My parents have told me about all sorts of programs where native English speakers can go overseas to teach ESL to koreans. It caught my interest and i started to do some research on google. The problem is that all of these places say that they have the best deal in town and if i go with a company or website without knowing anything about them then i'm screwed. I read before some of the TL community has experience with this matter. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on which company/website to go with? Are there any specific requirements to teach? Any help would be useful. Thank you.

Yeah check out the blog above - Elric's advice is all pretty awesome. The first and foremost thing you have to have is a university degree - without one it's impossible to teach here unless you do it illegally and regulations have tightened up *a lot* in the last couple of years (Since I've been here.) so you (or anyone else for that matter.) would be stupid to even consider that route.

P.S. You have to be a native speaker. No one from countries where English is secondary language can teach here. Unless they are Korean and hold the right Visa.

Hi, by any chance, do you visit Soompi? I see this thread being discussed a lot.
You might need an account to view the topic.

oh joy a degree. well thats gonna take a couple more years.

I think i brought that up to my parents and they said something about this one program that hires college students. Any info on that? Common logic says that the pay is gonna be less with shittier benefits.

Yeah, there are programs that hire college students for like, let's say a year or half a year depending on how long you want to go. The pay is smaller but you get some benefits like free housing and stuff. I know my friend did that during her third year of university. I'm not quite sure if it was teaching English, or being a Teacher's Assistant.

I could ask her if you want?

You get those benefits with any teaching job here btw. All jobs have to, by law provide either housing or a housing allowance.

You can, but it's only really a good idea if you like the thought of being deported if you're caught. I knew a German once while I lived in the hostel and he was teaching English somewhere despite being a filthy, bearded tramp who could barely string together a single coherent sentence. I hate to think what school/parents were desperate enough to pay him to teach their kids 'English.'

The whole 'only native speakers' thing does sadden me at times though. I know so many Europeans who have fluent skills and can't come over here for a protracted period because they aren't from one of the approved countries.

If you are fluent in Korean and English, there are some jobs you can find that pay more. But again, they want the University degree. As for those laws being discriminatory... you can thank all the asshole non-degreed, lying, money grubbing jerks from god knows where loser land who came to Korea to "teach" English and .. well, suck at it. I think it's good that these laws exist.

Though, one thing, if one wants to teach here but isn't from one of the English speaking countries, they should be able to take the Toefl test or something and prove that their English is good enough. =/

The TaLK program seems to be somewhat like EPIK from what I'm reading, but you still need to have completed 2 years of university.

i am guessing you are of korean heritage and have your heart set on teaching there and that is why your parents told you about esl in korea? if not and you just want to kick it in asia for a year then continue reading for a much better ESL option.

+ Show Spoiler +
I am a headhunter for english teachers in beijing. semesters start in FEB or AUG. contract is one year. i can pay you well and give you a free apartment. hit me up. despite the lack of a pro starcraft scene, beijing is loads more interesting and cosmopolitan than seoul. some friends who have lived in both places (this includes teachers as well as poker and war3 pros) seem to agree that seoul is more like living in a mall whereas beijing actually has "soul".

i guess if you can afford to buy a 200k boji car then it doesnt matter where you live but for working teachers.. beijing owns seoul. no offense. getting a job here teaching requires no certificates and contracts are negotiable. its a lot less standardized and much more free in terms of life style as well. plus, chinese are quite friendly towards foreigners and chinese girls are easier than their korean counterparts.

Living costs in China are dirt cheap compared to Korea as well, no?
But really, how legitimate is your program? I realize that the nature of most operations in China doesn't really necessitate anything non-shady, but is there a website or anything that legitimizes it more than a spoiler on TL?
I might be interested in such a thing eventually, though I'd prefer Korea or Japan for cultural and language reasons (I know Japanese and I'm on TL ffs).
