Hello TL
I come from a school that is considered pretty big. Infact, it is apparently the largest high school in Ontario, Canada. Everyone plays games here.... but not the type one might think.
Everyone plays console games...
Anyway when most people in Canada in general think gaming, they think consoles.
Now lets take the game Guitar Hero. Sure its an amazing game. The fact that you can press coloured buttons on a plastic guitar rapidly with flashing lights sounds very fun. Infact, Guitar Hero is a great party game. However is it an e-Sport?
In my opinion, not really. Well sure its competitive, because you still need atleast 200 APM on those Guitars to really score points, but does it require any analytics at all? Maybe finger placement, or proper stances or what not, but there is no strategy involved at all. Even conventional sports require pre-game thinking. For example, in football, there are plays (our build orders) that are outlined, and practiced like a build order in sc, weeks ahead of the game. This goes for soccer, hockey, you name it. But Guitar Hero? I think not.
However, most people in my area really like it, including me. Its fun. I've only played it twice, but there is a slight magic to that game, just like there was when I first killed a zergling with a marine in sc. The devs really amde sure that the game was fun, and the guitars were not gimmicky. However, I still think its not an e-sport.
But, a music teacher in my school has opened up a Guitar Hero competition, with an entrance fee of 2 bucks.
When I first heard this, I facepalmed hard. But then I realized something: this is e-sports in the making. Sure its only a slight competition, but its something the entire school population enjoys, much like how Many Koreans, Chinese, and Russians enjoy computer games. I mean Guitar Hero was chosen over starcraft in the WCG last year. That's how popular it is.
Now should we be angry? Yes, because they took out SC OVER THIS SHT. But, we really shouldnt be, because this is our "e-sportS", and maybe society will make this an e-sport, and we might have our very own "BoxeR" in Guitar Hero, who shows us strategy, if any, behind the game.
Now I am hoping, this is just a fad, and that computer games will become popular amongst the population, much like how the 360 is now.

I really don´t see the point, if you want to play music you could use Winamp or something like that and if you want to play an instrument, you play an instrument. You can also put some music playing from your player and play along, it´s just like GH but not compeletely retarded and doesn´t have flashy lights or points shown to you in tv-screen....

yes exactly, but i mean they still have fun even though real guitar is better. it's just like how some people still play starcraft because they're not good enough to play warcraft 3 which is better in every aspect and they have fun with it

I would argue that while SC is easily the best game ever, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are more fun. That's probably why they have a wider audience - and they're easier to pick up.
