Everyday is see a new Keyboard threat on TL.net and while i really like the new trend of getting mechanical keyboards all those threads lack information and structure.
So the purpose of this thread is to provide a poll on what keyboards you guys are using and what switches it has. Also, for Europeans getting a mechanical keyboard is really hard and finding a reseller with decent shipping cost and support almost impossible so i hope all u europeans out there will contribute to the thread and share your information on internet shops and stuff.
Since there are 3 "new keyboard / which keyboard to buy" etc threads on the Tech Support Frontpage i would encourage all of you guys to just vote here, post retailers and get this daily keyboard threads over with...
Do you guys want to make a list of people with a mech keyboard and which one they have and are willing to take questions so that people looking for a specific keyboard can ask those people directly?
Hey, I hope this works to reduce the clutter in Tech Support. Lately its been a more "Mouse and keyboard recommendations" sub forum. Thanks, its about time someone stepped up, haha.
Probably the Rosewill RK-9000. It's almost identical to the NKRO Filco with blue switches, and if you catch it when it's on sale, you can get it for as little as $85.
Just received my Razer Black Widow today (replacing my Logitech G15) and it is a complete dream to type on. Membrane keyboards definitely feel weird now. I was thinking of getting a Filco but spending over a hundred dollars on a keyboard just wasn't an option for me.
I feel that people make too much of a deal out of the blue switch sounds. It's not THAT loud. The clicking is incredibly satisfying and I would only be worried if you were living in the same room as someone else.
I am debating getting a Daskeyboard Professional, or a Blackwidow. Can anyone with experience / ownership of either give me input on how they compare? I have typed on the Daskeyboard and move the Cherry MX Blue switches. Is that Blackwidow's tactile feel the same?
Honestly after looking over what keyboards you have on the poll, you haven't even scratched the surface of what's out there and only have like 3-4 well known (and somewhat overpriced) options.

well u can ask here and hopefully someone will pick it up.

this site seems to be in taiwanese, is there a english vers. of this site or do we have to use google?

Regarding the switches there is no difference in tactile feel. They may be different in sound and overall feel due to the keycaps, but i havent noticed any real difference between my filco blue and the DAS my friend has.

Im totally aware that there are hundreds of different keyboards out there. I was doing some research on the G80 lately and found out its only like 50 Euros. I toyed around with the idea of buying one for it seemed to have that 90s oldschool feel to it. Well for this thread i sticked with the "most popular" brands since these are the ones ppl seem to get. Also there are only 12 slots in the poll and that was another reason. But hey write a few words about the keyboard and provide some information on the various versions of this keyboard (there seem to be like 100 diff. versions of the G80) and we can include this as an alternative.
Using a Steelseries 6gV2 myself. After some research I've noticed some people really really don't care too much for the black switches, I don't really have any problem with em. Maybe that's because the 6gV2 is my first ever mechanical keyboard and it was an upgrade from a Logitech G15.
being from Germany, I would really enjoy having a nice mechanical keyboard with brown cherry switches and the N-key-rollover, however, I can't seem to find one that has a german keyboard layout (with the ö, ä, ü vowels). How do european starcraft pros solve that problem?
Obviously if you lived in the US or in South Korea you would have much better access to the right gear (for example TLO using a dt-35 i think) but what kind of keyboards do european players like morrow, whitera, dimaga, huk etc. use?
I know there is a german version of the filco 104 with brown switches keyboard coming out in January but it will cost around 200$ and i would prefer getting a keyboard rather sooner than later. There is also the cherry g80-3000 but i think that it doesn't have the NKR technology. Also there ist "Das Keyboard Model S" which seems to be solid as well.
OP needs to be corrected. Elitekeyboards doesn't have Filcos for sale at the moment (not out of stock -- totally not for sale) due to issues with the manufacturer. It does have Topres and HHKBs though.

