I still remember last years Gamescom 2010 meet up at the Mexican restaurant which was absolutely amazing and a lot of fun for the community as well as for the gamers and organizers/Blizzard members who were attending.
Now its not long until Gamescom 2011 and there's still a thread missing. As I have no information on who is going to come and if there's any interest in doing a meetup again, lets first gather information. Date for gamescom (public opening) is 18th of August - 21th.
When: Friday 19th August 2011 (time is not yet fixed!) Where: Café Especial (http://www.cafe-especial.com/) (location we have in mind, 90% fix) Notes: BRING YOUR OWN CASH - AND BRING ENOUGH OF IT. Payment: You pay what you order immediately after you got it, to not have missing money later on. Reservation: Its for 100 persons, so if we are more.. we will have to split up a bit, I don't know how it would work, but we will find a solution.
Plan: We will meet on the big stairs of the south entrance at 08:00PM / 08:15PM and walk over to the restaurant. Please be on time since the reservation is for 08:30PM - 09:00PM. Meet me there or come to the restaurant yourself at that time.
Bring money as you will have to pay everything immediately after you ordered it. Enjoy the night. Reservation is booked for 100 and I don't have a "check-list" so whoever comes first.. gets a seat. I don't think there will be 100 people sitting and eating all the time as a lot will be standing outside with drinks and smoke like last year. See you there.
Address of the restaurant:
Neuhöfferstraße 32 50679 Köln
EDIT - 1
BeWat3r and I talked quiet a bit and we were thinking about doing it at the same place where we did it last year. At the mexican restaurant Café Especial (http://www.cafe-especial.com/) which is not more than 10 minutes walking distance from the venue. Also we think it would be the best to do it on friday, since the ESL players party is saturday.
Also its probably the best to do it in the beginning of the evening since as for now the restaurant closes at 1AM. So I'm thinking 7:30PM meetup and head over to the restaurant at 8 or 8:30PM and then have a good time. The food is good and the drinks are as well - happy hour there is from 10:30PM to 11:30PM and I think cocktails etc are nearly half the price then.
Will keep you updated.
EDIT - 2
THE MEETUP WILL BE ON FRIDAY 19th of August 2011 SINCE THE ESL - PLAYERSPARTY WILL BE ON SATURDAY
AutobahnFTW 90 mins from where I live! A3 is usually packed with traffic tho.
I have to work on Friday, so I'd strongly prefer Saturday! Would be my first time meeting some TL guys, so I hope I can make it happen. (put "maybe", just to be sure). I'll bring my Bw game from 2003 for some autographs lol.
The meeting is most likely in the evening after the games.. like 8, 9 or even 10PM until deep in the night. I don't think you guys need to work at those times, do you ;-)!?
Depends, could be I have to work till 18:00 and then I have to get to gamescom and you know how traffic is at that time on A3... It would be way better for me on Saturday so I could drive early in the morning and get to see a little gamescom , not only drive 3-4 hours ( to and backwards) "just" for the meeting (If there's no other option, I'd do it tho.)
I ll come to the Gamescom and the Meet Up! Don t care about saturday or friday... Well... Btw... Why Friday OR Saturday? Any reason to not meet on both days? Was pretty cool last year And the food was great.

Because its quiet a bit of work to organize ;-)!
Do it! For the community! Maybe it s much, but in my opinion it s really worth it, because last year was great. I d still be happy with only one meeting Also it would mean two times "More Tekila" from WhiteRa!
nobody here will know me, but I followed this community for about seven years know and I´ve been a competitive gamer since Quake1. I never participated in any tournament or was very active within the community. But I´m very passionate about e-sports and willing to give something back to the community that brought so much joy to my life in the past ... well almost my whole life since I own a PC.
My dream is to someday open up a place for the community to meet and watch sc2 tournaments or other e-sports events. Something like the Manabar, if that means something to you, but more focused on e-sports and support for the community. What I have in mind is a combination of a bar with puplic viewing experience and a shop for gamer hardware and gear. Eventually there could be somekind of face to face support, like instructions on interface setup and maybe even live coaching. Since Gamescom wil be here in Cologne every year now, this would also be a great place to have the TL-Meetups. I´m currently in the phase of creating a business model and looking for investors and ways to fund all this. As some of you might know, figures about customer potentials are a very important part of this. So I´d like to take this opportunity to do a little survey.
If this place would exist, how many of you would go there on a regular basis (this is mainly directed to people in the area) and would the people attending the TL-Meetup prefer this over a local bar or restaurant?
As for the upcoming TL-Meetup: You guys probably have it all figured out, but if you need any help finding nice places to go to in cologne or have any kind of questions about how to get where, I´m happy to help.
If anything above doesnt make sense, because english is my second language and I´m an idiot, feel free to ask.

