About the girlfriend thing hahaha:

When I quit, I really didn't see much of a difference in my social life. I'm definitely not retarded with girls, In fact I can get dates fairly easily, my problem is that I don't meet enough people that I actually find interesting. The large majority of my friends think that a fun night out is going to a bar or club, getting drunk, and picking up girls. Personally I have never met a girl in a bar who I actually found interesting beyond the prospect of getting my dick wet. The more time I spend in bars the more I become a jaded misogynist. I don't enjoy bars or clubs, and it seems like the 18-24 crowd is only interested in getting sloshed. It seems like I spend a lot of time staying in just because I don't find what I usually do when I go out overly fun. I know I should look for girls in places other than the bars, such as the gym, or university clubs etc., but damn, it seems like all of the single girls are drunk and in the bars.

You're just hanging with the wrong age group/social class. There's plenty of 18-24 year olds who are intelligent, dedicated, and driven to succeed in life, you just won't ever find them in bars or playing wow. Try some hobbies like volunteering at hospitals, or coaching a kids sports team, or mentoring troubled youth (if you live near a city I'm sure there are big brother type programs) or something.

Be careful, though. Just beacuse StarCraft is not an MMO does not mean you cannot get addicted to it. Infact, the general "you can only improve by massing games" mentality that exists in the SC community has already caused some to play the game too much and thus cause their other life aspects to suffer. It is the "14-year old kid that sleeps in school, plays StarCraft for 10 hours every day and never gets beyond C rank" syndrome, as Day[9] would put it.

That said, though, gaming addiction is usually the symptom of something much deeper and more problematic (since unlike chemical drugs, there is nothing but your own mentality forcing you to play games excessively). So I would recommend dealing with any issues that you might have in life before regularly playing any game, MMO or not.

hey generalizations are fun
i enjoying clubbing/barhopping etc on my free nights
before that, i had hobbies similar to the ones you listed
and before that i used to play starcraft/wow/lineage2/a billion other games

people's interests change.. do whatever is fun, that should be pretty much the only criteria for spending your time

Nicely put.

I too hate games that are not competitive, and no, fighting PvP after 3 months of farming is not competitive. I tried WoW for a month or two on a pirate server, and its ok - if you are like 15 year old high school kiddo. And you are diving into the sea of imagination, and created worlds as Tolkiens, WoW. If you are above 20 don't go for it. There are really other things in your life, waiting to be conquered by you.

While I agree with what you say, I've been in 6 raiding guilds (Key here is Raiding) and in every single one, 90% of the players were older than I was. I would say the average age in each of those guilds was probably about 23, maybe 24. You'd be surprised to hear that *most* raiding guilds see 15-20 year olds as "high school kiddies" and nothing more. That is to say, they don't want them.

Trust me mate, you don't want to compare to those 23/24 dudes. MOST (with few exceptions that know the art of balance) of them are:

a) low-lifes with no education and barely endure their WoW fees. They will end up just as guys_that_played_random_game. I know/have met many of these guys.
b) parent-leechers, who have vast family treasure and have the commodity of growing up in their 30's.

Oh i'm not saying that said people were 'good' or 'happy' people, i'm just pointing out that while many people make the sweeping generalization that WoW players are 15-20 highschoolers, when it's not necessarily the case.

I never said that 15 year kids consist the majority of WoW. I just said that he should go for it only if hes 15, cause i see it useful and worthwhile in that age. It makes your mind take the untraditional way while you are forming up as a person. IMO.

I hate to disagree, but I know a few 15 year olds that are perverted freaks because they're addicted to WoW, don't want to go anywhere in life, are obsessed with porn, and have absolutely no communication skills.

I guess we agree to disagree here

There are always exceptions. But do know that is perfectly normal to be 15 and freak, and porn addicted, and to not hang in the streets/bars. And have no communication skills for that matter. Thats what 15 years of age is all about...and dreaming that you are some really evil warlock that the world will fear and bow to... someday.

Lol.

Why "lol" about something so common? I know many people that have ended their relationships due to WoW/DotA.

You have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

Hello generalizations.

I played WoW fairly hardcore until Wrath came out. I'm talking top 10-50 World rankings here with raiding guilds. Because of the logistics of vanilla WoW/TBC most 15 year olds wouldn't be able to lead a group of 25-40 people through a complex encounter such as 4hm and come out on top. That really doesn't happen. As such the GM of a guild is generally like some 25 year old and 25 year olds don't want a bunch of 16 year olds around them... so they recruit other older people.

The VAST majority of high end guilds are full of intelligent, hard working, and independent people. They have the balance required to play a game, raise their kids, work, and live comfortably because they viewed WoW as the HOBBY it should be viewed as. Every single high end guild I was in fit this to a T. Immature brats were quickly thrown out because they don't listen and they are annoying to listen to on vent. In fact the GM of the guild I was in before I quit had a Masters in business and was pulling in nearly 6 figures a year. Every officer was like that, either going to university full time or working a full time job. Almost every single regular member was like that too.

WoW doesn't suck the life out of people, the players just suck at managing time properly. I honestly never understood where the "You have no life if you raided in early WoW" line even came from. Everything i've experienced points the opposite way.

I wouldn't say that I was addicted in the sense that you are portraying. I spent a couple nights a week raiding and would play 1 or 2 hours of pvp every day. Played more during the summer during my days off, but that is what I considered addicted. The main reason I felt I played too much is that I did both pvp and raiding before, eating up a 4-6 hour block a few nights a week seems to take up alot of time for me. Combine that with university and you have a very busy life. I really don't have problems with other games simply because when its an individual game you don't have to make commitments, you can play a couple rounds of TF2 or a couple games of SC and put it down. You cannot however raid for a couple hours and then ditch, or play arena whenever you want. Wow required making commitments to other players, and I find that is when I get carried away, when I feel that my team or my guild won't do well if I don't spend all my spare time playing with them. There were times in highschool that I played way too much for that reason.

Yes though, you are right, MMO or not you can be addicted. I just find it MUCH easier to manage time spent on games that don't require committing huge chunks of time.

Wait a second, did you just went on persuading me that the most of WoW gamers are NOT 15 year old (which i never claimed to be), or that there are very smart and neat persons @ WoW (which i added in exceptions, although i am pretty sure the overall ratio is greatly over into lowlifes), or that 15 year kid WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY A VIDEO GAME? Why am i even discussing this.

Over and out.
