit version because that's what I use.
It's probably your hardware if you can't play it in full screen.

It's installer won't even recognize ext3 and just see it as free space then dump shit on it. You probably didn't uncheck something during the install. You gotta be careful when you're selecting partitions to install on. Regardless of partition type, the partition table will tell you that there's a partition there, so they don't just 'see it as free space' like you say. You fucked up. Stop blaming it on Microsoft.
Having upgraded from Vista to Win7 on a laptop that dual boots Ubuntu/Windows, I know there is definitely a point when you are selecting the partition to install on that you have to make sure to tell it to not touch other partitions. For most users, getting rid of those other partitions is the proper move. For users like you that are dual booting, you should know to check that sort of thing.
On top of that, you're ranting about it not wanting to install because you broke the license agreement. Uh, what?

I did pay for it. What M$ is asking me to do is paying more just for having an extra computer~~@!#$
The only thing I use Windows for is starcraft. Nothing ELSE. You can't even buy a copy of XP anymore and the get genuine version costs more than Windows 7.
The whole thing is designed to leech money from people.

We all learn the hard way about MS dual-booting gayness. Also, restoring grub wouldn't do anything because MS drops itself right into MBR. Had a lot of problems with that a couple of years ago but now I know that it's always MS install -> Linux install. Never the other way around.

Yes, that is precisely what they are asking you to do, which is completely standard for high-priced software. Otherwise there would be one copy of everything that we just give to everyone.

I did check. all drives showed on partition menu. I specifically resized one drive to install windows 7 using gparted, I CLICKED ON THAT DRIVE and the FREE SPACE on that drive. Windows proceeds then chimed about needing to install something then that is it.
NO WHERE did it tell me where it was going to install this hidden gayness to, in my case it installed on another hard drive formatted to ext3 which it see as free space for some reason.
Think, why should a piece of software touch another hard drive when
A) I did not tell it to. B) Not installing it on the default partition that I've assigned.
I might missed a step but there is no way in hell that I would miss clicking okay to install on a different drive.
I'm not even raging about the license agreement anymore. It just erks me that I have to pay again for the same thing. If you don't find this ridiculous then great.

This is kind of how licensing with all software works...

Did you figure out how to restore grub? It should be doable, there are like millions of guides on google but I'm suspecting the fact that System Reserved is on a different drive is screwing up grub.

i switched to mac, and haven't looked back since. win7 + OSX running simultaneously via vmware is just too awesome.

and this is why you backup your files lol

It's pretty widely documented that you have to install ubuntu AFTER windows if you want to dual boot. And you really should get in to the habit of backing up your files before tinkering around with your computer, especially when it comes to partition antics. Get an external hard drive or something.
I used ubuntu for a good year or 2 until the windows 7 beta started. Now that my beta has expired I've gone back to ubuntu for the time being. And either windows 7 was faster and more efficient then I realised, or ubuntu has severely gone down hill since I last used it. It feels so damn sluggish. Firefox is constantly slowing to a crawl. These are problems I never had before.
Oh well, I'll be getting a new computer soon with windows 7 ready for starcraft 2.
|
You don't have to install Ubuntu after windows, it's just easier that way.
|
hahaha >.< i did the same thing with the hd, deleted a lot of valuable stuff t.t but it's alright, you'll replace it eventually

lies. you just need to run a batch file that quits explorer when you start up and restarts it when you quit. That to fix the colors...as for the bsod thats total bs.
|
If your comp can run win 7, then it can definitely run sc through wine.
|
if your a student you can get win 7 for $40
|
I've figured it out. It wasn't because Windows 7 install it's boot loader on random free space, it's that it install on the first hard drive listed in your bios.
Despite having the drive as primary slave, it detects my samsung 1TB as the first and on top of that it some how do not recognize ext3 partitioning table so there you go.
After that, restoring grub was ez..
So the lesson learned here is that, Do not plug in any other drive except the one where you want to install on when doing any sort of install.
|
When you install windows 7 it gives you the option to format and install on a drive of your choice, just like in XP. I just formatted and installed W7 Ultimate. Except I got this key free from a friend who got them at a developers conference. Oops.