So please give me some feedback on this. cheers
Nothing is figured out yet and I definately need help or some people should organize this since I'm really busy with my work, but for the other part. Please open an own thread for this. If we would dicuss this in this thread as well, it will only get a huge mess.

Sorry to crash your thread. I will open a new thread for my idea.
As mentioned I´m willing to look for possible locations and make reservations for you. I´ll get back to you on that and see if I can provide you with some options over the next few days.
I'll attend gamescom at least one day, and I wouldn't mind coming to a TL-Meetup. Both Friday and Saturday are ok for me, but there are more important persons than some random German E-Sports fanboy anyway :D

Count me in. Not sure if I can join from the very beginning as I will attend as press and there is no information about the IEM and WCG schedule yet. But I doubt that everything will be over around 19:30 (yes I got a lot of experience on offline tournaments and their schedule management ).
WOW, that´s great! Definitly will be coming, most likely with at least 2 friends. Last years Gamescom was already great, but i missed the meet up....with this it´s gonna be freakin´awesome! Thanks very much for setting up something like this.
Looking forward to gamescom. I'm pretty sure Dota 2 will be there as well as Firefall. I'm in the wrong country to personally attend unfortunately, but hopefully everyone going has a fun time and we get some good gaming news!

I think you need to update the OP a little bit more, still so many people posted about Saturda, while its clear that it will be on Friday because of the ESL PP (same reason like last year :x )

very very likely
yay, please do!
so excited, last year was amazing
oh and everyone make sure you get and pay what you ordered. Last time there were a few who didnt pay, partly because they didnt know their food was done, it was a bit chaotic and Nazgul had to pay for everyone who didnt.

I will be calling the restaurant either today or tomorrow about reservation. I will add ~15-20 to the number I have now since players will attend as well I guess. So.. yeah, hopefully it goes well. I will try to book it as "Teamliquid" but if it doesn't work out, I will use my family name^_^!
I just talked with the restaurant and tried to book for ~80 people. Its not possible. At best they take reservation for 30... so I guess we have to look for another place. Could a German help me out on that ;-)?

Sadly I'm not from Cologne, so I don't know any restaurants or bars over there. I'll ask a few people if they know a place big enough for ~80 people.

I just googled for some locations around Köln-Deutz (bascially where gamescom is held too) and found a restaurant at the train station called "Deutzer Bahnhof" with a pub called "Deutzer Zwei" for 40-100. Seems like a reasonable size for us + you can book the whole place for private festivities for free.
I'm still in contact with the restaurant. I wrote them a really friendly yet upset eMail telling them I will watch out for alternatives but find it very sad that its not possible for them to allow such a registration. They replied very friendly that they will reconsider it, but we have to dine there.
I don't think it should be a problem to go there for dinner since the prices are reasonable and you spend more on drinks anyways. They have fingerfood as well as real meals. So yeah. I will keep you posted.
I'm in - possibly +1. Maybe a little later because I have to work.
Also, I liked altlenny's suggestion of Deutzer Bahnhof - it's a fairly big place with a beer garden. The food is quite nice, and they actually don't close at a certain time, so as long as there are enough people, it's open end.
On July 20 2011 03:57 FlyingDJ wrote: Why not go to Vapiano? Should fit 80 easily...
Last year the mexican place was really good. It was a bit slow with the food but the price was reasonable and the drinks were good. Cocktails & whatever you wanted. I'd say Vapiano is not really made for running around, switching places, chatting and talking loud... the mexican place is a lot more suited for that.
Everyone liked it, but I'm looking for alternatives..

