Ok I saw Avatar today and it was awesome.
Let me break it down for you in Starcraft terms. + Show Spoiler + A Terran marine mind controls a hallucinated Navi (toss-like ninja cat people) to infiltrate their jungle-world. During his stay with the Navi (hey listen!) he learns how to pilot kakaru and gets it on with some alien tail. Unfortunately, the Terrans require more minerals and make well-microed goliath drops on the Navi main. Our marine dude changes allies in-game to defend the Navi Overmind against a cheesy battlecruiser rush - also his chick gets a new bengalaas ride after her kakuru gets pwned. His commanding officer is pissed he backstabbed in-game and seeks revenge - it takes about 100 kakarus, missiles, a bengalass, 1 chaingun, 2 arrows, and a lot of punches to kill this mofo. Another mind control (aided by the Overmind) and the marine dude gets his team switch legit. This blows for the Terrans that have to go home with no minerals.
Sigourney Weaver dies trying to become an alien.
But seriously, this movie is beautiful - the hundreds of millions of dollars poured into this film are translated into ~160 minutes of visual ecstasy.
The story isn't uncommon (think Little Big Man, Dances with Wolves, or even Disney's Pocahontas), but richly developed (did I mention it is ~160 minutes in theatrical release?). The action sequences are first-rate in animation quality. You will be overwhelmingly surprised at the level of detail worked into every scene.
The acting is fair considering the majority of the film is completely or hybrid animated. This hybrid begins as a quirky juxtaposition of humans and CG, but the seams quickly disappear as the movie progresses.
If you see one movie this year... And see it in 3D if you can - WOW.

i would of included the ultralisks overrunning goliaths too in the story. The movie may not have a good plot but it has solid graphics. Def worth watching twice...

yeah it was well worth the time and money the first half was way better than the 2nd imo...they screwed up the 'religion' of the Navi and threw in some questionable plot devices but overall, very entertaining

You can't mind control a hallucinated unit, it will just disappear.

Very well written. I lolled at the " hey listen" part.

I'm seriously not going to watch a movie that has no plot just because it's pretty.
Though "hey listen" is tempting. Does she actually say that in the movie?
|
This movie's most significant effect on me: I'm not sure I want to play Terran in StarCraft anymore.

Though "hey listen" is tempting. Does she actually say that in the movie? Would you have sex with a 10/10 if she was stupid? I would, because I'm not screwing her brain.

You're not getting anally raped on ticket prices by this 10/10 either. Waitholdon, did you compare sexual euphoria to pretty pictures with a straight face?
I read some post somewhere that some guy watched this baked out of mind and in 3D and it was incredible and after watching in 2D sober I think that guy was right.

I watched this movie in 2D first, was amazing. Watched it again in 3d a couple of hours ago but had REALLY bad seats. The theatre (Not Imax) was packed and we had to go at the front on the sides and it was really more like 2.5D.
Still a really cool movie, second time around you pay way more attention to the little things... for example I could not stop laughing at how bad ass the Colonel was this time. I loved when he simply nods his head to the marine bringing him his oxygen mask after he's done firing 50 rounds without breathing. And when his shoulder is on fire and he's all like "Fuck this fire I got blue aliens to kill."

Don't say that too loud or else the general thread will tear you apart for liking a 1D character
Speaking about the small things, I thought it was really cool that they were good about keeping Jack's hair from suddenly changing length. Also were they supposed to be on one of Jupiter's moons or something? There were a few shots with a gigantic storm eye on the planet.

You forgot the Ultralisks and lings that eventually helped them when they just got pwned 1a2a3a4a by the Terran guys.

The best part of the movie is the random soldier who kept yelling "GET SOME"
