Hey guys. Recently ive noticed that starcraft 2 has been sputtering while playing (like every few seconds it would freeze for a frame or two, then continue smoothly). i was curious so i ran my usual programs to clean my registry, delete temporary files, scanned for virsus etc but to no avail. i then checked task manager and i saw that 2.85gb of my 4b is being used o.o (while doing nothing). usual it hovers around 1.4gb. i checked the processes running and didn't see anything that could add up to that amount. is it possible my anitvirus missed something? (bitdefender 2011 btw)

my specs are: core 2 duo 2.0ghz
4gb ddr2
nvidia geforce 9600m gt.
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

and yeah before this i was able to run sc2 on medium perfectly fine, this is just a recent issue. so any idea what might be using up all my ram?

no like i said, the processes in task manager dont even come close to add up to 2.8gbs. the most is firefox which uses 400mb. everything else is way less.

In Task Manager, hit "Show Processes from All Users."

Weird that your ram usage in task manager doesn't add up.

Run it in safe mode and check?

Under the performance tab in the task manager hit resource monitor. Then click the memory tab and sort by Commit I think it was. I used to have a problem where audiodg.exe or something along those lines would be using like 2gb of RAM but it was requested through a service or something so it just wouldn't show up in the task manager, but would in the resource monitor

So the programs in task manager don't add up to 2.8gb of ram usage?

Your ram might be stuffed, try running memtest, see what it says.

alright thanks, ill be performing the memtest shortly. also ive noted that when i restarted my computer, the ram usuage is normal at first (around 1.4gb) but after a few hrs, it seems to climb higher and higher for no apparent reason. (whole time ill be browsing the web or w/e).

Windows Vista and 7 use RAM quite a bit differently than previous iterations. If you don't like your system using your RAM as a cache and would prefer it be a more available "pool" then you should turn off SuperFetch.

A few things:

1) Disabling superFetch is a stupid Idea. Windows is using all your unused ram as cache for things it thinks you might want to have in memory. This is good, because otherwise all your extra ram is just not being used for anything at all. If the System or any other program needs that ram, then it will be removed from the cache and given to the process that needs it, so there is absolutely no reason to disable this. Why have 4GB of ram if you don't use it for something?

2) Few people understand that the memory usage reported in the Task manager is the "Private working set" of each process. This is the amount of NON-SHAREABLE memory that each process is using, as it is very common for processes to SHARE memory via things like commonly used DLL's, especially for programs that display windows and use other GUI API's.

As a result, the sum of all the private working sets of all processes will never add up to the total amount of allocated memory your system is using, as this doesn't count any of the shareable memory that processes may be sharing. If they reported how much each process was using including shared memory, then it would appear as though each process were using more memory than it is, since the shared memory would be counted multiple times for each process when you summed it up. So there is no easy way to simply say how much memory a process is using because it just isn't that simple, and people will be confused no matter how you represent it.

Under the task manager, click on "View->Select Columns" Then check the "Memory - Working Set" box. This will display the total amount of memory each process is using, including any shared, or shareable memory, and may give you a better idea of which process are using the most.

Don't worry about cached memory if that is taking up a large portion of your RAM, as that will immediately be given up for any process that may need it, and is effectively free memory thats simply being used until something comes along needing it.

I agree that turning off SuperFetch is not ideal, but it's not entirely stupid, and he should try it and see if he notices any results. Personally I'm not convinced that's the problem, but it sounds exactly like SuperFetch is interfering with his textures loading which causes his jitters.

I haven't turned off SF since Vista but it's something he should look at.