The Deutzer Bahnhof thing looks more like a suitable venue for something like that than the Vapiano. Judging from the picture there might be a little few seats though. :/
don't worry Tppz!, you're not alone in that regard. :p But if it's gonna be easy to get along with anyone, it'll be the nice folks from Teamliquid.net.
I'll update the list later... I'm waiting for the restaurants reply. Alternatives already in mind. I also didn't add all the players yet, but I'm pretty sure IdrA & co will come with us.
On July 24 2011 11:07 Neroin wrote: I'm thinking of coming, though I'm not sure yet. So possibly put me up as a maybe? Btw thanks to everyone involved organizing this!
Also: What do you do at Gamescom if you're alone and aren't that much of a convention guy?
Be sure to go and watch IEM if you don't want to stand around for 5 hours just to play 20 minutes of Diablo 3 :D (they won't play only Starcraft 2 on the mainstage, but also Counter Strike 1.6 and Source if I remember correctly League of Legends; and the atmosphere in the IEM hall usually is really cool; and you get so see sick games life on quite the large stage). Besides that it is definitely worth just walking through every hall once.
Does anyone know a cheap Hotel/Hostel around cologne for the night from friday to saturday? Would love to meet you guys, but i need a place to sleep, or at least to put my stuff, dont know how long the night will be ;D
Holiday plans with my girl are still not set, so me beeing there depends entirely on me beeing in Germany at that time Should I have time, I´ll attend Gamescon and probably come to the MeetUp as well, but it is worlds away from beeing sure.
Great initiative either way :D
If I make it or not : I hope you guys have a blast !
I'll update the list. I won't forget, but I'm busy atm :-)!

Also you have drooL listed twice.
100 is actually quit a number. You could assume that some of the maybes don't come for example. If its more than 100.... not my fault ;-)! A reservation for more people is not possible and that one was actually quiet hard to get.
I'll update the thread next week. 2 weeks before the event with more information. Basically we are doing it like we did it last year which would be the following:
Meet up at the big stairs of the south entrance at 8:00PM and walk over to the restaurant. Meet me/us there or come to the restaurant yourself at 8:30PM.
:-) Should I book reservation for 100 persons no matter what?..

btw does some1 wanna share a apartment in cologne. i found a good place it will be 60€ each night for 3-4 days 17-20/21 (depends) it got 2 bathrooms , 2tv, w-lan, kitchen, balcony even a grill etc. and its in the center of cologne
sry 4 hijack - just wanted to confirm my "maybe"
#edit, its also possbile for a total of 3 people costing around 45-50€ each
Okay guys. I updated the list and I'm close to 100 with people definitely coming and far over 100 with the maybe. And I'm not evening counting the players yet... Hopefully this works out and some people don't come haha ;-)!
The restaurant called me today and I confirmed 100 persons... also they asked about payment and we agreed that everyone will pay immediately after getting what he/she ordered. This means that if you order something you will have to pay it the moment you get it .. which is not amazing service but the best thing we can do, because we won't have (or I) won't have to pay for someone who already left.
They also asked if we want to have some kind of menu but I refused, since I don't want to pay 500-1000 beforehand and not have people pay me that.. so we will order food from the menu and not have a buffet.

That's pretty normal and understandable with such "special events" afaik, we had to do the same at the limerick's (HSC3) because otherwise they just couldn't keep track of all the orders and people would just leave without paying... it's totally doable as a guest and shouldn't be much of a problem imho
i still hope i can make it, but i start a new job on monday and i don't know how i have to work on fridays yet, still praying it works out >_<

Yeah having to pay immediately is definitely the best solution, otherwise there would 100% be money left to pay, even if noone was ill-intentioned. thx for organizing all of this
I've gone back and read all the comments in the thread, and it looks like we could have a serious problem if everyone who wants to come actually shows up.
Naruto, do you know what the restaraunt's capacity is, and would it be possible for us to try to reserve more space?
Also, does anyone know the neighborhood and know a good place where some of us could spill over if the main place is over capacity? I'd hate for 200 people to show up and 100 to just not be able to take part. I unfortunately don't know Cologne very well, or I'd suggest something, but there's got to be a native Kölscher or two in here.

