Merry Christmas + A Story

Merry Christmas, everyone! The holiday seasons are my favorite time of the year, as may be the case for many people. There's nothing like the sense of camaraderie you share with others as Christmas and New Years approaches, where people's spirits seem to perk up even if it's for a few weeks during a very special time during winter. This Christmas, I'll be spending the day with my family, simply relaxing around the house within the presence of everyone.

In the spirit of the holiday seasons, I was specifically looking for a documentary that I saw during one of my history classes in high school. I recently found it on youtube, about a special truce during a war on the Western front in 1914 between the British and Germans. Bound by the common celebration of Christmas, both sides agreed to a truce for the duration of the event. Having built a sense of trust and friendship during that time through friendly activities, both sides were able to learn that the other side is also human and capable of suffering. The war had to continue, but I found the story very touching, at least during the parts where they shared Christmas. Here is the documentary:

I'm actually jealous and bitter about this. I find the sense of camaraderie as you put it artificial and foolish and can't enjoy it. I get annoyed that for a few days everywhere I go is littered with 'Merry Christmas'. I mean I have no problem with people celebrating it and what not, but I just get annoyed that it invades every aspect of life for a while. Why does everyone feel compelled to wish each other a Merry Christmas? Christ! (triple pun not intended)

But Zil ty for sharing, this sounds interesting.

I do it because I like it when I get a nice smile and wished a Merry Christmas. It's probably some pathetic disorder, but I suspect it's shared in a large percentage of the population, and so I wish a Merry Christmas and flash my piss-yellows.
