I think that the blog section is ruining the General section of Teamliquid. Before, if somebody has a personal or funny story, they would post it in the General section, and many people would see it and discuss it. I think that was one of the main things which made the TL general forums great. Now everybody posts their stuff in their "Blogs" which isn't really easy to see (you can't see their posts, just their blogs), plus I don't want to feel like I'm reading some persons blog. I liked it much better when I was just reading some funny random post in a general forum. I really wish TL takes this feature away and lets the General Forum flourish.

Does anyone else share the same views as me?

Me too. I have zero desire to look at blogs of any sort, including those on this site. I really don't see the point.

True. Instead of posting in general, now everybody posts in their blogs. Probably less than 10% of everybody who goes to General would then go to someone's specific blog...so, hundreds of great discussion are destroyed. O_O

most blogs suck, some are good. it would be nice to have a process to eventually ban/delete bad blogs (by ban i just mean remove blog privelege) but even still you just avoid the crap ones and check out the reputable ones

p.s. i think the good outweighs the bad so it's a non-issue

Urbandictionary Definiton of Blog

+ Show Spoiler +
Short for weblog.
A meandering, blatantly uninteresting online diary that gives the author the illusion that people are interested in their stupid, pathetic life. Consists of such riveting entries as "homework sucks" and "I slept until noon today."

or

a place where people bitch about their daily activities which nobody is interested in. topics like why they argue with boyfriend and how they end up together at last, daily aneroxic activities like drinking blended organic fruits and vegetable for breakfast, lunch and dinner, talking about cutting themselves with a razor blade and how good they felt, bitch about their shopping activities and what they got.

just another way to seek attention and sympathy from other people.

I don't like the Blogs here either, imho it does not work well with the concept of a forum & news page.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/index.php?show_part=18 <-- just use that if is too "hard" or too "much" for your mind. Just click that link and even if your are not the sharpest tool in the shed (double pun intended) convinced "blogs" are not for you - you will be able to understand that "complaining" about blog functionality is pointless and narrow minded.

Blogs are just glorified forums threads i.e. a collection of forum threads based on subforum - if you treat them as threads and have access to them as a list of new date-entry threads, which tl.net offers, it only adds to the site and takes nothing away from it. If your mind can't adapt to such a small change just treat blogs as threads and simply use the page listing them according to date entry and not author entry.

The distinction between standard forums (forum plus PM system) and modern forum (i.e a second generation forum with blog functionality - or simply put - a forum with an optional personal thread-gathering subforum that can be viewed publicly - means that the latter only adds functionality to the forum. You are not forced to used the extra functionality - it is up to you, just like you are not forced to used the PM system, the profile entries, the poll funtion etc.. More functionality generally promotes all those things a good forums strive for: more content, recruitment, experience and idea sharing i.e. community building.

People often instead of thinking just repeat cliche's ad naseum; if they simply stopped to think about the issue a few minutes they would realize how pointless are comments criticizing blog functionality as something negative or that it takes away from the general forum. It doesn't at all, in fact it promotes participation, it expands the general-forum-type content and definitively makes sorting out the value stuff from the crap even easier.

I personally like blog functionality since it helps create community, strengthening it, plus it does battle against trolls and smurfs.

All theyve done is add a little content by letting people post stuff that is possibly not worth posting I dont see whats to object to.
Bear in mind that this opinion is a reflection of the section on this site; in principle i hate the idea and the 'word' makes me cringe, but if used right its just a collection of funny posts or an easy way to group some sort of project
I suppose im accepting them easily because I enjoyed some of the ones over on LP before the feature came here and the first few to be posted here were pretty entertaining

Number of stories that would normally flow into General forum: 1000
Number of stories (from above) that are good: 3

Keeps the riff-raff off the General forums; not a bad thing. Also, blogs here are new. By next year, itll feel like just another subforum (for those who wish to use it), with a more personal feel to it.

Teamliquid's General Forum is special from other forums is because of all the funny random personal funny stories that gets posted here. Stuff like "I am making sex without condom and I doubt my dog is using condom" would not be as popular if it was posted in someone's blog. I enjoy coming to TL because of the unique funny shit that gets posted in the general forums (apart from starcraft). I don't want to say "I like coming to TL to read people's blogs".

edit: For example, i can't remember who, but somebody is having some girl problem thread where he is going to ask out a girl etc etc, but he is posting it in his blog. wtfwtfwtf these girl problem threads with updates were a key element in the TLgeneral greatness. Blogs are ruining teamliquid.

Blogs just let some people post content they might not otherwise post. It's another place to look for stuff to read if you have nothing to do, nothing too special.

However, the blog section could use a different interface instead: only being able to see the last five posts (or twenty with a little more effort) is a bit crippling. Having a list of posts ordered by date like for the forums would be nice--in essence, making it more like another General Forum in terms of browsing it, except with a different style.

