i fuckin' love megaman. i dont think a better type of game has ever been made. (sry sc and wc3)
first, i love how you get to explore all these different places on the planet. i get to go inside this volcano, and then travel over to the desert next. its like im on vacation or something.
the format of the game is very simple. i dont have to ask myself what to do next, or where do i go, or damn i wish i had picked up that item from back there or some shit. completely linear (maybe not the zero storyline from x3, or x5, but you get the idea).
the boss names are just full of win. armored armadillo? who didnt think that guy could kick some serious ass. i also found it kind of ironic that in the original megamans the boss names all end in man, yet they are robots. genius.
the actual gameplay is magnificent. especially in the megaman x series, your control over x is just beautiful. check out some speed runs (i like this one: http://speeddemosarchive.com/MegaManX2.html). the strategies are all pretty simple, it just comes down to your micro ability. i love it when i have just a sliver of life and im dodging everything, totally in sync to the bosses movements and patterns, and i kill the fucker.
lastly, the music. each level has its own amazing music. the only game who's music can compare is donkey kong, which is an awesome game in its own right. sometimes, i just join a level, and instead of fighting, i just rock out to the music.
I still couldn't beat megaman 5. (first megaman i played) Then later on I found out you could just stack Energies from that one level. But haven't sat down to grind out the energies. My favorite boss has to be gravity man. His whole level is freakin awesome with the ups and downs. I'm not that big of a fan of the new megamans they seem to over clutter the powers.
Why yes, Megaman is indeed the best. Megaman, Zero, and Rush are likely my favorite game characters of all time. Coincidentally I have Megaman music in my head prettymuch all day everyday, because my girlfriend (the biggest megaman fan I've ever heard of) plays the shit out of the classic and X-series constantly.

Megaman 2 was the best megaman game, flat out. Also, I sincerely believe it has one of the better soundtracks of any game, ever.
