So last night I was working on my computer just fine, and I saw in the bottom right hand corner of my screen that my computer needed to install some updates for Windows. I say ok, delay the updates for four hours so I can finish up my stuff, and leave it to install those updates.
Fast forward to when I came home 30 minutes ago. I try to boot up my computer when I realize that it's literally been in an endless start restart loop since apparently last night (Edit: See note below). Fuck. This can't be good. I run diagnostics, and it says I have memtest.exe missing with a stasus of 0xc000000e. Oh god. Then it tells me I have to find my Windows boot CD. Oh double God. I was so naive when I got the computer that I didn't realize the importance of back ups. I know I have them, but they're not with the rest of my back up discs.
So at this point, I'm running out of areas to check for those CDs, and I'm getting desperate. I have three options right now:
1. I'm downloading Knoppix right now, and I'll see if I can do some retrieval with it, even if it means a system restore.
2. I have a Home Vista Premium boot CD... But it's for 32 bit, while my OS is 64 bit. I fear that if I do anything from it, my computer will literally explode (read: reinstall) and will erase everything on my hard drive which CANNOT happen. Thus I am afraid to do anything with it yet.
3. Continue to search for the CDs, and pray for the best.
So I'm going to ask you TL, do I have any other options left? Do I have any BETTER options left? Am I taking the right course of action?

Edit: So apparently some people are confused as to what I mean, and my description, written in a moment of desperation, is really insufficient. Ok, so here's what's up. I CANNOT get Vista to start. This means once we go past the initial boot screen, the computer can't start up Vista and thus restarts. I can get to BIOS and the boot menu, but anything past that can't be started. The Vista logo, log in screen, and my desktop CANNOT be accessed.
Edit2: I got Knoppix to work, and I can access all of my data on my old hard drive. So now the priority lies in trying to fix Windows Vista so I don't need to screw around.

Formatting is probably the best option here, sounds like something somewhere important got corrupted (if you're lucky-- if you're unlucky your hard drive might've just gone bad). To really be safe, you should throw in some linux-y liveCD, recover what files you can/must, and then reformat and reinstall everything.

Try taking out the ram and booting up with one stick, and if that doesn't work, try the other stick.
If that doesn't work, if you have a spare HDD enclosure, you could try transferring stuff that way or check to see if all your wires are fitted properly and not loose/halfway/etc.

Why was there an endless start restart loop? That part I don't get.
Well, I always turn off my computer when I leave home though, but that's actually a prevention method

You can go for the reformat
or the system restore

if your files are very important for you, my advice would be: dont play around with your hard now.
best option would be: go out, get yourself a new 250gb hdd (40-50$) or something cheap, install the operation system on it. use your old hard as a secondary one, everything will be intact

Do you have alot of important stuff on the harddrive? There are probably ways to fix the error, but it might be easier to recover your shit and do a fresh install.

ahh this problem. does your computer restart after step 3 out of 3 when installing updates? That was my issue. i was troubled for a while but i managed to get a system restore point.

This happened to my friend's PC recently. It was constantly stuck on a BSOD loop and it couldnt boot past the windows boot screen. I used a partition/system recovery program, cleared the HDD and reformatted that way.
edit: The BSOD was the annoying IRQL error though.

If you can get your files to a safe place the rest is just wipe the drive clean and spending a few hours dling and getting all the stuff you once had back on it.
It's good to make a list of programs you most use so you don't forget anything.
Don't forget to back up your bookmarks, if you're like me you have a hundred or so with about 25 that are fairly important.
If you can't get windows to boot it's likely you have a few errors in your windows install now, unless you can use the recovery tool like a master it's likely you'll have to re format.
