Week #71 of the ESL Open Cups brought about a second win for Cure in the Korean edition, while Europe fell back into the hands of Clem after a one week long interlude. The proceedings ended with PartinG achieving his first success in the American ESL Open Cup after weeks of absence from the top four.
After three weeks with three different Zerg champions, Cure returned to the top of the Korean ESL Open Cup and secured his second triumph in the weekly tournament. The Terran started on the easiest path of the bracket, meeting Creator as the first notable opponent in the semi-finals and vanquishing the Protoss, who had taken out Solar easily by a 3-0 scoreline. The other side of the bracket looked much more dangerous: defending champion DongRaeGu defeated recent military returner Leenock, and was in turn defeated by PartinG in the semifinals. PartinG couldn't overcome the might of Cure in the finals, and had to settle for his fourth silver medal of the season. Fans interested in Leenocktopus' comeback should be encouraged by his performance in the cup, where he managed to beat Armani and take a map off DRG—not too bad a start for the returning veteran.
A short interregnum by ShoWTimE could merely disrupt the status quo, but not overturn it: Clem reclaimed his throne in the European edition of the ESL Open Cup on Monday, defeating young MaxPax, fellow Liquid player MaNa, and his old ESL weekly rival HeRoMaRinE to lay the foundation of perhaps another long win streak. Big Gabe had played a perfect tournament until he ran into Clem in the finals, scoring cleans wins over goblin and Gerald. However, he was once again unable to conquer Clem in their second finals clash of the season. In other notable news, Lilbow finally put all that LotV practice to good use and made it into the quarterfinals of the competition, overcoming SKillous along the way, before being taken out by MaNa.
Monday's ESL Open Cup on the American server was quite stacked with faces from all over the globe showing themselves interested in winning some EPT Points and prize money. Eventual victor of the tournament PartinG started out on the bottom of the bracket, once again defeating DRG and denying him revenge for the loss in the Korean edition. The Zerg by this point had already taken out a dangerous foe in MaxPax. PartinG went on to eliminate SpeCial in a very close semi-finals clash, with the Terran once again showing his very good form by bringing the series to the deciding game. On the upper side of the tournament tree Zoun put together a very strong run, going through Gerald, Zest and Solar to reach the finals, avenging his team mate Astrea, who had fallen to the Korean Zerg, with an impressive 3-0 score. PartinG fared better in the PvP finals than in the PvT finals of the previous day, losing Oxide this time, but securing all the other maps to mark his first victory of the season.
ESL Open Cup winners earn $200 in prize money and 10 ESL Pro Tour points. Players who finish second earn 5 ESL Pro Tour points and $100. A top 4 finish guarantees at least $50. Edition #72 of the ESL Open Cups will take place on the 23rd (Korea) and the 24th of May (Europe and America).
