Well TL i have slowly been trying to introduce my gamer girlfriend to starcraft. I have been showing her plenty of pro games, and she has seen me scream at the computer when my favorite player doesn't win and all of the other shinanigans that goes along with being a starcraft fan. Well long story short she has began to show an interest in trying to learn / play the game.
After much debate and discussion on what race she would like to play (Yes i let her choose for herself) she had decided the following on the races:
Terran: They have cool pew pew units, but overall don't look very elegent.
Zerg: Other than the flappy birds (muta) they are really boing
Protoss: She really enjoyed the look of the protoss building, and enjoyed the sound probes make. also her favorite Unit the big blue fuzzy balls (archon) look sweet to her.
So long story short she has chosen to play the stalwart and honorable protoss race. Sadly i could not convince her to join the swarm, so here i was teaching a new protoss majestrate how to war.
After showing her a few basics, I decided to give her the first test!.
The replay that i am showing you is her completing her first goal. Build 3 zealots. This game is really cool because This purely her- I simply stood behind her, and didn't help at all! She remembered everything!
Next week I am going to make her build 3 zealots, and then have her build 3 photon cannons! I hope she passes her next test, she learns really fast! I hope that by the end of winter break, I can familiarize her with giant slugs (reavers). She is already very aware (From watching pro games) that the shuddle is the reavers best friend, and that they work together to help kick some ass.
I am so proud of her! Well no further to do- here is her first game!

Terran - Master of Pew Pew Units
...But yeah, it's always good to have someone that can share your interests.

9 APM! Misrah's girlfriend next Bonjwa!
seriously this is cool.
|
9 apm lol
pretty awesome though. I wish most girls wouldn't just think you are weird for this kind of stuff
|
Pics?
No seriously this is awesome. Looking forward to following more games.
|
|
That is really cool. In my experience, girls think playing / watching starcraft is a stupid waste of time.
|
Nice way to insult women and their gaming... not sure it follows TL's guidelines though..

I taught my cousin to get to be a solid 1:4 win-ratio player on battle.net many years ago, I was so proud of my achievement >_<

Don't worry I will be keeping you updated on the games! She really likes the look of the carriers as well- and she wants me to show her how to make them. However that would require gas- and i don't want to get there yet. I am just working on having her build all of the buildings that require minerals first, and then move on to gas.
It's amazing how fast she gets it tho. She understand that zerg can only build on creep, and that pylons make an energy field like creep- and protoss buildings can only build on the energy field. She also understands the concept of shield generators, and how protoss shields work. It's sweet! I can't wait till me and her can start bashing noobs on US east with 2v2s !

I am in a similar situation. As any good girlfriend should, mine expressed some interest in my hobby. We watched the recent jaedong vs. flash in the osl on my tv, was pretty fun. Was hard to focus on the two titans colliding ( although was a disappointing game ) and try to explain what was going on to someone who had no clue but wanted to learn. I also let her play after i set up a protoss base to see if she could finish off the cpu in a 1v1. I made a maxed army but she thought every unit was a peon and had them all trying to mine minerals. You probably have to right idea taking it very slowly lol. Keep us updated on her progress!

Once when I was playing, I was muttering to myself, not enough gas; and my GF said, "don't you mean insufficient vespene gas?"

How the hell is this condescending? I am just taking the game in small steps, and don't want to overwhelm or nerd her out too much. I hope you realize that i simply told her what i would like her to do, and then she had to remember building probes to 8, a pylon, 2 gateways and 3 zealots. Coming from some one who has never played this game, or RTS games in general i think that this was a nce accomplishment for the first time.
Why are you trying to compare her to iccup, or other players who have been playing this game forever. This is a true first time user her, and i am really happy with her first day.

i mean, if a person has never really played computer games or RTS games ever, its a big conceptual leap to just make units out of buildings, or recognize that you need X resources to build something

Why bash noobs on useast? 2v2 at D level on iccup is easier than 2v2 on useast and you dont have to worry about hackers in every game you play and you get lan latency so you will be able to micro.

I literally just kept laughing for the the 3 minutes it took me to read through all of this...
SOOOOOO Funny!!
It was like I was in an argument with my friend whether Stork or Jaedong was going to win the WCG finals and how we were planning on watching it at like 2 in the morning and my girlfriend overheard.
Now she knows that if I look tired its probably because I've been watching Starcraft late at night because of Korean timing <3

blue fuzzy balls, haha, epic.

show her the starcraft 2 zerg cartoons.
And if she pulled a scaramanga's roommate and beat you in a bo3, then showed you a B- account, that would be hilarious.
If all good girlfriend is interested in their guys' activities, are good boyfriends interested in all their girlfriend's activities?

Spending time doing things together and having mutual interests is usually what makes a good relationship.

