My computer, with ever increasing frequency will shut down. It has been happening more easily recently, although the problem has been occurring for a couple weeks. I notice that it shuts down when I'm using media such as a stream or a video from vimeo. Occasionally it will shut down when I'm doing limited activity, but i'll then at least have youtube in the background.

I'm sorry guys, but I'm computer-retarded and I don't know what's going on. Tech-support thought it was IE, but I use chrome. Any ideas as to the problem?

edit: If you need more info, just ask. I gave everything that I thought was pertinent.

easiest thing to do would be to clean it out and hope it's a dust / cooling issue.

does it shut down or does the monitor like blink and say no signal/shut off? Like does the computer remain on with fans spinning and lights on and you might even be able to still hear sounds?

download hardware monitor and run it when ur machine is idle. Record/SS the temps. then do some heavy activity and do the same.

btw, when is the last time you cleaned out the dust? How old and what kind of parts do you have?
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

The fact that you mentioned it is when you are using media (processor intensive), I would guess overheating. Open your case and see if you can clean your CPU fan with a vacuum or compressed air. Good luck.

It shouldn't have much to do with the GPU, but maybe your PSU isn't putting out enough power and when your CPU wants more power, it isn't able to produce it.

Can you post your specs and tell us if you overclocked?

My bet is on dust.. I'd try cleaning it out.

I'm almost positive this is the problem.

the moniter blinks and says no signal. But the lights on my computer also goes off. So I think it is in fact the computer.

All right, where do I get hardware monitoring stuff?

My computer is like six months old or so, and I've never dusted it off. It's a stock gateway (didn't build my own I'm a shame yadyadyada.)
Pentium dual core. Nvidia graphics card. But I don't know the specs on either one.

Um...I'll try to find my computer one sec sorry.

edit: In no way is this computer overclocked it's a factory made gateway.

Anyways, my guess is you have a loose wire somewhere, make sure everything is connected properly.

do what I said with the hardware monitor program.

But regardless, get a can of dust off and some qtips and just clean all the dust out of the fans and shit. then get as much dust out of the heatsinks and other shit as you can.

If that doesn't help it. then it could be other things (but it can't really hurt to dust it out, unless ofc you static shock some parts). Take it outside to do this.

I think he's saying that 6GB of ram is overkill considering the other specs... especially the subpar GeForce 9200 graphics card, which is actually really bad if you want to do some serious gaming on the computer.

Regardless is this computer still covered under the warranty?? Its only 6 months old so it should be, and considering this might(probably is) a hardware problem, your easiest solution is to get the company to fix it for you.

A quick check of the website tells me that it still is under warranty and in fact alot of the people on newegg have been having trouble with their rigs as well.

300W???? OH MY GOD

GET A 800W power supply AT LEAST. I'm like 99% sure it's because you don't have enough power. I used to have a 500W power supply for my computer which was about half as strong as your computer. Everything seemed fine for the first year I had it because I only ever surfed the web or played Starcraft. Then, I bought fallout 3 and ramped up the graphics settings. Suddenly, my graphics card was needed for once, and my power supply literally exploded lol.

I'm pretty impressed it's just shut down instead of popping a capacitor.

To confirm this (and this should happen pretty easily), look up how much each component of your computer uses for power. In particular: processor, graphics card, motherboard, hard drive, DVD drive, RAM etc. You'll find that the numbers add up to quite a bit above 300, almost certainly causing your shutdown issues

I have the same problem, even though my pc is doing quite well recently. It would shut down w/o warning and randomly too... even when its idle (there were few times when I left it open to go eat, only to see it closed when I come back). Sometimes it happens as early as like 5 minutes after I booted my pc... so I can be sure it isnt the heat.

I also checked the hardware with this PC-doctor thing and nothing was wrong with my memory or mobo. I had this pc for around 3 years and I never had any problem with my little 300W even when playing games and stuff... so I really have no idea what's wrong.

A good 400w is way enough for this kind of comp.

I'm running an Athlon II x4 + 4870 ( >>>>>>>>>>> GeForce 9200 consumption and performance wise ) with a Corsair HX520W and imo it is already overkill.

Just get something made by Corsair / Antec / Fortron / CoolerMaster / Seasonic.

300w is plenty for a system like that, even a crappy no-name would work. Quality is more important than wattage though, you could give me a 1200w no-name PSU but if all the amps are on the 5v rail then it's going to be worse than my 400w Corsair. 800w is overkill for all but the craziest setups (Quad Core SLI / Crossfire and such).

While 300 does seem low, it's unlikely to be a power supply problem. Cheap no-name PSUs tend to explode or otherwise die rather than powering off if they get pushed near capacity. More details are needed such as your CPU temps and how exactly it's shutting down.

Get a 400W PSU but a QUALITY one. Look for the brands Boblion mentioned. 400W would be more than enough and would leave you with some headroom if you want to upgrade.

Did you guys open your cases and clean the CPU fan yet? My PC did the shutdown thing when running a Spybot scan, and getting the crap out of the CPU heat sink did the trick.

dude damagecontrol, for the 100th time, download hardware monitor and run that shit while your comp is idle, take a screenshot. Then play some games or whatever for 5 minutes and take a screenshot.

If it turns off in safe mode, you can almost rule out software/malware.

Well it is crashing wether I play something or not, it's totally random and as I said it even crashed when idle.

No card cuz my pc sucks and I don't usually play anything else.

What about the fans lol?

did you turn on cpu throttle for sc? i think that used to solve a lot of problems for people.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

Either your cpu/motherboard is shutting down as a failsafe or your power is getting interrupted. You can test if your cpu is overheating with various diagnostic tools, or by stress testing your computer. If it's software there should be a log.

The power getting interrupted isn't necessarily the power supply. It could be due to bad soldering on your motherboard, and it could have physically been shifted loose (more likely on laptops). There could be a kink in the power cord.

Start ruling out some possibilities. Run a stress test for a few hours.

Same thing was happening to my old pc the last few weeks and I'm 95% sure it was due to CPU overheating.

Im a 100% sure it isnt overheating as I said before. But Im not too sure how to check if its a software problem or what to look for inside the case since I never built a pc. This one is around 3 years old and I never had any problem until this mysterious shut down thing came along.
