I don't know. It's my holiday beer if you will. Drank it in Italy and France already, but I've never seen it in Austria. Austria doesn't import much beer because we brew a lot ourselves, and it's probably the same in Germany. I never knew 1l cans even existed until I discovered this beauty

they are sold in Shell gas stations. Had one just yesterday (btw I live in Germany, so I'm trying to answer the question)

As an avid beer fan it is really nice to live in Europe. If you travel around you will most likely find a good beer within your close vicinity.

Personally, I like the good ol' Beck's a lot and wheat beer.

@Artisreal: I know you can get the regular Faxe at Getränke Hoffmann, maybe you can order there the stronger version? Otherwise probably a liquor specialist will be able to help out.

Hell yeah, there is one just 'round the corner, gonna try this when I'm well again!

@disciple since I do not want to buy stuff directly from an oil company if it ain't necessary, I'll pass on that for now. But you never know. Maybe I'll get desperate

Also I agree on

Two years ago I had to make a big research about the beer production and consumption in Germany. Back then I came across a very interesting article in Spiegel on the subject. It was basically about some dudes making the simple experiment of tasting blindfolded different beers and trying to guess which one was their favorite (everyone had one by default). Nobody was able to guess right even when there were only 3 glasses of beer to choose from.

So the conclusion was that the beer taste is defined by number of factors and the actual taste of the beer is only one of them. Not to say that by the production of the beer, there are so many different variables that are not related to the actual technology or the specific recipe of the beer brand. So even if you like Jever its not like it tastes the exact same way every time, you like it because of completely different set of reasons. I think in southern Germany ppl drink their local brands, in the north the big TV brands are more beloved.

But still thats just my opinion. Good luck with your research. I'm personally a big beer fan and my favorite one is the Guinness. It tastes like literally nothing else on this world

Thats the reason why I dont have a favourite beer brand, it tastes so different so often, my best beer was probably a nice cold warsteiner* after a hot and sunny day on the beach, still remember the taste of that one :p

its an organic beer from germany. Really delicious but about 1€ / 500mL, thus rather something for taste, than for getting drunk.

where can I get these?

@7mk: usually in every good "Reformhaus" or "Bioladen" (heath-food shop is the english equivalent, as leo told me).

Have seen them maybe once in a Späti, but otherwise just in the shops mentioned above.

Well, Sleeman (12 different varieties, 3 are limited edition) is brewed in my hometown, and it is a popular Canadian beer brewing company. They have a lot of good beers. However, I suggest you stick away from most of the "Americanized" beers we are starting to have here. Even Molson Canadian is crap..... And they try to market it as "Canadian"..... The fuckers should be sued for false advertisement.

Another good brand of beers would be Alexander Keith's (India Pale Ale, White, Red, Dark, and Light). A third would be Rickards (White, Red, and Honey Brown). Rickards is produced by Molson, but they don't fuck this one up. Molson also has created a very nice stock ale, but it's rare to find.

Steamwhistle makes a really, really nice pilsner.

Also, there are a lot (and I mean a lot) of microbreweries in Canada. Sleeman is the biggest one in my hometown, but we have a total of 7 of them (at least, those are the ones I know about, and some of them make organic beers), and the city is only a little over 100 000 people. Even if you don't have the same taste as me, I'm sure you'll find something to suit your tastes. We are, after all, a bunch of raging alcoholics.

EDIT - I thought I should mention - Kitchener, Ontario had it's name changed years ago. It's old name was New Berlin. It got that name for a reason. Oktoberfest there is about as good as you can get without going to Germany.

And I should know - my heritage is German. I used to go to Oktoberfest every year, until University dragged me 500 km away

Berlin's Oktoberfest sucks really hard in my opinion.
Just one tent and lots of stupid folks. Just like the Biermeile (roughly: beer lane).

Yuengling is indeed the only US beer that is enjoyable, although unfortunately not quite my personal taste. It is a good beer though.

Hawk, no, the big brands in Germany are excellent. There is no objective difference in quality from big commercial brands to small local breweries.

Btw I predict total disaster on the brand guessing and I will be surprised if anyone will get a particular brand right. Guessing the price range and giving a taste score will be interesting though.

Fuck yeah! I've never had a German beer unfortunately but my favorite US Beer is by farrrrrrr Yeungling. Glad to hear it has the approval stamp from a certified German.

I kinda like Warsteiner

There is no way a pilsener is the best beer in the world it all tastes like watery catpiss.

I like Belgian beers better than the German ones I think, though some of them were nice (I can't remember the names).

I like red's. Doesn't particularly matter what brand.

Falcon also has the best beer commercials I've ever seen, though I never got to try.

We have OB also. Hmm... not much of a selection. I know that a pint of Guiness here is about $15 =/

Jever is by far the best german beer, i couldn't agree more! And 5,0 is actually drinkable if it's cold.
A couple of friends and me did this experiment a while ago and Eichbaum Ureich was the clear favorite. It's a good beer for a reasonable price. Also it's from Mannheim, which isn't very far from my hometown (Go Baden!). A friend of mine actually identified Oettinger at first sight, I quote: "Das sieht ja schon aus wie Schmieröl!" (roughly translating to:"It looks like motor oil!")
Anyway, good luck. And next time maybe invite some of us. Perhaps someone is living next door, who knows?
Prost