edit: sorry i was mistaken, i thought u were talking about keyboardco.com.
regarding Elitekeyboards: i will not go looking for you guys wherether any of those shops have filcos in store right now, this thread is just a tool for your own research.
I don't know anything about keyboards but I just skimmed the geekhack article. Those old IBM keyboards were mechanical? I grew up using those IBM keyboards and I hated them compared to more modern keyboards... I dunno I feel like the action on those were too high and it took too much effort and time to type. Are modern mechanical keyboards better?
Also, anyone who is interested in the Duckys should check out the following links. Ducky 1087 and Ducky 9008 on GeekHack.
Apparently, there a few issues with the build quality of the Duckys but these were mostly noticed after ripping them apart and they maybe issues only if you are total purists like those on GH. I am sure no regular joe would notice them given they are priced nearly 40% less than the Filcos. But still something worth keeping in mind if you are in for the Duckys.
Plus, I also found this VR-Zone thread which had some interesting stuff regarding the Tenkeyless Ducky keyboard.
The more and more I read about it, the Duckys seem like perfect alternative for people looking for a budget mechanical keyboard that can offer a similar experience to the Filcos without paying way over-the-head for them.
Anyone have any specific stores in Canada that carry them? So far, I'm pretty much only found newegg.ca that carries one model (not inc Steelseries and Razer), the Rosewill RK-9000 with blues.
I want to find a store that carries some form of browns, I'm kinda scared to ship cross border because I'm not sure how customs and that stuff works out.
IBM Model M from 1987. Seriously though I need a new mechanical keyboard that's not as loud - that particular keyboard is...pretty noisy for someone who is now in college with a roomate, although it was fine when i was at home =_=
i own both ibm model m and filco cherry mx blue. From my experience the model m is almost twice as loud asthe Filco and also emits something i would describe as a hollow metallic echo with every keystroke (from the springs).
also to ppl not recommending the filco blue because of the double tap problem (reset point of the switch is higher than the activation point) might want to look at this video... this guy doesnt seem to have any problems with it

Is the 6vg2 better or worse than 7g?
If you don't need the wrist rest, the extra USB hubs and audio ports, then no, the 7G isn't better.
As for other "where to buys" You can buy Steelseries 6GV2/7G (currently out of stock) and Das Keyboards at NCIX (Canada/US). You can also buy Steelseries 6GV2 and Razer Blackwidows at MemoryExpress (Canada).

It's only in Chinese unfortunately, a shame really because it is a very good shopping site, one of the best in Taiwan with really good range.
Do they sell filcos with korean/english keyboards?
What do you mean? Like having hangul and English alphabet printed on the keys? Probably not, they might have a Japanese version though. The picture all have Chinese character make up + English (Taiwaness version) but the keyboard themselves are language neutral.
Why does Elitekb stop selling Filco ? -___- I mean, they can't handle the heat ? FD's keyboard help them to sell like thousands of kb, they out of stock for like 2 days.

Well before SC2 caused a flood of people to buy Filco keyboards, EK was fine because it would only get small shipments periodically. Now that there is tons of demand, Filco can't supply the keyboards much faster and is too unreliable to meet the needs of customers. Therefore, he's working on getting another source of Cherry MX switch keyboards that can provide a more reliable supply, for the benefit of both customers and his business. Demand is great, but not if there is no product to sell.
BTW, for people wondering what happened to EliteKeyboards, I got this mail from them recently.
FILCO products have been in short supply recently, and this has been due to our supplier not being able to meet market demand. We're very sorry for this inconvenience; particularly at this time of the year!
Unfortunately, despite our recent efforts, our supply of FILCO products will not be improving, so we have taken this turn of events as an opportunity to search for alternative products which can meet our customers' demands.
So without beating around the bush too much, in Jan/Feb 2011 EK will offer a new keyboard line-up with Cherry MX switches!
These boards will replace all FILCO products (and then some. We've selected them with much discretion, and believe they will meet or exceed the quality and functionality of FILCO products and provide a better value in a very competitive market!
Further details to follow on our website soon. We appreciate your continued support!
So, yeah, people will have to look elsewhere for the Filcos. Although I am really interested in the other brand EK are in for. I have a feeling it might be the Duckys since they are growing in popularity and seem to be extremely well built and generally solid all-around. We'll just have to see.
P.S: If mods could sticky this thread, plus one each of the large mouse and headphone threads, it would cut down on the spamming of KB/Mouse/Headset threads. Nowadays, every other thread seems to be about one of these topics and stickying will help alleviate that to some extent I feel.
Just bought a Cherry g80-3000 with brown switches. It's my first mechanical keyboard, and well.. it's okay.
It's pretty loud. I'm using it at work right now and my co-workers already bitched about it. Not sure if I can even use it at home with my girlfriend sleeping in the next room. I like the sound, but it sure is loud when youre typing fast, even if you don't bottom out the keys. Cherry blue's would definitely be unusable for me. It feels pretty nice, but nothing too out of the ordinary. No way this would make you a better starcraft player in any way.
All in all it's decent, not sure if it's worth 55 Euros. I definitely wouldn't pay the price of a Filce / DAS / Razer
I've been thinking of going mechanical for a while but the fact that they are all high profile keys makes me a bit iffy. I much prefer low profile keyboards, and the one I'm using right now (microsoft sidewinder x6) feels absolutely fine, although I have never experienced mechanical before. I think the typing style is slightly different for low profile keyboards, more sliding/gliding action which I prefer.
Anyone had experience switching from low profile to mechanical? Is it worth it?
I've been using low profile keyboard almost exclusively for the past few years.
I can type very well on the Cherry browns, even tho the keys are high profile. It's like you said, low profile is more of a sliding thing, but I don't find the high keys uncomfortable, and I can type pretty damn fast on the cherry browns.
Still, it's not like it's the holy grail under your fingers, in the end it's just another (high quality) keyboard.
I know I am probably the only one, but I use the unicomp remakes of the IBM model M keyboards. I love the clickity keys. Newer style keyboards are far too sensitive or feather-touch for me. I make a lot more mistakes, but with the older style Model M's I have complete control. They are expensive, but I cannot find anything that I love better and people who use my comp tell me they hate the thing at first, but it grows on them and I have gotten others to go out and buy on.
EDIT: haha. I did not read the forum well enough that this is what it is all about. That is my bad. I suggest the Unicomp models. I love them!

