I'm not surprised at all that Twitter is popular. Its like Womans Day, or E-Weekly real time. You get to catch up on celebrity gossip real time. Its also quite good for news... but Oprah 'n' co' have hijacked what little real use it had before, and now its just one big gossip medium.

The update about how everyone wins will most likely be invalid after 3 more days. The general tendency for competitions like these is that during the last few days the number of registrants increases exponentially.

If the current rate of submissions keeps up for the rest of the competition, chances would be maybe a couple percent. If it increases (which I think it will do thanks to that blizzard tweet) it will fall to a fraction of a percent.

i smell bullshit as well. When i registered (first day) Starcraft had 3k followers. At the time of posting that "everyone would get a beta key" they had over 9k. I'm sure that 5500+ of those followers arent random people joining and not applying

Well if the entry has to fit a certain format then its very possible they haven't reached the 500 people. That or they might be hinting that they're going to give a beta key to everyone. :D

hmm for some strange reason I remember reading somewhere (the terms and conditions on blizzard's site perhaps? iunno) that they would be picking the top daily entries, tossing all of these entries into a pool and then drawing the 500 from that...
if so, the people who signed up the earliest have way better chances as apparently the number of entries didn't pick up until a couple days ago

They had 9000 followers when they said "if the contest ended today everyone who entered would get a key" and since then it went up to 13000. So I'd put the number of entrants at around 5 or 6000

I also thought most of the followers would enter, but I did a spot check of followers of starcraft... I counted by randomly picking a follower page and then randomly clicking on an entry with my eyes closed. My science teacher would be proud.
Out of 21 I chose before I got bored, only 7 actually entered. It seems like a lot of people following are foreigners who don't speak english, wow people who subscribed to all of blizzard's usernames but didn't enter, people who seem to have not entered or mentioned starcraft at all for some unknown reason, either they didn't know or they didn't care or there is some other force causing people to autosubscribe, like possibly new users are subscribed sometimes? There were also a lot of people who didn't do it right by putting @StarCraft in their messages, but who knows blizzard may take pity on them.
I thought the submission rate would be much higher at the end, but damn it was only 3 or 4 per hour on the last day in the middle of the day. So if that info I got holds up, you have a 500 in 4000 chance, or about 12% chance.
Given that they didn't even give out keys at blizzcon of all places, there may not be another chance to win as good as that one, although presumably you would imagine the blizzard beta opt in would have similar submission rate, so there's always that to look forward to.

According to http://www.hashtweeps.com/search/index , running a search for #sc2fan gives 3716 results. Assuming those are all correctly formatted, that's still a 500/3716ish chance of winning.

You need @Starcraft (directs it to the contest owner) and #SC2fan (announces you are entering the contest) in the "Tweet". I also put "RT" to be safe in case it was necessary when "re-tweeting" (responding to a message) to put that in the title but I dont think it was.

I kept a close eye on stats in the beginning and there were at least 50 entries per hour the first day or so, which would have put them way above 500. They were up to 9000 followers at that point which is 70% of what they had when it was done. So if there were 1257 in the second half when they accrued 4000 more followers, there should have been another 2950 in the early days if the follow rate compares with the contest entry rate. That sounds close to what others are coming up with.
I know what they said, but I don't believe them. I think they just said that to get more people to sign up because they were expecting more interest. Or maybe the guy behind the @starcraft didn't do a proper search.
I mean I'd love to think I have a 50% chance of getting a key, but that seems unrealistic based on what I was seeing. I'm not going to get my hopes up like that.

Really what you are doing is Re-tweeting the original message to everyone who follows your twitter account with your own personal touch. You inform all your friends of the contest's original so that they too can enter the contest (by spamming all of their followers) and thus word of SC2 will spread virally across twitter. Clever idea.
Of course, what ended up happening is a bunch of people registered twitter for the first time (possibly with multiple accounts!!) as there are a lot of messages on the #SC2fan hashtag that have the default icon and only 1 tweet on the account and bungled the idea by posting things that didn't link to the original contest or follow the format and so I doubt it worked very well.
Personally I suspect that if you have #SC2fan in your message (it's the easiest way for them to consolidate all of the messages) you are entered but it all depends on how strict blizzard decides to be.
Anyway... that was my take on the whole thing