Here to the rescue! Since we're talking about cologne, there's LOTS of opportunities to go out and drink, IF(!) the place was to small. But I guess between writing in forums "I will attend" and actually attending is quite a difference. Let's see how many people actually show up, I most certainly am.
And as I said: "If" an alternative Location will be needed, the Convention center is just 1 trainstop away from "downtown" Cologne with LOTS of opportunities

Maybe slightly offtopic, but does anyone have a idea how to get a press ticket/trade visitor ticket, so I can go to Gamescom on Wednesday? Can't wait for this meetup, seems like it will be as awesome as last year's

You can buy it just as you can buy normal tickets, but you have to proof that you are some sort of press-related person.
I'm going to Gamescom with one of my buddies. If its possible with so many already signed up, we would really like to join the rest of the lovely people from TL for dinner and a bit of drinking. If its not possible to fit more people into the reservation i guess we can find dinner somewhere else and join you for the drinking part:D

Great idea, gj.
Sounds great Naruto! This seams to be the best way to avoid any troubles. I am looking forward to friday!
The place usually is completely full without a big reservation on friday evening. He also made very clear that he doesn't 'need' a reservation. He was a bit worried that his usual evening guests would bring him more money, but I told him that this is completely untrue as we are 100 people who might stay until they close and we eat & drink more than the usual guests.
I can't have a reservation for more than 100 which was already hard to get, but if there are more seats obviously people can take them.
I might join as well but not 100% sure yet and if it's possible then probably only for 1 or 2 hours because my way home is rather long. Sorry for the late notice too.
See y'all tomorrow! I'm pretty pumped about this. Especially with all the native English speakers that appear to be coming. We need some way to recognize each other except for yelling at everyone in English . Usually I can just tell people I'm the long-haired guy with the nerdy t-shirt, but I have a feeling I won't be standing out in that way at this particular event...
Unfortunately I wont make it In the end my girl convinced me that 2 weeks of sun and without a comp would be a really good idea, and if everything goes right, we will start our journey on Saturday.. so with preparation and everything, its not gonna happen for me this time... (But hey, I get 2 weeks of sun in a country full of people I don´t understand at all... France).
I wish everybody attending a wonderful and great evening, have fun guys !
That actually sounds pretty negative on second thought :D .. I´m of course also really looking forward to my vacation, the atlantic coast in France is a wonderful place to be But hey, I want my cake, eat it, get paid for it and own the rights for the movie... AND go to IEM
Really looking forward to this. Especially now, after WhiteRa announced, that he s planning to join us tomorrow. Hope he will make it. Cu all tomorrow.
sitting on the floor watching a game (i think it was MC vs Select) a nice girl invited me to come as well, but sadly my friends didnt want to. we started our journey at about 9AM, so we were pretty tired.
im so sorry for not making it, if i was there with some person which is easy to influence (for example brother or girlfriend) i would have made it for sure, but theres always a next time i guess
just returned... nice evening. and a lot more TLers than expected. we didn't just occupy the whole interior of the bar, but half the seats outside aswell.
also funny to see huk struggle with the camera, when he was asked to take a picture of us.
I will post some pictures when I'm back home! Great evening all together, spoke to some amazing people. Many people have videos/pictures so I hope everyone is willing to post them as well.
It was a freaking nice evening. Lots of players, lots of fans and a lot of fun :-) Im still on my ride home, and have to wait for another 30 min but it was worth it. I think ther will be so many pictures and im really looking forward to that :-) See you tomorrow at IEM :-) mfg BeWat3r
What a phenomenal evening, guys! This is seriously the best community around. Thanks to Naruto for organizing the event and to everyone who showed up for being fuckin baller :-D
This was amazing. Next year I'll be there and I'll be prepared!!! Now after one day of reflecting what happend I decided that I need to spend way more time with TL and this whole ESPORTS thing. Everybody was so nice and open minded and I hate myself for not staying longer.
hey there it was really great. at around 2 am when everybody was leaving we were heading with whita ra and dimaga to another place. i got to bed at around 4:30 and the we started to watch gsl lol.
i gotta go the esl party now, but i was the guy taking the pictures from every one inside
i will be uploading all of the on mondy tuesday when im back in berlin , gotta go
Was great indeed, too bad we arrived when everybody was sitting and eating, but later on it was really nice talking with people and taking photos. We got home at 3.30am and had to get up at 7am for gamescon again. :D (The train to cologne was full though, so we arrived 2 hours later -.-) Will upload the photos soon and post here.
I'm very sad I had to leave early, but I heard a lot of good things about the meetup. Thanks so much for coming ... Teamliquid is truly an openminded community. We had people from all over the world and everyone seemed to have fun.
I talked to the restaurant chef the next day and he told me that we can come again next year if we want to for the amount of people we like - even the whole place - . But he suggested to order a buffet next time, because it will reduce the waiting time for food/drinks :-)

Thats great! They were really friendly too, although I didn't like the mexican food, but maybe I just ordered something wrong. ^^ Hope there will be one next year.