Actually, you got a Cherry clear keyboard. Simply take off a key, you'll see. Far more heavy than Blues or Browns. I sold mine after a week.
Oh my god, I actually feel so stupid right now... i figured "tactile touch" must be browns, you're totally right, the switches are white.
And I was wondering why they feel so heavy whereas the brows should have such a light activiation force. I've been typing like 40 pages today and I gotta admit the sound and feel is just lovely. Typing on my old rubberdome right now and it feels like a toy.
don't get me wrong, it's still just a keyboard and I wouldn't get a mechanical keyboard for gaming, that's for sure. But I might just keep it at work because typing on the cherry feels just great.
Well Fox, because of you, I had to order a g80-3000 with cherry blues, just to try out "the real deal"
i have tried both brown and blue switches and actually found brown switches feel "cheap", like there is no feedback to a keypress at all and typing on it didnt feel too good. Thats why i got my filco blue and im lovin the feedback and the click on keypress. Its actually not as loud as ppl think. i can press keys and double tap twice as fast i can only recommend on getting blues.

Cherry MX switches are the high ones, but there are low profile mechanical switches called Cherry MLs. If you are unwilling to adapt, you may want to try a keyboard with ML switches.
I used a sidewinder x6 before I got my mechanical. I used it for a while before changing keyboards, and I still keep my x6 around just in case because its a nice keyboard. If I were you I would only spring for mechanical after the x6 starts to wear out or you find a good deal.

If you feel sad, try to empathize with Brian of EK. He probably is the saddest person in the world. So many people wanted a mech for the holidays/after GSL and he would have been in the perfect position to move so much inventory, if he actually had an inventory. And superpricey topres don't count.