I don't see how you can hate the blogs. When you don't like them, just don't read them. They have absolutely no negative effect on the forum or whatsoever and don't bullshit about the fact that it's taking space up there. There are some good blogs worth reading that wouldn't ever be created as topics. Blogs stimulates activity and is only a good thing imo.

Also a lot of good stuff can be posted in blogs that can't be posted in general. I also doubt people start putting good stuff in their blog and not making a general thread about it if it's any good. I think it's the word blog that scares people

again, its because blogs here are still new. needs some fine tuning to make it easier to navigate for the public. right now, many people probably feel like they shouldnt comment unless they have something to add, unlike general forum topics where people just post the first thing that pops into their mind. give it time; things will change for the better.

Now see, whats the deal with this? Some complain about blogs drawing away topics from the general forum, and others complain about bringing blogged topics into the forum. If you guys are gonna be pricks about it, at least have some real shit to back it up with.

If you insist.

Personally I don't like writing or reading blogs, which is why I haven't involved myself in blogging here at TL except a test post when the feature was being implemented. However, I'm not going to rag on the people who happen to like reading them or writing them...or those who get an immediate hard on when they even read the word blog. AKA physician

But more importantly, I don't think this "general forum ruining" arguement has any merit. Firstly, I see no change in the general forum quality, be that a good or bad thing, personally. Secondly, the crappy "this happened to me today", "give me advice", "why don't girls like me", anecdotal threads that used to be posted all the time read like blogs anyway. So now, they are in the blog section, making it even easier for me to ignore their lameness.

In my eyes, it's an improvement for everyone. For those that like that thing, it's put into a proper blog format which makes more sense for story telling/musings anyway. And for those that dislike it, it's now separated from the forum somewhat.

Oh, and for the record, I was under the impression that blogs were popular here seeing as they were picked up so readily when introduced. I can't believe 75% of you would go so far as to eliminate them from the site.

maybe add an option to link blog posts to forum. so you get both worlds

Please no.

Now see, whats the deal with this? Some complain about blogs drawing away topics from the general forum, and others complain about bringing blogged topics into the forum. If you guys are gonna be pricks about it, at least have some real shit to back it up with.

It was backed up by others previously in the thread, or some other thread, because who knows how many threads about the blogs there have been. There are a lot of shitty blogs that have no place being in the general forum and would just as soon get closed because of their retardedness. A lot of blog entries are pretty crappy, and we don't need to flood the general forum with these useless entires when someone decides to go on a blogging spree.

I have no problem with the blogs existing, as long as they exist in their own little world, and as ManaBlue mentioned I am glad it has cut down on the anecdotal threads in the general forum. Sure some of those threads have been hilarious, but those are few and far between.

I agree with the thread starter. I dont see how the blogs can make this site better. Only some random, controvertial and fun stuff that could have been in the GF is now posted in the blogs section.
The thing that makes this site so great is the forums and the discussions in them. Blogs take away from tha a lot.

lots of people complain that the GF sometimes has too much random, controversial "fun" stuff

when the blog links are fixed and there's a way to track discussion on them it'll be easier to discuss stories and anecdotes on the person's blog

Positives.
1. Is a dumping ground for all annoying threads complaining about people's lives that usually clutter up the General Forum.

2. Provides an outlet for people wishing to write who ordinarily wouldn't start a thread.

#2 is a big deal imo. there are a lot of people writing things that they normally wouldn't if the blog feature did not exist. if you're not sure whether to make a thread and just want to write for 15 minutes and have a place to record it, blogs are great. they don't force anyone to read them.

Negatives
- Possible "taking away" of good threads from General. I just really don't think this happens. If a blog post is good enough the creator or a reader can just make a thread in the GF about it.

there really are basically no negatives to blogs. to all those people saying they "take away discussion" from the GF, if blogs weren't there, the users wouldn't have created the threads anyway. so it's not really taking away anything, only adding another outlet for users to write.

#(trendy?) Hot_bid
I didnt counted them all, but there are probably about 60-70 blogs made. Of them maybe 80% are made by regular poster, who wouldnt be afraid to start a thread.
Besides the poll shows that majority of the users here dont like the blogs.

I'm quite indifferent about this blog thing. It's sure nice to have, but I suggest it's being implemented into the site better, meaning easier accessability and better overview over your comments or something, just like Hot_Bid said.

As it is it is somewhat a side track and not really part of the page :/

if i do something significant to me i make a post about it and i save it in my blog for others that may miss the thread (the interview i did). blogs aren't bad, tons of stuff still gets posted in general it just keeps peoples sob stories out.

It's a valid point if you don't read the blogs and only the general section.

But overall, having the blogs section has undoubtedly been a strong motivator for many people to produce some quality entries that otherwise wouldn't have happened
