Hello everyone,

especially Koreans or fans of the Korean kitchen. As a few of you might have seen I was out to enjoy a Korean dinner with my friend and it was really good. We had vegetable kimbab and bulgogi (pork). We enjoyed it so much (even though it was expensive) that we decided to go again with a few more people. Probably like 4, 5 at best.

I know that there are no courses (food) in Korea, but I will still refer Kimbab as appetizer and bulgogi as a main course in this blog.

So, as I mentioned we want to go out with 4/5 people and have a typical korean meal, with appetizers , main course , side dishes and a dessert.
We want to spent about 100 Euro and it should look like:

Just a well filled table with lots of stuff we can enjoy. Everyone can try something etc..

So, there's basically anything in that Korean restaurant. Its tradionally Korean, so please help me setting up a good dinner for my friends and me.

If you post stuff, please post it as following:

+ Show Spoiler +

Appetizer:

Side Dish:

Main Dish:

Dessert:

Also I'd like you to post pics and maybe a small describtion of what it actually is. (Not everyone knows what a Yuk Gae Jang soup is).

What I'd imagine (must be included).

Pajeon (appetizer)

Kimbab (appetizer)

Yuk Gae Jang (Main Course)

Bulgogi (pork, beef or chicken, what should I get?)

Bibimbap (Main Course)

Maybe Bossam?? (.. Main Course ?? Side Dish ??)

Maybe Galbi?? (Main Course) (I heard its pretty.. fat, so I dont know if I'd like it)

Traditional Kimchi (Side-Dish)

Yeah... well, please recommend more site dishs etc.. (there was one with leek I think which was great.)
Well... I appriciate any help, thanks !

yuk gae jang and bot ssam don't seem like very foreigner friendly foods... have you tried them before?

get ddak dori tang (spicy chicken stew)

galbi/bulgogi is the foreigner version of overly sweet kbbq.

get the non-marinated meats like saen gyup sal (beef) and cha dohl beh gi (pork).
we have everything under control

Why aren't Yuk Gae Jang and Bot Ssam (did I mention Bot Ssam? I don't think so, also I can't find it with google) foreigner friendly foods?

Ddak dori tang,

this?

Sam Gyup sal, this?

And I also can't find cha dohl beh gi... :S!

What is a KBBQ? I know BBQ, but what does the K stand for!?)

Sounds good, its a main course right? Tofu is not too nice-__-;

Also, maybe a Korean can translate those things into hangul, so I can write them down and just give the restaurant guy a list :-)!

I don't think of kimbap as an appetizer, when I have some, I have a bunch and it's pretty much the whole meal.

I dunno, pajun is a good appetizer I suppose, but the side dishes are all provided for you and they come out way before the main meal. They also vary depending on the restaurant, but it's more or less the same, like kimchi and tofu and stuff. Better restaurants give you more variety ^^.
I think that these might be refillable too, I don't ask for more than they give but I think you are allowed to ask them to refill stuff, at least from what I've seen in New York and Korea.

Also, after I eat meat like galbi, I like to eat 물냉면 mool naeng myun which is a kind of watery noodle dish. It's pretty good, but it might be overkill.

Although they might serve desserts, it might not be that good. There might be places that specialize in dessert like 팥빙수 pat bing su, but this is more of a summer food http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patbingsu

Dude you are so awesome, haah can't even describe...
So desserts are not common?

Also.. where we ate last time, they brought 8 side dishes for 2 persons (2 main dishes) in pretty small bowls.. so thats why I would like to order a seperate side dish.

What would you get for 2 persons? (I go with my friend tomorrow..^^)

Edit: AAAALSO VERY IMPORTANT!! We don't want to act like fools .. so.. are there any rules concerning behavior?

I love gal bi and get it whenever I can, so I would recommend that, followed by mool naeng myun, the noodle dish. It can get pretty expensive though. Yes, the side dishes are pretty small, but they're only to whet your appetite, not really to fill you up and I'm pretty sure you can ask them to refill the ones you like. If you want, you could order some man doo 만두 which are dumplingshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandu_(dumpling), There's mool man du 물만두 which is steamed goon man du 군만두 which is just fried

fried man doo 군만두

pajun that you mentioned is also good

I can't speak for others, but I don't normally eat dessert after dinner.

There aren't any set rules, just be polite and don't be too loud, just like any restaurant. They'll probably be aware that you aren't Korean, assuming that you don't have yellow skin, so it's not like they're going to expect Korean etiquette.

sam gyup sal isn't beef, it's pork.

But its hellsa good.

A nice foreigner friendly food might be Soon Doo Boo; which is like soft tofu soup. The name might sound gross, but it's really good.

Also, as long as you don't act like a total dick / get wasted and rip off your shirt, you'll be fine.

EDIT: also, concerning the side dishes, you can just ask the waiters for a refill.

Why is Yuk Gae Jang not foreigner friendly? Too hot? I can eat pretty hot... in like habanero pepper hot.

Appetizer:
-(해물)파전 (seafood pajun)

-군만두 (fried potstickers)

-김밥 (imo 참치김밥 [tuna kimbap] is the best)

Side Dish:
-라볶기 (spicy, has rice cake, fish cake, ramen noodles, hardboiled egg)

-잡채 (may be included in 반찬)

-김치재육볶음 (kimchi and pork dish grilled with onions)

Main Dish:
it depends on if you want soup-type stuff or bbq
soupish stuff:
-순두부찌개 (tofu soup, many variations on this)

-설렁탕 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seolleongtang
[image loading]

-갈비탕 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galbitang
[image loading]

-된장찌개 (soybean paste base, vegetables, and tofu)

-김치찌개 (kimchi base, meat, tofu, vegetables. i wouldn't get this at restaurants though, because usually they use old/bad kimchi in this)

-물냉면 (cold noodles, very tasty. goes well with meat)

-비빔냉면 (similar to 물냉면 but substitute the nonspicy soup for spicy sauce.)

meat dishes (you know what all these look like):
-갈비
-불고기 (both beef/pork)
-삼겹살

Dessert:
most restaurants won't have desserts. you'll have to go to a nearby cafe/bakery or something
-팥빙수 (this is from a cafe near my school shaved ice, ice cream, mochi, fruit, condensed milk, sweet red beans, etc)

That stuff is so fukcing good.
It's bean noodle stuff.

Better off getting KBBQ in a restaurant that specializes in it. In NYC Ktown, its like $25 a plate, 3 plates for 4-5 people.

Better off getting KBBQ in a restaurant that specializes in it. In NYC Ktown, its like $25 a plate, 3 plates for 4-5 people.

I went to a place like that in Ktown Newyork. It is such a good deal, so totally worth it. Damn I'm so hungry now.

You know I live in Germany, would really like to see New York City... but :-)! Its just so expensive haha.

Do I need to be Korean to eat Korean stuff? And yeah, I'm insanely fat (can only say a person who doesn't know me :-) ) Why do you post here, you won't last long with such an behaviour.
