2019 WCS Spring

The final eight title contenders for WCS Spring have been decided after two days of competition, with WCS Winter champions Neeb and Reynor joining 2018 Global Champion Serral in a stacked quarterfinal bracket. The third and final day of WCS Spring matches will begin on Sunday, May 19 11:00am GMT (GMT+00:00), with the remaining eight players contending for the first place prize of $20,000 and a direct seed to the 2019 Global Finals.

ro16 went pretty much as expected results wise, except for Goblin's victory.

Perfect balance. Believe it or not sc2 is in a great spot right now.

Found the Protoss.

That being said, this tournament is looking pretty good. If only the same could be said for GSL.

I really wish there was a possibility of getting both Serral vs Special and Serral vs Neeb :/ sad the bracket worked out this way. Hopefully one of those is the final.

Great tournament, great games. Particularly impressed with the quality of the TvP games atm, lot of back and forth, some different strategies too. It's not often we get really good macro TvP games, let alone multiple in a series.

Pretty sick Ro8 with a bunch of top dogs and a couple unexpected surprises

Agreed. PvT may be slightly favored for protoss but nothing crazy. The real problem is the way it plays out terran does too many 2 base all ins, need to weaken the all ins a little and buff the terran macro play a little. Nothing drastic, just enough to get terran going in the later game and less all inning.

However, terrans are still winning that matchup plenty as shown by the only 54% PvT winrate for protoss on Aligulac in high level play. All other matchups are undoubtedly very well balanced. ZvZ just needs something to spice it up and not be so many stale roach vs roach games.

The balance of the game this year overall has been good. Some well placed tuneups and it could be great.

Very good looking results by race in this tournament (and many previous tournaments) and solid distribution of tournament winners by race in premier tournaments so far this year, 2 terran 2 zerg 2 protoss.

If Showtime plays like he did today when he has to face Special, I don't think he'll get his chance to fuck things up.

I like all of them, to be honest.
I would love for Serral to win again in 2019 but I'd be glad if Special or Reynor takes the tournament, as well; Neeb and TIME are probably the ones I'd like to see win WCS the least but I'd be ok with them winning, the players I don't like are already out.

I dislike SpeCial as a person for repeatedly using retard as a pejorative in Twitch chat after the IEM PyeongChang qualifier fiasco last year.

I dislike Serral because he's boring and his fans are annoying.

Shots fired.

Though Serral fans in 2019 are much less obnoxious than last year.

Fun fact: this is the first time that WCS has had a top eight with every single player representing a different country.

(Too bad Scarlett couldn’t compete...)

His play is boring. I don't listen to interviews even of players I like, so I have literally no basis by which to judge his personality.

I'm not a Serral fan (although I have a lot of respect for his professionalism and skill) but I think Serral produces more entertaining series than anyone else, maybe besides Dark.

I hear it here first.
Serral's personality is much more likely to appear boring than his actual play.

yeah Serral vs Stats at GSL vs the world, Serral vs Reynor at Montreal, Serral vs soO are probably some of the most entertaining series that I have watched. Serral vs Rogue at Blizzcon, Serral vs Innovation at HSC and WESG were pretty good too.

The only consistently watchable Zerg matchup is ZvT (and even that hasn't been particularly good for years) and Serral almost never plays Terran players even remotely at his skill level. It doesn't help that ZvT is horrid when there is a skill gap in favor of the Zerg as it feels like every game is 10 minutes of defensive macro play with the Terran player having literally no chance while a lesser Zerg or Protoss player can at least bring out interesting strategies.

I don't deny Serral has a ton of one sided series but he has many good ones too so I don't think it's fair to call him boring. I agree with you that the meta is a lot less entertaining than 2017 or 2018. The nydus made ZvT a lot more boring and it looks like almost half of TvPs and PvZs involve an allin/strong timing attack.

Looking forward to another Serral victory.

A very strong ro8 though. Reynor, Neeb and Showtime have all shown that they're world class calibre players as well as Serral.

Don't forget Serral vs Bunny from HSC, some fantastic matches!

I think special's tvp has been good lately and his mech stuff will confuse them.

We couldnt have asked for a better top8. Everyone of the real contenders made it, and then there is a new face, goblin, to make it interesting. The bracket draw ended up cool as well

Bring on the Neeb vs Serral epic battle

Showtime's ready to fuck that up again xD

I want to see Neeb vs Special and Serral vs Reynor for the Ro4. Let the TL people have a win and have a real clash for the title of best of the circuit. And we have the kings of NA vs the kings of EU

It's hard. I want Special to break his Ro4 curse, but I also want the Neeb vs Serral clash. Neeb needs to take back his crown after his disappointing 2018 in circuit events. Serral didn't need to dethrone Neeb. Neeb just kinda abdicated his throne.

This WCS has been the best tournament of the year by far. The quality of the games has been great (my only caveat would be too many nydus, it's still probably a bit too strong), casting has been excellent thanks to a great caster lineup, and the balance has been good. 6 terrans in the ro16 is more than I can remember in recent times.

The fact that there have been few upsets is also a testament to the balanced state of the game right now. All those who advanced to the ro8 deserved to.

I'm rooting for a Special vs Serral final, but I think we might get a PvP and a ZvZ semifinal, hoping I'm wrong though. Let's go Juanito!

I think that no one casted a single series of Special for 2 fays, which is disgrace. I would like to be wrong but I watched most of games on all streams and havent saw one with probably best foreign terran.

Yea, I'm just so sorry we have these great matches and it's impossible to see them. Maybe we have a replay pack after the event?

But there were like 10ish active streams. They could stream his games aswell. Really can't see the point of having all those casting same matches, even in same language. I hope for replay pack too!
