Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, I'm a Cyborg but that's Ok, Thirst, and his section of Three Extremes (Three Monsters). I'm not biased, it just so happens all of the good korean movies I've seen were directed by him. This being said, I am a huge fan of his work. Joint Security Area was early Park Chan Wook, and it doesn't even compare to his newer stuff. The Host was garbage, as are most of Joon Ho Bong's movies. There was also a korean war movie that had gotten good reviews, but I can't recall the name because it was garbage too. It should be noted that all of Park Chan Wook's movies are what I would call "movie watcher's movies". They're not for someone looking to be entertained necessarily, but they all offer interesting cinematic qualities and are usually critically acclaimed by the important people in the film community. Oldboy was voted to receive the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes the year it came out by Quentin Tarantino, who was the lead judge that year (was runner up). Thirst won the Grand Jury Prize for 2009, which, if you don't know, is the highest honor a movie can receive.

Also, it's not an entirely new film. It got released in Korea a year ago (to a great reception).

This is pretty freakin biased, and I have to disagree that not all three movies in the vengeance trilogy are good, and the host wasn't garbage the host was probably better than mr vengeance just like google lists for korean movies thats usually what i do cause you can get some pretty BS answers on forums like this one

I don't want to start a "I like this movie and if you don't, you're an idiot/wrong" war. Edit: The amount of people who think Avatar was a good movie is a testament to my feelings on the general understanding of film by the masses.

First, a movie no one mentioned. Save the Green Planet (지구를지켜라!) is probably my favorite Korean movie of all time. It's really too weird to put in a genre, I'd call it an extremely strange sci-fi thriller elements of dark comedy. It absolutely tanked in Korea because most people were too weirded out by it. Basically it's about a guy who believes aliens are going to take over the earth and his paranoid exploits based on the belief. I agree that Tae Guk Ki was crap. Well, not crap, just so overrated (I DON'T KNOW WHY). It does a decent job at being an epic war action movie, but the plot is pretty bad and it's pretty much a bunch of poorly done cliches ![]() I've only seen the first two movies in the vengeance trilogy, and I think I liked Mr.Vengeance a little better, though I think both Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy were good. Both extremely gory and I guess kind of on the artsy side. The Host was crap, which is a disappointment because the director's more famous movie, Memories of Murder was so good. Watch that instead! It's a crime mystery in a rural Korean setting. My Sassy Girl is the greatest romantic comedy ever (which is surprising because it could be better), and is a must see if you have even a little bit of tolerance for that genre. If anyone tells you to watch a Korean gangster comedy, tell them to fuck off because they're all crap. Except Number 3, which was one of the earliest and the only good one =o. All of you korean kids born before 1988, forget that you ever saw My Wife is a Gangster (awful awful movie) and see Number 3.
