Monday was a great day for Zest fans, as the Protoss player was able to claim victory in both the Korean and American ESL Open Cup editions, adding two gold medals to his collection at the same time. In Europe, a leadership change saw Team Liquid's Clem take over the position as top dog.
Prior to this week's win, Zest's last triumph in the ESL Open Cup Korea happened way back in Cup series #22 in June. Zest advanced through a foreigner-heavy bracket back then—this time he had to defeat Patience and the previous week's victor Stats in the lead up to the finals. There, Rogue lay in wait, having reached the finals two weeks in a row—only this week, he was representing a new team in Dragon Phoenix Gaming. Unfortunately for Rogue, he was forced to taste silver two weeks in a row, as the Raise Your Edge Gaming Protoss kept his cool and closed the series out for his sixth gold medal in the Korean edition.
Three different victors in three consecutive weeks—that's not something we often see in the European edition of the ESL Open Cup. This time, Clem was able to come out on top of the rumble, defeating his eternal rival HeRoMaRinE in a direct duel for the title with a dominant 3-0 scoreline. The Frenchman was not as solid throughout the entirety of the bracket, however, dropping a map to British Protoss OpTiMiStC early on and then having a very tough battle with a reinvigorated Elazer in the semis, only narrowly escaping defeat. Contrasting this, Big Gabe's run into the finals was much smoother, Clem's team mate uThermal being the German's hardest road block to overcome. Overall, this was probably one of the least surprising editions of the tournament, as we saw no big breakout performance or upset. Clem claims his seventh gold medal in the competition, once more overtaking Reynor in the medal count.
More interesting was again the American edition of the ESL Open Cup, where Zest had to contend with a varied field of competitors to achieve victory. The RYE Protoss struggled a bit against Vanya and was taken to a five game series by Liquid's MaNa in the semifinals. It was a discouraging result for MaNa, who once again fell short of the finals by a single map, despite a solid run where he beat uThermal and Creator. The other side of the bracket developed into a second edition of the Korean tournament, with PartinG, Zoun, Armani and recently crowned ASUS ROG champion ByuN battling for the spot in the ultimate match. In the end, Armani did what the best foreign Zergs could not and eliminated ByuN, while newly teamless PartinG defeated Zoun from Alpha X and subsequently triumphed over Armani after a tough match. In the finals, Zest showed no mercy and denied PartinG a shot at catching up to Solar's gold medal count, instead securing his first very own American gold medal.
