So yesterday I just purchased tickets online for both me and the gf to see the NY Philharmonic perform Rachmaninov's symphony #2 next week. I've never been to a classical concert before and I've wanted to see the NYP for a long time, but even with crappy seats it's still pretty damn expensive. For this particular piece, however, I definitely had to go for it. (One of the greatest pieces of music ever composed imo, and if you have even a faint liking for classical music you should download and listen to it asap. It's nearly an hour long though, so be prepared.)

Overall, I paid $90 for third-tier box seats that are far from the stage and don't even have a complete view of it, but at least we get to hear everything (hopefully).

Well, today when browsing nyphil.org I find out about this thing called "student rush" where if you purchase tickets 10 days before a concert you get an UNBELIEVABLE discount if you're a student and have proper ID to prove it. Friggen $12 per ticket (you can buy up to 2), and you can choose WHATEVER SEATS YOU WANT provided they're available................................

I'm so god damn pissed off at myself for noticing this just a day too late. Like WTF, it seems as if luck is NEVER on my side. I could've had totally awesome seats for only $32 ($24 + $8 in service fees), and now I've wasted $58 on fucking shit seats. Can't get a refund. All sales are final.

In conclusion, FML.

Buy the other tickets and scalp yours to an idiot friend that's willing to pay 50. S/he thinks it's a deal and you only loose 10 bucks.

Edit: saw the too late T_T

Yeah, that sucks, but you totally should've known about it. For future reference, hold off on buying NYP tickets, I've found that student tickets are offered fairly frequently. Same applies for performances at Carnegie Hall. I'm just hoping that student tickets will be offered for the performance of Schubert's Tragic Symphony later in the season, because even if they're not offered, I'll probably just buy more expensive tickets :<

I really doubt we'll be able to move. Walking around while the concert is in progress is highly discouraged, and they won't even seat you if you're so much as one minute late.

you'd think that the symphony would try and rid itself of the whole pretentious douche stereotype... guess not.

i'm sure you've considered the obvious solution scalping and have ruled it out for some reason or other... otherwise you wouldn't be posting here

The problem is that the tickets are being held for me at the box office, so if I were to sell them it would have to be to someone I know who can trust me to give the tickets to them right before the concert. I don't know anyone who'd be willing to buy them off me, but I plan to ask around. I'm not that hopeful though. None of my friends who live around here are into classical music, but maybe someone knows someone else who is.

It's $58.

You get to take your girlfriend to the NY Philharmonic. How much is that worth to you?

EDIT: What makes you think the students end up with good seats? It'll probably be full.

Try to enjoy it anyway and don't think about the price it's already too late. And maybe the concert will rock your life, and the sound is often really good far away from the stage, more balanced.