It does seem like a boring method of teaching to me, just say how to get minerals, gas and supply, and how to make units & buildings with them. Then she can mess around and try making different units, playing vs the computer or whatever. I mean somehow even I figured that stuff out. And if shes interested at all she will try that out by herself if you install SC on her computer.

It sounds very condescending. I mean, you being amazed at that stuff implies that you don't think very much of your girlfriend at all. I mean, knowing that zerg can only build on creep is something that everyone with half a brain would grasp in the second that it took to tell them. The same with shields.
I'm going to be honest here, if this impresses you, it sounds like your girlfriend still has trouble with her shoelaces. I'm not great at watching people play games in front of me, but kudos for you for not raging at this. I would slap my own mother if she took this long to build anything.

nice advice
but i beg to differ...
lol... just saying there are exceptions...
like me, at first i really don't like SC cause i hate RTS games (but i'm a resident evil addict). i've been telling my bf that i will never like playing SC. to cut the long story short, he managed to teach me how to play. at first, i was really hesitant, but what the heck, i should learn to play so i could relate on his addictions. but after playing some games, reading TL, and watching pro, i became addicted to it. i even told him to create this TL account since he's been lurking in TL for some time already. now, i'm a resident evil and sc addict.
i also chose protoss because he's playing terran and i don't like the appearance of zerg units. i'm also a bisu fanboy (or girl) hence the protoss race.
to the OP: that is so cool, i hope your gf will appreciate SC, too
|
I've been trying to teach my gf too :D she has 40 apm now, and can do a build order upto around 20 food but after that starts getting lost

I have a lot of women player friends. You should play with her like 2 vs many comps, and just turtle and support her. Let her take her own decisions, support her attacks, deffend her when she need it, and let her do the work. Then you can watch some vods together.
Good luck!

It's sweet! I can't wait till me and her can start bashing noobs on US east with 2v2s !
wow... she's almost...... human?

Hahaha, good luck. She'll be a solid D player by the end of the month!

i wont lie you make it sound like your teaching a 4 year old

Well logically everyone should simply understand what creep is / does, what pylon energy is / does. how easy it is to mine minerals, that you have to build a building on top of green shit to get more, that you have to worry about food. Ohh shit and shields of course they recharge with out you doing anything, and of course the fucking health would not.
According to everyone this is simply common knowledge that anyone with any cognitive sense will understand. I mean if you have never played an RTS before, it's fucking 2+2 to figure out that you need to build miners, where to mine, get resources, build buildings on special locations, and different buildings do different things. I mean shit why the fuck would anyone break down every single aspect of an RTS and completely explain every little thing, when any normal person would understand this already.
I am sick of this, I was never condescending, and i think the world of ginger. I teach small children / teens / adults how to swim every day. Trust me things always work out better when you take it in small very achievable steps. Assuming that anyone can logically understand anything is simply garbage when it comes to teaching. so i am merely taking my many years of teaching experience and translating it to SC.
Elitist pricks are people that are fucking calling me out for taking it nice and slow with teaching some one who has never played an RTS. Considering that this was HER FIRST FUCKING GAME i thought that it was rather impressive that she memorized the BO that quickly, and didn't need to second guess at all. As i stated earlier when i first started to play this game, i always had to look in the fucking book to figure out what did what. But i guess that makes me a retard, because logically any cognitively functioning human would have figured that shit out.
God fucking damn i think that i am just about done raging. To all you butt hurt 'my girl friend hates starcraft' and 'I wish i had a girlfriend' SCREW YOU. I want SC to be a positive experience for ginger, that means- not a fucking memorize this this this this and this, now do this this this. as i said before- it's just to hang out with her. I am not trying to make the next tossgirl.
Forget about posting her progress games. Every time i post a blog it's the same shit, from the same POS that this site has suddenly found its self immersed in. This blog was going to be nothing but a fun thing.... And of course some how this ends up happening. I can't believe i just wrote all this to answer a simple question. Really 99% of this has nothing to do with your question, i am just so tired of what TL has become. It's a god damn place of complete fools that always find a way to 1 star your blog, and call you an idiot - no matter what the content.
/rant + Show Spoiler +And i feel that by posting this i am going to get a swift ban from the mods... But meh i probably deserve it. It's just so funny how TL is suddenly infested with asshats, just thousands and thousands of them. They cannot put in a good word, and always ALWAYS find something wrong with anything. Maybe it's just the internet that turns people into ass holes, and allows people like me to get trolled and so riled up with faceless/nameless idiots that sit behind a computer and type what ever. That or maybe it stems from the fact that I put a lot of my personal life / true feelings / stories on the internet, and i guess expecting people to not be an ass is to much. Or maybe i just take everything too seriously, and i should only post blogs that mean absolute shit, and keep anything remotely important off the net, and especially off of TL,

Fuck the haters take pleasure in the fact that your girlfriend either likes the game, or likes you enough to want to play the game for you! its win/win man, gratz :D
|
It's nice that you're focusing more on having fun with her while teaching her than just teaching her. Props for that, you've got it right.
From a few similar blogs that I read, they were always focused to make the gf a next Tossgirl from the get go.

