So ye, yet another "which one should i get" blog, sorry if there has been similar thread already, couldn't find one with a quick search!

at the moment im having 2 options, both cost around 160 € here in Finland;

MSI GeForce N260GTX-T2D896 896MB
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=136&prod_no=1489

or

XFX HD5770 PCI-E 1GB 2XDVI/HDMI
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-gb/products/graphiccards/HD 5000series/5770.aspx

i have no clue which one is better at the moment, ATI or NVIDIA cards, or you could also point me better options below 200€, thanks!

I think both perform very close to each other, but the 5770 is newer, uses very little power and produces little heat, plus it has DirectX 11 support (for what is worth right now).

hmm uses very little power is definitely a plus, im not planning to buy a new power and i only have 450 atm, i should be able to play SC2 & Diablo3 and such with both of these right?

From a strictly benchmark perspective, I'd think the 260 is slightly stronger, and like nVidia solutions, supports CUDA and physX (physics acceleration while rare and usually not all that great excluding in Batman: Arkham Asylum) .... but unless you're working at 1920x1200 or higher resolutions, both will do well. The 5770 on the other hand is DX11 compatible, uses a lot less electricity, and has more RAM.

edit: and yes, knowing Blizzard, the 5770 should be enough for SC2 and D3.

cuda and physx are pretty much worthless, there are already more directx 11 games then cuda physx games.

right, thanks for your answers guys, i think i'll go with the 5770 given that they're almost equal and the last nvidia card i had (gtx8800) blew up on me.

oh and what happens when i put the new card in my computer and if my powersupply (450) ain't sufficient, will the new card break?

most psu's have a decent surge protector, so normally it won't boot.

it should be sufficient though except if you have a very inefficient psu

If I'm correct, the 5770 should use less power than a 8800.

Just get something cheap and wait for real DX11 cards. You'll easily be able to handle SC2 on an 8800.

uh the radeon 5xxx series are real dx11 cards. they fully support dx11 in hardware. nvidia has no such solution out yet until fermi comes in q1 2010, at which time theyll take the vid card crown again.

but for right now, the radeon 5xxx series are the best cards on the market (the 5870 DESTROYS the 285)

I've always been at a loss as to why people want the newest cards out there. In my experience, the drivers for the newest cards suck, and the games don't even take advantage of the new card's power.

that being said, the newer cards, imo, aren't even as good/reliable as the slightly older versions until several months later when the software catches up.

and that's when some geeks go out and buy new cards! i just don't get it..

5770 has DX11 support. Roughly same performance.

If you have a throwaway microwave... baking your 8800 in it might fix it. Google it up.

here's a review

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3658&p=4

260 is slightly better framerate wise, but 5770 has a better feature set imo

edit: just read you have a 450W PSU. it's safer to get the 5770 simply based off of that.
