The April Fool's post was just from a time traveler on an unfortunate day that's all.

I'm torn on how to see this, but heck, I'll watch some of the games for sure!

Looks like there WILL be qualifiers for EWC unless this was a major oversight in phrasing.

My pleasure

I nobly declined to work EWC in the past, and while it was unfortunate that I could not support the pro SC2 scene, it was not a particularly hard decision for me.

Highly unlikely but It would be definetaly nice also if the money was nicely spread out and not just for the finalists.

Man ... It's going to suck after this tournament is over and we have to wait a year wondering if there will be an EWC in 2026 or if we will have no big tourny at all...

I can’t tell if Wax is trolling us or not, but if this is true it’s the best example of money where mouth is in all of esports! It’s depressing to feel like even a peep about legitimate human rights issues could be so triggering.

You know there's actually nothing wrong with having principles. The world would be a much better place if more people had them, or at the very least didn't pretend and betray theirs.

Oh let me transcribe (hope that word isn't censored by now over there):"I want my life to only be about myself, I don't care about what does not personally inconvenience me and I do not want others to point out my selfishness, because it makes me feel bad and forces me to reflect on myself as a person, which is something I do not wish to do, I would appreciate some acknowledgement for who I am instead."

I hope they change the format this year, having a proper group stage, or even 2 round of group stage, with double elim playoff. Last year format was weird as hell, with some player lost 1 Bo3 and gone. Also, lets start the "will MaxPax play" hype thing now.

I hope you're all ready for a dearth of previews and a lot of random nostalgia pieces.

Honestly, even without the whole sportswashing angle, completely separately they’ve dicked around the entire scene for a preposterous length of time at this point. Players and casters worrying about their futures first and foremost, us fans second.

The org is choosing to spend all of its SC2 kitty on one vanity tournament when it’s absolutely not what the scene needs.

I’m not Oliver Bloomin’ Twist with my wee bowl going ‘please sir, can I have some more’ and willing to overlook basically everything associated with this whole Saudi Shebang.

One’s mileage may vary, I’m not about to piss on everyone else’s cornflakes. Just not my cup of tea, at all. GLHF, if folks wanna watch and get enthused, cool.

I think the community has stepped up pretty well thus far, alas it’s not really enough without the skeleton of even a couple of regular circuit events to support much of a full-time pro scene of any depth. But neither is EWC without that skeleton.

Agreed, I'd rather support and watch PiG sty festival 6, a Homestory Cup, or a Master's Coloseum than this. Has very little to do with Saudi money, which I find dubious enough, but eh.... pecunia non olet. It does have everything to do with how they screwed absolutely every other organizer over with their months of uncertainty, and their "plan" is a single grand finale with no hype creation in advance. I'll just read post-hoc whether Serral or Clem won.

Yes, obviously someone playing a game is more important than political, religious, sexual and social oppression of the worst kinds

This is a pleasant surprise, especially for the players, as well as for the fans! Wish they had announced it earlier, but I guess better late than never. I'm pretty sure SC2 is the last game they announced, there always used to be a "to be announced" or "check back for more" on the EWC homepage, but no longer.

Having watched every single GSL game (though not all the Code A or qualifiers) plus tons of others since 2010, I'm ready for lots of nostalgia. Was fun when they brought back all the OG legends like 2 years back.

And agree with spreading the prize pool more with the non-finalists, otherwise, unless you end up semi-finalists or higher, the earnings basically can't pay for a living.

Yes, games are a great escape from society if you're feeling these things.

Who knew when sc2 started that its future would lie in Riadh and belarus?
I really hope the chinese scene brews smth up, it seemed very grass roots and I was impressed by the talent [players].

The announcement was supposed to generate hype, that's the only reason for this format of announcement.

If you want to get your kids excited for going to McDonalds, you say "hey, we will go to McDonalds tonight". You don't ignore them when they ask whats for dinner tonight and make them think they will have to hunger before then dropping in a bag of fries in the end...

Yeah sry, bulgaria.

Well, it's no coincidence that sc2 was revealed as the last game, it didn't work, but I think they thought this would result in the most hype. And you could make the mcdonalds thing work, you call down the kids, as you earlier told we might have mcdonalds today, then you say, "sorry mcdonalds was closed.." then as the frowns appear, you pick up the bag of mcdonalds going, "just kiddin!" And wife goes, "oooeh husband what a prankster you are." This would be a great mcdonalds commercial xD

Well, apparently WTL did do the right thing disbanding, because this year it will probably be even worse than last year. Might be the last big paycheck for any player, so why not take a few extra-bucks playing for a big Org that will 100% drop them in August?

Thats why the whole EPT announcement thing is effing frustrating. If they didnt plan to have a full circuit and just have EWC for this year, then announce it early so teams can just release players early and let them play in WTL.

Not watching this. Entertainment is not more important than human rights abuses of the worst kind. There is an abundance of other entertainment products out there that are not produced by pervasive human rights abusers.
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

If that is your stance. Then your life must be very plain, since everything that we use / consume is from some form of human right exploit. Or do you pick and choose which human right abuser to support?

Anyways, I’ll be watching it the tournament for sure. Hype.

With their Vision 2030, they are gradually increasing their stakes in various gaming companies around the world, though. Just the ones I know are EA, Take Two, Activision Blizzard, Scopely, Capcom, Nintendo, Koei, Nexon, and Embracer. In a few years, you just might not be able to watch/play much entertainment at all.

It might be a good thing that the Saudis are integrating more into the international community, that way, they will get more scrutiny in what they do. Eventually, and hopefully, change for the better.

If most people can’t scrutinise (by and large) very obvious sportswashing on relatively peripheral activities, they’re hardly going to when it’s a much deeper financial/entertainment integration.

That said, personally I have much less of an issue with x entity wanting to just make money and investing than I do with sportswashing. There’s no pretence with the former
