For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society. Does anyone watch this show? Show is so insane, I don't understand some of it though:-/ With a sample size of 10 people, I wonder how accurate the results are going to be! Let's not call it an experiment, its for entertainment purposes. Might as well watch Jericho or Jeremiah if you want an accurate scientific experiment /sarc Anyways, I'll check it out, seems like it could satisfy a little curiosity. Maybe it'll be a fun piece of entertainment.

it seems very very interesting from what I could read in your post. ![]()

The weird part of the show (for me) is, the marauders are not allowed to physically harm the people in the experiment but the people do not realize this so they actually run around weapons trying to stop the marauders... It is all just really weird.

When you say "whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section", it's like taking an engineer, a marketer, a fireman, a cop, a wall-mart salesman etc. ?

Maybe I'm too realist, but they are supposed to be simulating a post-apocalypse something-or-other in a warehouse / lot thing.... its hard to describe. They start off deciding "we need to purify our water" and this guy comes up and is like "check out this inductive electrical coil thingy I found, we can use this for that and this. They have simulated bandits and stuff, like they will use actors to try and steal the food theyve gathered or try to kidnap one of the survivors. It's okay from an entertainment perspective, but it's kinda fake-reality TV and you can see it. Endless and no limit to materials to keep them "alive" One thing I was thinking about though, they are in this "apocalyptic Scenario" for TEN WEEKS. They brought on a psychologist and he was saying after 2 weeks of solitude in a new environment, your mind will start to lose touch with reality and accept the new "scenario" as reality...these people could potentially be F'ed up after their 10 weeks...what happens when they are released back into the real world O_O but....in the third episode the guy builds a flamethrower out of scratch to keep the bandits away...THAT is a badass skill to have. Worth a watch, but don't expect what the TV previews show and think it'll be a hardcore survival-esque thing like I did.

There is a few engineers among other things. On August 05 2009 12:15 Torenhire wrote: I don't mean to barrel in here and say it's not so great. I don't really think it is a fully scripted show, I think these 10 people are actually there and trying to survive in that type of enviroment but I just don't see how these people could be that serious... I don't know just all a bit odd, but I really enjoy the show They kept the people in the experiment up 30 hours before putting them into the environment, I wonder how much impact that really had. I know after 30 hours I am a bit loopy and probably would believe it but after I wouldn't really be able to take it seriously

Not only that, rebuilding society more than anything relies on philosophy and politics. Is there a Libertarian, National Socialist, Marxist, Socialist, etc. Seriously, 10 people is about 1% of the sample size needed for any such experimentation. In fact, you really can't do any scientific experiment, because god forbid any scenario that would precipitate the need to rebuild society we have no idea how people will react. There is no way other than the real thing happening. We can only hope that humanity wouldn't devour itself, in which I give us a 50/50 shot. There certainly will be nothing resembling the US for a very long time. I see alot of centralized powerful leaders that would rise up, much like most of human history. Think of it has restarting from the beginning. A sad notion indeed.

What if they go seven samurai+3 on them for trying to steal their ricecakes. Also They'd all need to fuck each other 3 times a day to ensure the colony is established and not wiped out.

If we ever intend to colonize other planets and moons, we'll need indepth studies and analysis. That to me is vastly more interesting than this. That's what I hoped the show to be when I saw the thread.

What if these simulated bandits get severly injured or killed? O_O
