Details of problem:
My iPhone is at a weird state of non-functionality. My iPhone suddenly froze, I googled the problem and I did a soft reset, though my finger slipped after the screen had gone black and before the Apple logo had appeared, which I fear may be the problem. The screen is completely black, and does not show anything. Switching the phone on and off of vibrate doesn't do anything, so I assume that the display is not at fault here otherwise the phone would vibrate when the switch was toggled. I just have no damn idea, every result of "black screen" or "won't turn on" involves something appearing on the screen after the directions are followed, and the screen never gives me that.
Solutions and measures conducted:
Soft reset, via holding the power and home button. Attempt at software recovery via iTunes, which resulted in an error 1601 saying that iTunes could not restore the iPhone. Failed hard and soft resets, result in absolutely nothing, initiating recovery in iTunes is the only way the phone is recognized by iTunes, and it just leads to a restoration failure.
Recent changes to hardware/software
Replaced flex cable under the home button to restore functionality. Successfully replaced. iPhone worked well afterwards, 100% functional. Display replaced, also went well, iPhone was completely restored from what I could tell to complete working order, until the freeze into complete black-screen-ness.
System specs
Factory-unlocked iPhone 3G 8GB

EDIT: Heres a step-by-step of what happened for additional clarity and to help suppress my anxiety about the possible death of yet another phone.
Step One: Turned phone on.
Step Two: Swiped to get to main menu screen.
Step Three: Menu screen frozen.
Step Four: Attempt to power off. Still frozen.
Step Five: Attempt soft reset.
- Screen goes black
- finger slips off of home button
- Apple logo never shows up, signaling the reboot
- Screen still black
And thats how I got to where I am now! I'm sad.

Try removing your SIM card and then performing a reset.

DFU mode has only resulted in the same thing as recovery mode happening, unfortunately. :d
Nothing at all seems to work, and I can't find anything necessarily similar to this problem. Maybe I need to replace the logic board...
EDIT: Also tried to take out the SIM card and reset but no luck. 
EDIT EDIT: Gonna try and let it run out of battery and see if charging it from there does anything for it.

I'm not sure if the phone is really on, the only responsiveness I've been able to get out of it has been iTunes understanding that its in recovery mode.
I don't think the backlight is on, and it appears to be completely unresponsive to everything but the recovery mode initiation. :d

Now I'm getting a different error message when I try to recover the phone through iTunes.
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."
EDIT: Altering host file to attempt to see if that allows the thing to be restored. :d
! Is working! So far... and then unknown error 1601.

Can I ask why did you buy an iPhone 3G? You can't even run most apps anymore due to dated hardware and iOS version, not to mention those phones are more than 5 years old...
I'm sorry to say this, but you probably made a terrible decision buying a 5 year old phone, even if it's an apple product. You wouldn't buy any other 5-year old electronic, would you?
I'd say the problem is going to cost you so much more to diagnose and fix than getting a new phone. Seeing you're in the U.S., why not go for an iPhone 4S under contract for like $99?

He probably bought it when it came out and doesn't get a new phone every generation? o.O I'm sure he knows the price of current iPhones as does most everyone.
