It s uncanny at this point, Soo beat Inno in the earlier rounds, got one game up in the finals and still managed to not win the title vs Innovation.

He didn't beat Inno in the earlier rounds, Inno lost to Snute, PartinG and Solar.

that s right, I remembered incorrectly, i was thinking of the Solar series

It's funny because it's not even like INno is soO's "cryptonite" per-se, but since they have both reached grand finals enough times and soO's finals performance is what it is, the results are sort of written in stone at this point.

HSC is such a great thing and such a key part of the current SC2 landscape. I am really glad it continues to live on!

Moreover for me HSC XVII was the best one ever. The format is just superior to the classic one; even the casters and Take liked it, so I hope it's gonna stay like that. I also love how the show has found kind of a balance between absolutely wonky a somewhat serious, we get a lot of fun moments while keeping the casting on a comprehensible level and production going (barring technical issues, which we however should be tolerant about, given how difficult it is to keep such a complex show working). Great to still have Incontrol there, fantastic to see MrBitter after all those years and super cool to see new faces stepping up to the couch - Optimus and Eonblu were just fantastic, especially Eonblue and Incontrol have perfect caster chemistry

A really big draw of HSC to me is that there is a lot of foreigner-korean games. It's almost ironic that we have reached a point where a drunken meme tourney is the only source of that, but that is the sad state of the WCS system unfortunatelly and so much thanks for Take for stepping in at this time of need!

Until he doesn't fix the common mistakes hes doing all the time, he won't win anything.

It's really not a grand mystery.

Even if you remove the 3 finals, it leaves soO with 7-14 series winrate vs INnoVation.
In fact, soO's worst matchup in all of Starcraft 2 is INnoVation, with -35 map score.

SoO starts all the tournaments looking as the perfect Zerg, but near the final he starts to block and can't deal with the harass :-(

That was one of the really great HSC. Interesting to me is, how in a normal tournament the group stages can be kinda forgettable and you tune in for the finals where casters give it their all. In HSC, with the after-show party the night before the finals, the 3 days leading up to the finals are kinda the most fun thing ever, and on the last day, viewers/players and casters seem just so exhausted and hangover that the quality of the tourney just reaches it's low point where every other tourney has it's high point. Must be strange if you just turn in to check out the finals :D

I would imagine it has to do with prize pool. What's odd is there were some tournaments back in WoL with significantly smaller prize pools that were considered premier. e.g. 2011 MLG Global Invitational with its $4,000 prize pool.

Makes sense.

Or rather, it still doesn't make sense, but at least now I understand why it doesn't make sense. You'd think the players in attendance would matter more than prizepools, or else we'd all be hailing WESG as one of the toughest tournaments in the world.

With the environment of HSC being what it is, I'd personally classify them all as Major. The whole point is that it's a fun tourney, not a super-serious competition. Like Incontrol said, openly discussing dildos is not really a thing in WCS.

According to liquipedia - Premier Tournaments offer an outstanding prize pool, are frequently played out offline, and feature the best players from all over the world. They are commonly held by well-established franchises and are considered especially prestigious amongst the community.

Personally don't think HSC counts for most of that. But then again SSL challenge and Cross finals do apparently.

On another note, I do think WeSG as a competition is underrated. People seem to disregard it completely in terms of TY/Maru's achievements.

Regular offline - check
Best players around the world - check (moreso than WCS)
Well established franchise - check
Especially prestigious - probably not

So you have 3+ vs 1- aside from money which really just is a stupid measurement for how great a tournament is. HSC doesnt have 32 top tier players but generally a very high quality nonetheless. If you consider Trap, Stats, Leenock, aLive, Serral, ShoWTimE, Special,Neeb, Scarlett... all didnt want to or couldnt make it. Thats crazy.

I think the prize pool is directly connected to pro player attendance. I doubt the Jin Air players or Serral would turn their invitations down of the prize pool was a million dollars.

On the other hand you can say those are just two more good players so yes it raises the skill ceiling but it doesnt change the fact that the tournament already has very high level players

In addition I want to mention that Maru generally doesnt like to leave Korea for example. I would love to see him at HSC since he is #1 Terran but I don't believe he would be a good fit. Regardless of that I would invite him to our tournaments. If I imagine we can run a HSC with 50-100k prizepool and he would suddenly want to come I am very honest to say that I wouldn't be interested to invite him purely on the fact that I feel if this is just about money and not being part of HSC I rather have the #2 Terran that can still enjoy the event, play some DDR etc. ;-)

I bet you like 10 pushups or something (because gambling with money isn't right, of course) it ended up being a scheduling issue for the pros. Great work as always, hope they show up for HSC18!

Getting an observer like MapuTv helped the HSC casting so much.

Really this was one of the best HSC, from TaKe casting in english and german on the german stream to the observing and main stream casting to the format and the party, but not too much party atmosphere.

Well done TaKeTv!
