I have a background in UX/UI so I know a couple things about design. Starcraft 2 is a busy game with dozens of units on each side and many plays going on at once — this begs the use of clean/minimal terrain, so I'll always favor maps that have the cleanest/most modern textures, a big plus for artificial lighting for even more clarity during gameplay (like Nightscape LE). As far as layout goes, you'll have to ask the pros lol. With that said, here's my fav maps so far:

Cryogenian (reminds me of BW)
Eldeyja (My fav so far)
Cybernetic Peaks (so cool)
Primal heart

Excited about the new maps.

PS: I wish team maps also got some love.

This bright, fresh map features two special openings to the natural. Skilled wallers can set themselves apart. Combined with small map size and short rush distance, aggressive players are sure to find a chink in their opponent's armour. The centre Xel'naga tower only covers the closest ramps.

A possible protoss wall, fully blocking entry. Destructible rocks supplement both walls. Other configurations are available to allow openings on either side. Rocks on the ground to the south of the natural indicate a no-build zone (akin to Brood War's).

Primal Heart is probably my favorite rush map

Eldeyja and Cybernetic Peaks are probably some of the best looking maps I've seen ever, holy shit those are awesome.

I changed my mind last minute and decided to not submit BananaBerry but to submit All NATural Minerals instead, despite breaking the rules against modifying mineral field values from Blizzard's "standard" layout. So, if you think it's a stupid rule please make sure to say so loudly:

All NATural Minerals - (130 x 128 [medium], Main Ramp Rush Distance: 35s [standard])

LotV maps mine out super fast, accelerating the number of bases taken. This map's natural base does not have LotV's reduced mineral fields. All natural mineral fields are set to the higher value (1800). Natural geysers have been increased to 3000 each to maintain standard mineral:gas ratio.