Alright! Got my Daskey Ultimate today. First impressions are the usual: Looks badass, clicks like a boss. Keys are a little lighter than I'm used to, but a few days of gaming and typing should sort that out in a jiffy. This is the first mechanical keyboard I've owned, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but it seems really really good as far as I can tell.
On a side note, I ordered mine from getdigital.de and... Well: + Show Spoiler +
Yup, candy and Fuckin' magnets (four 5mm cubes of neodymium goodness). Yes, I realize this is a viral marketing scheme on their part. It worked.
Edit: Turns out they actually mailed me a model S Silent, not regular. Not a problem imo, the keys are loud enough as they are.
On December 13 2010 02:10 Drey wrote: Can someone help me find a decent keyboard non mechanical around the price or below G15 ?
Microsoft sidewinder x4 is a great keyboard for mmo's and fps and still works for rts it's keys are half height so they still stick up and out and aren't completely flat. could have picked one up for 25 bucks during black friday you can find them for around 40-50 though without the deal.
I ordered a cherry G80 with mx blues, just like I said, and I recieved it in the mail today. I can only compare it to the cherry G80 with the cherry clear switches, but so far I have to say, I like the clear version more than the blues.
The sound is pretty annoying. It's not like the blues are much louder than the clears, and the clicking part isn't even that loud. It just sounds.. kind of hollow. The sound of the clears is more low pitched, paired with the heavier actuation force, you're getting the feeling of using a quality product. The blues emit a really high pitched noise, together with the click and the real light keys, it just feels "cheap" to me.
The feel is okay, but I've had better rubberdomes to be honest. With the cherry blues I can't really press the keys just far enough to activate the switch like I can with the clears. I always bottom out the keys on the blues, because it requires much less force to push them down.
Also, I do have problems with double tapping. Spamming 4qqqqqqqq didn't always produce 8 workers for me. And even writing that right now, I had to press "q" 9 times because it didn't register the press one time.
So the blue is definitely a no go for me. don't like it for gaming, don't like it for typing, don't like it for anything to be honest.
Now I don't know wheter I should even give the cherry browns a try, or if I should just stick with the clears. If the browns really feel lighter than the blues, I don't know if they're right for me.
the double tapping problem is known for blues. the problem is something like that the actuation point of them is above the bump, so you have to release it completely to actuate it again. the browns don't have that.
i found the clears boring, the only switches i would like to try now are browns.
Yeah I know, but most people say it's not a big deal. But it turned out it's a huge deal for me. Didn't expect that.
Really disappointed with the cherry blues. I really wanted to like them.
I'm using the cherry clears at work now, and everyday when I come home and have to use my rubberdome keyboard it feels like I'm using a toy.
Still, I wouldn't get a mechanical keyboard strictly for gaming, because in my experience, it makes absolutely NO difference at all. I can't say it improved my accuracy. The awesome feel of mechanical keyboards is not noticeable to me when gaming, but it sure is when I'm typing.
I might just grab a used DAS keyboard on ebay just so I can say I tried them all. Definitely sending back the G-80 with the blues.
since i am bottoming out on EVERY Keyboard i dont mind the higher reset point of the blues at all. maybe there is a difference between the g80 and the filco... but i absolutely love the cherry blues :D
The problem with doubletapping is not a matter of bottoming out the keys or not. The problem lies in releasing the keys because the reset point is higher than the activation point.
You press the key, the you want to release it, you feel the bump when releasing and you want to press the key again but the switch hasn't deactivated. You feel the bump, your brain goes:" time to press the next key" but in reality you have to let go even further. That kinda makes the tactile bump counter-intuitive. It feels completely unnatural to me.
Haha, reading the posts above me I'm actually glad that getdigital mailed me the wrong keyboard. (Model S Silent instead of regular, browns instead of blues) Tbh I think the keys are loud enough as they are. Guess I'll just run with it and try to get used to the 45 gram pressure.
Does anyone keeping up to date with keyboards right now what the lowest price mechanical keyboards are? I've done a little bit of searching and the cheapest I can find is the Razer Black Widow, but my only quip with that one is that the F1-F4 keys aren't directly lined up with the number keys. I know it sounds stupid, but I'm mainly getting a mechanical keyboard for sc and that's how i've been playing.
EDIT: I'm often playing in an environment where I need to keep the noise to a minimum. I know mechanical keyboards are loud. Can anyone with browns give me an idea of how much quieter they are than the blues or blacks? Thinking maybe I should try one.
I bought my Filco brown switch from the geekhack classifieds. Might want to mention that since it can help when Elitekeyboards is completely out of stock.

Just means brown switches instead of blue. I think that's a plus!
Just bought a blue chinese full-size filco majestouch with brown switches off some chinese site mentioned in the other threads. I'll post when I get it.
Hi guys, great thread. I'm wondering (and hoping) if I can get some help. Over the past 2 weeks I've been doing some basic research on Mech Keyboards because I'm extremely interested in them and want to buy one soon.
Here's my options and reasoning's behind them. I'll put them in a spoiler tag so the post isn't too long if you don't want to read it.
Filco Majestouch Blue Switch. This was my first choice but I think the sound would be too annoying to the people around me so it's kind of a non-option atm.
Filco Majestouch Black Switch. I love the Filco boards and I want the feelings and sound of the mech switches and I don't want the silence of the brown, Is this the board that's least likely to annoy people but still feel and sound awesome to me?
Steelseries 7g: I love the look and sound of this board but I lacks the obvious awesomeness in looks and customization of the Filco's.. (eg. Red and Blue keys, or the limited edition ItalianRed and ElectricBlue faceplates.
It's worth noting that when I buy one of these keyboards I plan to have it for a long time so I need to make the perfect decision, I feel like it would be worth it to go with the Filco because of the customization features making it less likely for me to get "bored" with it, but the Steelseries 7g looks so bulky and nice.
Thanks for any advice.
Edit: Oh and also when I decide which one to buy and it gets here I will post my first impressions and a review or something if anyone wants.

