I was fortunately referred to an eye doctor by the name of Dr. Steven Shaby, who practices in Connecticut. He disapproves of the surgery and gave me a computer program to work with, 30 minutes or so a day, where I would try and align pictures with the eyes. After a few months I was then referred to do some eye exercises which involved forcing two images on a piece of paper together and back and fro, as well as other stuff. This may have just been for me, but even though I still have a lazy eye when I'm very lazy, it's now unnoticeable by pretty much anybody (except my parents occasionally) and I have no discomfort while doing so. I can focus my eyes very easily and there's no eye pain or discomfort (noticeable, anyways) and I have been playing too much DotA and am still okay for the past 4 years. Here's a website that I found of the program and doctors that use it. http://www.homevisiontherapy.com/doctors_state_index.htm

The problems with the surgery is that it is mostly cosmetic, expensive, may require multiple surgeries over a few years, and may not even work in the end. I assume it is similar to physical therapy, just with eyes. Practice, practice, practice, and it hopefully should improve. As to how to practice, hopefully your doctor can tell you that. I am without ideas.
