I just finished playing through half life, and man. what a let down. I mean, the games were awesome, but it just feels like such a cliff hanger, and i really want more!
But the real reason for this post is that I'm in the market for a new single player FPS, and I'm not sure what to get. I'm running on a pretty old computer, so I'm thinking HL2 is about as much as my system can handle. What are some of your favorite FPS games?

HALO PC perhaps? Painkiller is also fun if you like just mowing down shittons of enemies.
Edit: also if you like kind of RPG/FPS hybrids (and be warned there isn't a ton of combat in these) you could try Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. It's made on the Source engine and you can play in first- or third-person views. It's fun but be warned if you try to play it on 64-bit operating systems (or even with >2 GB of system RAM I believe), you have to use patches to get it to run.

Honestly Halo 1 is one of my favorite fps. There's nothing more satisfying than sticking a grenade to a sleeping enemy and watching them fly 50 feet in the air.
Also the only fps I ever beat more than once, all the others are just too boring to bother.
PS: lol ^ what are the odds.

If you can live with outdated graphics then play Deus Ex (first one, i dont know about the rest), i've been playing it recently as a matter of fact - and it's awesome.
|
I heard Bioshock is worth a playthrough. I don't know if your computer will be able to handle it, as it's fairly recent.
|
|
CoD4's singleplayer was "good" I guess, CoD5 was just "lol" though.
Portal is also a good one, though there's not exactly any shooting in it.
|
|
Portal is definitely an awesome game, but I'd really like some cool zombie shooters (L4D won't work, it's too new)
I know there are some zombie MODs for HL2 (i'm downloading "zombie panic" right now, actually)
but does anyone have other recommendations?
|
Pathologic. It should be more satisfying.
Also, in the FPS/RPG hybrid realm there's Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, which is hard IMO but really sweet (maybe I was doing it wrong).
|
My favorite FPS for the computer is Bioshock. Bioshock 2 should be coming out in the first half of 2010, it got delayed just like sc2 though because it was supposed to come out 2nd half of 2009.

You realize there is another episode right?

Play the STALKER games. Granted, they're a little rough around the edge, but there's a decent amount of mods to fix practically any gripes you have with the game. It's not your typical linear shooter though, and it's difficulty curve is pretty high. You should really give it a shot, top notch graphics/atmosphere really add to the immersion.

Far Cry Your computer should be able to handle it. Very fun game play, beautiful settings, maybe not as "polished" as Half Life 2.
|
I had a lot of fun playing through HL2 ^^ wish there was some multiplayer mode but ohwell t_t fun fps hmmm Far Cry CoD4 (great singleplayer imo, multiplayer is kinda a campfest but w/e) CoD5 (multiplayer is somewhat balanced tbh) Insurgency (lol wtf? CS or HL mod, got it through stream it's not bad but it's hard to get games) TF2 Portal (not really a shooter but it was very fun to play)
|
I don't know if your computer is equipped for it, but Bioshock is a wonderful singleplayer game.

The Marathon series isn't half bad. The games are ancient so the graphics are pretty crappy, but the story is still top notch.
|
System Shock 2 (..yes Bioshock too, meh) Deus Ex (my personal favorite) Arx Fatalis (FPS Fantasy RPG, highly recomended) Vampire Bloodlines Stalker (great atmosphere. gameplay wtf broken? Have not tried mods - need to, really wanted to like this game) Hitman Series (Ok these are 3rd person) Portal (!) No One Lives Forever series
As Kennigit said, you did play through the two episodes yeah? I assume yes since I agree the cliff hanger on episode 2 was epic. I personally thought ep 2 was vastly superior to the HL2 and ep 1.

Try F.E.A.R. the original, without the bastardized Xpacks and without FEAR 2 (they're all IMO, utter crap.)
|
Bioshock is definitely worth a play through if your computer can handle it. IMO Best single player shooter since HL2.
|
I recommend STALKER, and fear + expansions and fear 2 + expansion. Great games. Also Crysis is quite fun and despite what some people think, at lowest settings it still looks phenomenal and can be played by most modern PC's.

what's an FPS thread without counter strike!?

cod4 single player is extremely good, especially on veteran
and as mentioned deus ex, one of the greatest games ever made but you probably played it already

If your computer can handle Portal. Play it.

I'll throw my vote in for Portal as well, definitely a great experience.

System Shock 2 - In a silent, dark room, with the volume up and your face unhealthily close to your CRT. (I've heard the original is OK too but it's hard to get it to even run these days.)
Thief 2 - Ditto (lol, Looking Glass fanboy I guess). Sadly, I can't recommend Thief 3.
Bioshock's shaders made me physically ill in the first ten minutes, so I don't know, it might be awesome?

Im currently working on a post about the best FPS game levels. I really recommend the game Blood, which is pretty old, but has some incredible levels/atmoshphere. The mapmakers were incredibly good, the first level is just a prelude to things to come - the train level/fun-fair levels are one of the best I have ever played.
If you are more concerned about graphics COD4 is a very nice game.
Also, as suggested, please note that there are some expansion packs for HL2 (I think the first expansion is called 'episode one' - but is something completely different than the game). You could also try some Half-life 1 mods - 'Sweet half life' comes to my mind (with really, really nice levels and two different "paths"), as well as 'They Hunger' which consists of 3 episodes set up in zombie-atmosphere. The last episode is simply fantastic - you visit a psychiatric hospital and some other interesting locations. Please note that episode one of They hunger is pretty "simple" in terms of effects, but still very nice to play with (the sequels are much better). In general it was so good that they are working on a game "They hunger" for HL2.
Portal is a very nice game too, although it isnt a typical FPS.

FEAR, Bioshock , and Fallout 3 are VERY overrated. FEAR i couldn't stand a few minutes of, the game just blows. Bioshock is entertaining but its unbelievably easy, the story is pretty obvious. Fallout 3 is basically single player WoW in the future with less level ups. The game is easy, you will eventually just find yourself doing endless side quests and items searches.
(keep in mind I play most games on hardest mode)
I'd recommend Left 4 Dead and Portal for sure. Both games are too short but really awesome. And left 4 dead is fucking hard as fuck on single player in hardest setting. (I don't think I got passed the hospital level) Part 2 is coming out in Nov. The good thing about short games though is you can speed run them and go for best times. And portal has all these crazy alternate ways to beat each level and par for each way (X amount of steps, X amount of portals, X amount of cubes, etc)
but since you said your on an old comp (would help if you listed specs) I'd recommend Duke 3D and Quake if you haven't played those. And check this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_first-person_shooters

HL series is pretty much the best single player fps ever.

If you haven't played portal you should definitely give it a try. It isn't your tradition FPS but it is a pretty awesome and unique game.