Hi mate,
welcome to the mech club
IMO, first of all you should base your consideration on what are you going to do with the keyboard?
Are you going to use it mostly for typing? Or are you going to use it mainly for gaming? What type of gaming?
I was probably going the same thing as you, I did some research, look others opinion and then watching/listening videos of some keyboards, and finally going to the market to feel it with my own hands. In the end I choose FILCO brown. (I tried blue and black too before I decided).
My reason for brown:
1. I use my keyboard mostly for typing, and for light gaming. I play mostly soccer (FIFA series) with my rumblepad, and some RTS (mainly SC2). So for this reason it seems that blue/brown is the only way to go. I don't really like the feel of black switch when typing on it. Black might be good for FPS or any games that mostly will be bottoming the keyboard.
2. The sound. I found that I actually like the sound of blue the most. But the clicking sound might be annoying for my house mate. So I decided to get the brown in the end.
Now it comes the fun part: Even the sound of the brown is not as silent as I expected to be, lol. To make the sound minimum I supposed you need to be a touch typist (without hammering/bottoming the keys too much). Although it doesn't have the clicking sound, but the sound when the keycap hits the bottom and when it bounce back is still a bit loud :D
So, again I think you'll need to consider on what are you going to do with it first before jumping to conclusion.
EDIT: I'm often playing in an environment where I need to keep the noise to a minimum. I know mechanical keyboards are loud. Can anyone with browns give me an idea of how much quieter they are than the blues or blacks? Thinking maybe I should try one.
My post above might give you some hint.
If you really need a silent keyboard, I think mechanical keyboard is not the answer. I yet to find a silent mechanical keyboard. Some rubber domes and scissor switch is quieter in my experience.
But yes, compare with blue / black, I think brown is less louder. Perhaps between black and brown is similar, or black is slightly less louder due to non tactile and non clicky.
Find some vids on tube if you can't try it first hand to give you a more proper idea.

Cheers ^^
Thank you for your response, I will be using the keyboard for various game including SC2, HoN and on occasion WoW. Ofcourse I will use it for typing but not in a serious fashion (writing papers ect).
I think my original thoughts on the Brown switches was quite wrong as it actually still produces quite a beautiful sound. I don't have any way of testing before I buy because of where I live so I have to base the sound/feel off youtube videos and a keyboard simulator which I'm not even sure is accurate. Again thank you for your response, so far I think I'm gonna go with the Filco Majestouch brown switch.
I just ordered a Rosewill RX-9000 Blue switch and I cannot wait to get it. My GF accidentally spillt Pop on my Razer Lycosa (which kinda sucked anyways) so it gave me a excuse to buy a new Keyboard. So annoying playing on a keyboard where half the keys stick. I tried my best to clean it but some keys still do not work.
I am gonna be like a nerd on Christmas when this keyboard arrives. So excited.

It sounds like you've already figured this out, but just want to point out again that if your first choice is blue you definitely should get brown. Both have tactile feel (a "bump" of sorts in the pressure graph) at the point where the key registers. Blues just make an artificial click noise at this point as well to simulate the old Model M spring keyboards.
Blacks have a very different feel since the pressure graph is linear. Often said to be better for gaming, I think it's more a personal opinion.
I would suggest going with a Filco brown switch (what I did, love it). As you've mentioned in your other posts, the noise of the brown is great too. It's not "silent" by ANY stretch of the imagination. It's just that there isn't a part of the keyboard that JUST to make noise (like the blue).

No problem
That is a nice simulator. I tried the Razer blacwidow, the Filco brown and one of those black switch. For the blackwidow and FILCO brown I guess it pretty much can give you an idea of how it actually sound. I bookmarked that link, might find it useful later Thanks
Okay would I rather get a razer marduer gaming keyboard or a logitech g15. I would think razer just because I know them but also know(read: think) logitech is good too but I'm pretty unsure. Which should I get?
Seems cheap and has cherry brown switches. Im using a 1$ keyboard right now and I love it, but its going out-so im not picky. I just want cherry brown for softness.
On December 28 2010 05:21 Bluetea wrote: Is there a reason you don't have Logitech listed?
I think most people here are looking for a mechanical keyboard, and Logitech does not currently make any mechanical keyboards. Not that I know of at least.
Ultra thin keyboards generally are not well suited for any gaming because they are more delicate and the switches can not withstand the amount of keystrokes that gaming uses. I spammed '12e' while playing SC2 on my Microsoft keyboards and they died within 3-4 months of heavy gaming :/

Yeah Ducky is a good brand. I don't have any personal experience but from what I hear they are very similar to Filco.
buckling spring keyboards are still the best , the key switches last longer than the cherry models. i would take the cherry ones over the rubber domes though.

Not the case with my Logitech Ultraflat keyboard. I use it for more than a year, probably even more than 2 yrs before I switched to FILCO. It's a great keyboard, although I don't dare to compare it with mech like FILCO, Deck etc. But for a 15$ keyboard it's a really great one.
Logitech Ultraflat probably was the keyboard that I used for the longest time. Due to all my previous works, I need to move a lot and normally I just give my old keyboard to somebody before I move out, and just buy a new one. I never spent for more than 15$ for keyboards before, until I found FILCO which made me willing to spend 10x more for a keyboard T_T.