Edit: Woot, this is my 386th post. Long live old computers! a 386 was my first computer. I'll never forget that turbo button... that crazy key lock... that lovely screen. I was in love.

You sound like your teaching the game to a 7 year old. Lol. Surely she can manage harder build orders then ''3 zealots''? Especially after watching a few progames. Anyways, it's always cool to have people close to you with similiar interests. Campaign Ì've noticed is most of the time a good place to start too! And she would get a deeper understanding of her race and the lore overall. (Campaigns start with controlling a few units and end with base vs base etc.)

Scrolled up and saw that long post, apparently I wasn't the only one thinking that it sounded a bit off, LOL. Though I still stand by what I wrote.

when I first started dating my girlfriend she always asked me whether or not I was "obsessed with gaming"
I told it her it wasn't obsession
It is a lifestyle
And she tries to find all my posts

Misrah that rage was so pathetic :/
Read your posts back to yourself. You literally act like your teaching a 5 year old.
"IM SO HAPPY, SHE MADE 3 ZEALOTS, OMGGGGGGGG"

She will make fine Matriarch.

It's cool that you're teaching your girl SC, but do remember that she's probably not actually interested in the game so much as she's interested in learning about this strange game that you like so much. In other words, she's after quality time with you. I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong, just always keep in mind that making this an enjoyable experience for the two of you is by having this something you do together.
Have fun~ nice advice but i beg to differ... lol... just saying there are exceptions... like me, at first i really don't like SC cause i hate RTS games (but i'm a resident evil addict). i've been telling my bf that i will never like playing SC. to cut the long story short, he managed to teach me how to play. at first, i was really hesitant, but what the heck, i should learn to play so i could relate on his addictions. but after playing some games, reading TL, and watching pro, i became addicted to it. i even told him to create this TL account since he's been lurking in TL for some time already. now, i'm a resident evil and sc addict. i also chose protoss because he's playing terran and i don't like the appearance of zerg units. i'm also a bisu fanboy (or girl) hence the protoss race. to the OP: that is so cool, i hope your gf will appreciate SC, too lolz. i just laughed at ur signature....Oov's clan, Flash's clan, Boxer's clan, SKT masco, Bisu's clas all together..

Man ignore the haters, they're all jealous of you and your gf. Presumably now she's taken her 5th gas and mass producing her favourite fuzzy balls of death and melting ugly lings into ketchup.
I just can't get over the expression "fuzzy balls" for archons oh man that was such lulz made my day (well the day before or two). Two thumbs up
P.S. Yeah perhaps it's time to introduce her to campaigns, a nice storyline would only make the gaming experience better. Well, the spending-time-together experience better...

I am sorry if I offended you in some way, but I was only stating my honest opinion. I am not a 'hater' at all. I've taught my girlfriend StarCraft too and I fully support the notion.
Nor am being an 'elitist'. I don't think my girlfriend and I are any better than you two. The thing is, your girlfriend seems to be learning at a pace slower than I did back in 1998 when I was 8 by myself. StarCraft was also my first RTS game ever. Just to think that someone would have a coach and is many years older than my 8 year old self and can't grasp such concepts is just... a little unbelievable to me and a few others. It takes a person a week to learn how to build 3 photon cannons and 3 zealots from 3 zealots? I learned that much in my first sitting with Protoss as an 8 year old and as SC as my first RTS.
And you don't need to memorize anything to play StarCraft. Everything is labeled. Everything has its costs. If a person can manage to purchase something from a store I find it hard to believe a person couldn't grasp the StarCraft system.
And yes I believe that you should take small steps. I've held many leadership positions and am currently a trainer for an organization. You do start small and take small steps. But the equivalent of me teaching someone at the same rate would be like saying Oh, I taught someone the way to the office! Maybe next week I can teach that person to go there /and/ come back!
Again, this is not supposed to 'attack' or 'hurt' anyone. I'm not a 'hater' and I certainly am not elitist. I hope that you can view this blog in an unbiased fashion. But if you want to hate me and flame me for posting in this thread, go for it. I honestly believe in what I posted, and I tried to post it in an unoffensive manner. If I am to be castigated for this, then so be it.
And for the record, I rated this blog 5 stars.

I've taught a few of my friends that are girls and some of them picked up on it pretty quick but some just don't grasp the concept and end up with one hatchery, 4 drones and 50 overlords...