Ok from what I read from that and the comments, there is no actual "RT" command, it's just a means of showing that you are rebroadcasting someone elses tweet on your page.
So if you sent it to @Starcraft with a #Sc2fan message, you didn't even do it right, it was supposed to be on your own page.
If you search hashtweeps.com for @Starcraft #Sc2fan which is what would come up if you included RT, you get 1250 entries. If they do it that way, then yeah the majority of people did it wrong. Obviously there is some clear miscommunication if out of 13000 followers only 1200 people managed to it right, and out of those people, how many people entered multiple times because even they didn't know how to do it correctly?
Would have been nice if they fucking explained this shit. Jesus christ I knew there was a reason I didn't bother with twitter before this, it's fucking retarded.
What pisses me off is that "RT" is not a function on Twitter, you have to go to some other website to understand what it even means. Where @Starcraft sends the message to their twitter page, common sense says if you want to enter a contest that @Starcraft is hosting, you send your entry to @Starcraft. Instead you put two letters infront of it, so that your message doesn't get sent to @Starcraft, but still you include @Starcraft which otherwise would send it to their twitter page. If that isn't the most misleading, convoluted fucking system for entering a contest, I don't know what is.
And the fact that they didn't extrapolate once on how exactly to do it pisses me off even more.
Hopefully they really are just taking the entries to #sc2fan even if you didn't use RT. In any case I am seriously annoyed by this entire thing.

Surely they won't give the keys away in such a haphazard manner? If I wanted to steal someone's key, I'd just wait until the the first keys show up here and then go through the list of twitter ids that submitted, and submit random addresses, gmail addresses, and the twitter ids of entrants.

only the person with access to the twttier account will be able to know they received the direct message, so the only way to do this would be to randomly send in A LOT of emails.... and I'm pretty sure twitter is assisting in this, and is checking to see that the emails from which prizing emails are sent match a winning twitter account....
I also thought PIN meant Beta Key.... So bummed out right now. Though in the rules it says the pins would be awarded the day after you post (ie. ten for every day), and I got mine last night and posted last week. Who knows.

The rules of the contest said that every day 10(? I think it said 10...) random contestants would be picked to win a starcraft PIN but this is basically a consolation separate from the beta key. If anything I'd be upset if I got a pin, if I understand correctly it means no beta key.

Well they gave up the pins on friday at 7 pm. Probably right before they went home for the day. Today is the first business day since friday, so if they were going to give them out, tonight would be logical. Depends on how much of a priority it is for them.

Not yet. I resent my email to them because they asked for twitter id and I sent twitter username. So in the 2d email I sent both. A confirmation email would be nice or something showing up on bnet to soothe the nerves, but it'll probably be all good.

Sorry for needlessly bumping. It's just with so few keys reported in this thread I was concerned that those people wouldn't even bother posting here after they got confirmation. I need to buy a new rig if I want to play beta, but I don't want to throw down any money until I'm 100% sure that I'm in. And it would be kinda nice to play some new high end games in the meantime on said new computer.

Has anyone else here won a beta key? I was alerted by Blizzard through my email account that I won a beta key and was told to send an email to BlizzardContest@blizzard.com, but no response. It's been a little over a week so I'm getting worried.

Whoever is running the contest is way behind. They could have automated this with a couple scripts and had everything done in a day, but instead there is probably a bunch of interns sorting through a massive pile of email instead, entering data into a spreadsheet, one by one. At the very least they could have had an auto responder set up to reply on certain words likely to be in the beta key request, to assure us that they have received our email.
Just hang in there I guess. And don't let your twitter account expire due to inactivity. Log in occasionally.

@onmach, even if they are doing this manually, one intern can do this in 2-3 days (well, possibly more since people think it's a good idea to send like 4+ emails lol). with multiple interns, it would be even easier to just split the work based on date received. i highly doubt its this that's holding back replies.. most likely they're just waiting on another group of people to tag the bnet accounts before they can send you a "congrats! check your bnet account to confirm its been tagged with whatever"
i'd give it another week or 2

with these types of contest, what happens I believe is that they will email you a beta key once the beta actually starts.

We are not getting a key. The confirmation email says that you were added to the database so you should be good to go.

we also got an email from blizzard saying we've been added to the sc2 beta db or something with "further instructions on how to participate in the beta" pending