True, I really miss the feel of good ol' IBM model M.
On December 28 2010 19:24 FragKrag wrote: model Ms are all over ebay lol
Getting one from eBay coming in to my country is difficult (eventually importing goods is really difficult in my country *sigh), so eBay is really not an option for me.
Besides for this one I would prefer to try it first :D
I got my Rosewill RK-9000 cherry brown Keyboard in the mail today and wanna give my opinion of it. Its a very heavy keyboard because its lined with a red steel board for added durability (alot like the 7G) Overall the Blue switches feel great. They are noisy as expected, but have a great soft feel to them. The cord is a heavy duty think cord with a very strong gold lated USB. I do not see me needing a new keyboard for a long time. This thing is built like a tank.
Overall this keyboard is great. Its a cheaper option for a Cherry switch board, but not such a low quality as the Razer Blackwidow. Everything inside is built with Filco parts, so its very trusted as quality parts. For 100$ on Newegg I would highly recommend this board to anyone looking for a good mechanical board.
Just thought I would share for anyone shopping. Best self Christmas present ever!
So I've been looking for a new keyboard for quite some time now but can't find exactly what I want. One of my main concerns is sound. I've looked around quite a bit for a review comparing the loudness from one keyboard to another but haven't had much luck. I'm assuming the different switches have different loudness levels, please correct me if i'm wrong. Originally I was going to get the Das Silent keyboard but after seeing a review on Youtube it seems they are not so silent. Another thing I really want is a keyboard with 2 USB ports in it. The Das & 7g have this I know the Blackwidow Ultimate has1 is there anymore options with USB ports I do not know about? Lastly is cost, I don't want to spend more than $150 on it which I don't think would be a problem but you never know.
tl:dr I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard that has 2 usb ports, isn't very loud and is under $150.
On January 16 2011 10:05 Ubes wrote: tl:dr I'm looking for a keyboard that has 2 usb ports, isn't very loud and is under $150.
keyboards with USB ports aren't common because they aren't allowed to be powered with just one USB connector. Just get a powered USB hub from dealextreme or whatever, they're cheap
Microsoft Sidewinder x4 / x6 have fairly quiet buttons
Well powered is very different, also most are usb 1.0 not 2.0 which are very different. in terms of performance With a keyboard that only takes up 1 usb spot you can only hope for one usb 2.0 port on that keyboard to be nearly fully functional.
2 of them would just end up not at all powered only way to solve that would be to use another usb port or add a power brick. In otherwords expect usb ports on your computer case not on your keyboard and if you do only expect one.
Also you wont find a mechanical keyboard that's quiet and "tactile" part of it being tactile is it making a click.

The Das has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB plugs, one for the keyboard (with or without PS/2 adapter), the other for the hub. Should the hub not be able to power everything that's plugged into it, it shuts off one port.
tl;dr: get the Das, it's a fine keyboard. Get the Silent one if you need to but I recommend the clicky. The click itself isn't as loud as the internet wants to make you think and the sound is very nice.

silent is brown, normal is blue, what most people don't like about blue is not the volume of the noise but the pitch.
And yeah essentially to get the 2 usb 2.0 ports they made a usb hub and shoved it into the keyboard which just seems like lazy designing.

Will that affect my ability to type in both English and Japanese? I need both functions, and from what I understand, a Japanese keyboard will allow me to do both. (I already have a razer Lycosa).

to be honest i don't type in two languages so i don't know how hard it is to use it http://www.itechtalk.com/thread11582.html But i don't see how a usb keyboard from japan would function any more efficiently then having to manually switch between the two on the os side. from what i've seen it only takes 1 2 clicks to switch between the language or if you binded a key. the only trick is remembering all the keys so you dont need on screen display
DO NOT GO WITH NON MECHANICAL KEYBOARDS SUCH AS RAZER MARAUDER!
Everyone please don't consider any keyboard that is NOT mechanical.
I bought the Filco Majestouch - Cherry Brown switches and it's THE BEST 160 BUCKS I HAVE EVER SPENT ON GAMING!
sc2 is alot more fun now, my old LYCOSA SUCKED! god what a piece of crap that lycosa was.
Filco Majestouch - Cherry Browns (best keyboard out there for sure!)
You can also go with Das Keyboard as long as you get Cherry browns (or blues if you like to type alot too)
I wouldn't say that i'm way better with my Filcos, but I enjoy the game alot more. I'm not just some noob suggesting bs either, I'm in master league and trust me get mechanical keyboards preferably cheery mx browns.
You do not need a "Japanese" keyboard to type in Japanese. In fact I don't believe there is any language that requires a keyboard with a layout other than the standard Roman QWERTY. I use Alt-Shift to 日本語に変わる.
Many keyboards designed for foreign markets have extra labels on them. There's an option in most IMEs (Input Method Editors, the part of your OS that determines how the stuff you type on the keyboard comes out) to type in Japanese where one key = one kana character, but that's difficult and most native speakers don't type like that. Most use the method where you type the character out in roman characters and it comes out in Japanese kana, then you choose the kanji that you need. Japanese-market keyboards usually have the kana labels on them, just in case you want to use them that way. French-market keyboards have the keys for the accents labeled, but you can use an American keyboard to type perfect French just fine, and vice-versa.
I have a Razer Lycosa myself, and I've generally liked it the last few years, but I'm going to switch to a mechanical. I really would like a definitive answer on whether the Das Keyboard Silent is significantly quieter than most mechanicals. While I wouldn't expect it to be as quiet as a laptop or something, is it comparable to, say a cheap Dell membrane?
for that money get a sidewinder x6 razer keyboards like their audio products have a pretty shotty build quality reputation. And at least the x6 have full 6+4 key rollover and a swaping numpad for those who like small keyboards along with all the ususal media keys etc.
I got the filco majestouch tenkeyless with brown switches, and a separate usb filco numberpad also with brown switches:D Def want the numberpad for a few things and liking that setup way more (with numberpad to the left of the keyboard) more than just a full keyboard with numpad to the right of the other keys
You mean the double wide space between the a and caps lock on logitech gaming keyboards? i only know logitech that does that none of the logitech keyboards are very probable in terms of size, if you want a portable keyboard go get a sidewinder x6 and lop off the num pad when you don't need it. Although personally i rather spend 20 less and get a x4 which has like 11 key rollover which i can probably find on sale for around 30-40 which is all you need in a keyboard for gaming media keys an adjustable backlight etc it also doesn't suffer from roll over limitations like the x6
I hadn't seen any information on the G510 so I figured I'd post my thoughts!
I just bought a new computer and got a Razer Lycosa with it. I returned the Lycosa withing 24 hours. The keys were tough, difficult to press down, and impossible to spam. I went out and bought a Logitech G510 hoping for a better setup.
The keys on the G510 are VERY light. Compared to the Lycosa it was like pressing on little mini cloud-pillows. Since the keys are so light to the touch, if you're used to the slightly heavier feel of mechanical keyboards like the Black Widow then take caution, but for someone like myself who likes / is used to a very light feel, then I would recommend this keyboard 100%.
For Starcraft 2 the macro keys are useless and excessive, but if you are an MMO player as well these can come in handy. Same with the LCD display on the keyboard. These two features run up the price of this keyboard and are not necessary.
Another thing to mention about this keyboard is the Windows key. On the Lycosa, that damn Windows key was so huge that every time I went for control I had a 50/50 chance of accidentally hitting the Windows key, which was bigger than the control key. On the G510 the Windows key is a lot smaller, the control key is bigger, and the spacing is that which you won't mis-click.
The keys on the G510 are a bit smaller than the keys of the Lycosa, so if you're going from a larger keyed keyboard to the G510 it might take some getting used to. Don't get this keyboard if you have big fingers.
Lastly, the backlighting is disappointingly dim. They have addressed this "problem" as saying that they didn't want any light to leak out of the sides of the keys, and since the font face on the keys isn't that large, the lighting isn't too bright. If you're in a dark room, you'll be able to see it fine, but if you have a light on the back light is nearly invisible. The one thing that the Lycosa beats this keyboard on is the backlighting.
Pros: Very Light to the Touch, Windows Key Positioning, Smaller Keys Cons: Backlighting is Dim, Price (~$100) is a bit much
Other: Macro Keys are a bit excessive for SC2, great for MMO's, LCD display is also a bit excessive
Recommendations: Consider buying one of these if you like a very light touch. Typing is AMAZING on this keyboard and spamming is very smooth (especially for WoW and SC2). If you're used to a heavier touch go with the Black Widow or another beefy mechanical keyboard.
I'll be on the look-out for a keyboard like this with better back-light, less useless features, and a super light touch!
Most people don't like very bright back-lighting they just want adjustable nice enough to be noticeable at night but not glaring and bright enough for indoors during the day. The G510 has very similar keys to the G15 which is actually heavier then cherry blues, but frankly i like the sharp ness up the keypress, i don't like cherries they feel like mush to me much prefer alps or bucking. Macro keys and the screen are more for enthusiasts and overclockers. The screen is very nice when playing mmo's or being in vent channels as you can see the name of the person talking without a game overlay. Or you can see what song is playing and change songs with the media keys all good features. The useful ness of a screen is kind of weird it's one of those things you wouldn't notice until you have it for awhile. The G510 also comes with a nice large sturdy wrist rest and the rest of the board is very sturdy.
G510 G110 sidewinder x4 personally i like the x4 the best it's the bare essentials for a media gaming keyboard and it does it very well. I just hope the tech used for the x4 is migrated over to razer and logitech products so all gaming keyboards can have 11 key roll over without a hitch technically more like 17 but theoretically like 23?

That is exactly what I'm talking about my left ring finger is finding a nice home there and if it isn't there the rest of my hand doesn't feel comfortable. I have a cheap dell keyboard at work that has the same thing and I've seen Microsoft with them. I guess I could try retraining my hand

Did you even read anything posted in the thread? Wait for Elitekeyboards to restock or get das Das Keyboard.
200 is too much? even when ek had flicos they cost like 135 without shipping or tax if applicable which would be closer to 150-180 you are sd cali does take tax on Internet items usually.
This keyboard is cheap, but has a good tactile feedback and I actually went to the store to hands on test keyboards, and I found it better than the blackwidow, although the downside is that its louder than the blackwidow but very sturdy!
oh and the backspace thing you get used to after like 3-4 hours easy. Its just somthing that you get used to :D
I ordered a Das with browns (got it for $100 total with a student discount and free shipping). Really awsome, totally worth every penny. I heard you can get the Siig at Fry's, which is really cool since mech keyboards are hard to come by at stores. If anyone is interested in mechanical keyboards you should def see if there is a store in your area that has them so you can try them first hand, you won't regret it ^_^. Krazymunky, I'd go with the Das, oh wait I already did!

the return button/enter and the backspace key is why i would never buy that.
I thought i wouldnt buy it,but i wasnt willing to put down 130 for the blackwidow ultimate, it took some getting used to but after awhile its doesnt even really bother me and after reading reviews it doesnt bother other ppl after getting used to it. Its easy just dont mess up your typing and you wont have to use the backspace button :D

You can order a Filco from ArmyGroup.com.tw (guide if you don't speak chinese) for around $150-170ish with shipping (depends on filco model, obviously). You can also order a Ducky from PCHome.com.tw (guide) with Cherry browns for 90-140ish including shipping (again, depending on the Ducky model). I recently got a blank Ducky DK-9008 w/ browns from PCHome and I am quite happy with it. Both PCHome and ArmyGroup require paypal for international orders.
Leopold/Archiss are what EK is restocking with, and they are supposed to be quite nice (never used one myself), but insofar as I am aware, there hasn't been a definite ETA released by EK.
I recently got the steel-series 6gv2, a huge step up from my 10 dollar Logitech wireless keyboard t.t
First off I have too say that blacks are fine for typing, and is a dream to play starcraft on. Really enjoying the keyboard, and the build quality is really top notch.
I was tempted to buy a Filco, but I couldn't find any anywhere and I was fine with having black switches.
so overall I really recommend the keyboard, but you might want to try (if you can) some other switches to see whether or not the blacks are for you or not
Just got my steelseries 6gv2. Playing with it just from 2-3 hours and I can clearly say, the difference with my old microsoft media keyboard 3000 is so huge.
This thing is great for starcraft, also I really enjoy typing on it. I never tested other keys, they may be better for typing, but black feels really nicer compared to good 'normal' keyboard.
I like the standart oldschool layout, the big enter, backspace and shift and the F keys. Its a shame that 'modern' keyboards have these little enters, so I hit the '\' key every time I want to send a chat msg.
The volume keys are easy to use, and enjoyable, cause they are starcraft style function key+f2 like ctr+2
Avter the adaptation period I will share my experience, and yeah ..sorry for my bad english.
Just thought I'd post this deal in this thread too since it is the comprehensive keyboard guide.
PCHome has an awesome deal right now on a lot of the Filco models which they just got back in stock, thanks to a heads up from the guys at Geekhack.
This includes the tenkeyless cherry browns (the one that FruitDealer was known for using when he won GSL that started the mechanical keyboard craze here at TL, if I'm not mistaken) along with blues and blacks.
They also have full-size keyboards available too!
I just ordered a tenkeyless brown for $130, WITH SHIPPING! Pretty amazing deal. It's $10 shipping to anywhere in the US (and I think anywhere in the world, but I'm not sure of that).
