INnoVation and soO survive 'Group of Death' in Code S

Code S' group of death, one of the most stacked groups in the competition's history, was played out on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, but still impressively, (T)INnoVation confirmed his status as the current best player in the world by advancing out of the group in first place. (Z)soO gave him little trouble, as a simple hellbat push bopped the Zerg in their first game and a strong midgame timing on Newkirk sealed the series.

(P)Classic, who had convincingly beaten (Z)Dark 2-0, gave him a better run for his money, almost breaking him on Cactus Valley with a powerful 2/2 timing attack that was only barely held. Classic struck back with the currently popular 7gate adept all-in to tie up the series, but INnoVation clinched his spot on Daybreak with a tank push.

(Z)soO, who looked outdone in his first series, came back impressively to take second place in the group. Once again he proved the better ZvZer in his series against Dark, with both games revolving around sharp roach timings. Classic again put up a strong fight, taking the first game with a big three base timing attack on Whirlwind. soO however strung together one important hold after another against Classic's very pressure-oriented playstyle and eventually managed to break through the Protoss defenses on Echo. Their deciding match on Cactus Valley was decided by soO's teching to lurkers and destroying Classic's economy, then holding on against a last ditch all-in.

That last series was one of the best in a while. Honestly all of Classic's matches were excellent to watch.

Classic looked awesome, really well prepared but execution let him down a bit in the series against INnoVation and soO. Still would have warranted a top 8 spot against almost any other opposition ;(

Classic's games were so sick. But alas, it was not meant to be.
I really thought he had Innovation on Cactus Valley. But Inno's macro was just too good. Classic couldn't even break the entrance.

All in all, insane games today. This season is shaping up to be amazing.

I just wanna point out that soO scouting classic attempting to take a hidden expo really sealed the deal. Classic probably stays in the game had that not been scouted, And i can only guess that soO knew to do that so quickly because they were team mates for so long and classic probably tends to take hidden expos when he gets behind. Well done.

Classic was really impressive, sad we won't see him in the quarterfinals. But I had a blast watching the games - the FreecUp Studio was fired up today.

According to soO's interview, the SKT coaching staff had emphasized scouting for hidden bases - apparently it's a habit drilled into him from the SKT days.

Classic was really good, but lacked in getting more splash. Too focused on winning soon.
Dark showed the experimental play that he has been using on his stream. It's either too greedy or sub-optimal. I think Dark needs more help with fine-tuning his play.
soO, on the other hand, played as expected. He isn't the best at the game, but he sure can adapt tactics and strategy in order to win.

Classic beat him down hard. First game he faked an immortal all-in and took a third, then went with a delayed version. Second game he hit a three base timing with archons, sentries, immortals and huge adept numbers. His forcefields were perfect and he split his units really well against banelings. Just really great by Classic.

Wow, Dark just looked completely hopeless and it didn't have jack shit to do with balance. Suboptimal unit comps, arrogantly greedy expansions, Ultras with 1/0 + adrenal at 9 minutes? Idk, he's the pro and I'm not but he just looked like he wasn't playing all that well vs Protoss.

I felt like classic getting knocked out was one of the toughest outs I've seen in a while. You completely school dark 2-0, then lose a tough 1-2 to innovation (no shame there) and lose 1-2 to soO (also no shame). He made some mistakes but yeah, didn't play badly at all. Tough one but that's code S I guess

Cactus Valley reminds me of Frost which is a huge map and I died to hidden bases on that map like a thousand times. verecunda said above that this is soO's habit on big map so that makes sense. Also, he might do that so scout for hidden pylon that is used to warp in to harass while he moved out. Well-done indeed. I'm happy that soO advanced!

Woops edited to correct I mixed the SoO and Inno game up with Dark haha

I don't think anyone really doubts soO's ability to win games against TY. But winning a best of 5 is an entirely different challenge.

Also for research purposes, do you remember when that was?

I was wondering when he took it why he took it there. Why not just take it at the southwest main instead of in the bottom middle like that? It wouldn't have been spotted.

Very sad for Classic. I think almost everybody agree that he really showed some special PvZ tricks and nice ideas yesterday. I really don't think soO has the energy and the top form of his best period in order to beat TY. Also he is a classical ZvPand ZvZ player, I don't remember any successful games against top terrans.

Looks like a TvT final with TY and Bogus, but we shall see. After Ro16, every player becomes different with different preparations and approach. I really hope for TY to get his first GSL title.

don't know what's creepy about finding girls from a certain ethnicity particularly attractive. it's normal.

Not creepy so much as misguided. Koreans are people like everyone else. Imagining people on the other side of the world from you as fundamentally different just because they are exotic/fascinating to you is just (mostly) harmless dreaming.

Yes, racist obsession of white Americans.

I wonder what happened to KwarK...

But it's mostly born of ignorance. Isn't that something that should evoke pity instead of disgust?

im sure its reasonable to be disgusted by the fetishization of foreign cultures

scholars would say its our duty to be disgusted by it, others would just say gyuri is hot and leave it at that. i dont typically pity a guy who knows whta he likes, but the world is full of beautiful , interesting women so ultimately hes just doin himself dirty. if he was in KR he might fetishize US girls which is very common with my friends in mexico. enjoying ur posts pvsnp

Although in general people tend to seek genetically similar (but not too similar) mates, there is research showing that some people have a genetic inclination to seek people who are sufficiently different from themselves to guarantee a lack of overlap in MHCs (major histocompatibility complexes) and that is just the tip of the iceberg. "Opposites attract," white guy vs. Asian girl, can have a genetic component to it. In layman terms, this makes sense because pursuing genetic diversity in mate and therefore offspring greatly decreases the chance for many recessive traits to become pronounced.

I'm not denying that weebs and foreign k-pop fans might have an unhealthy obsession with another culture/race, just that science justifies it for certain cases. Just as people can be born gay, others can be born pre-programmed to seek an abnormal drive to seek genetic diversity in mates.

Seriously guys there are plenty of places to shame someone for who/what they are attracted to, but not here.

These were the sickest matches I have seen in a while and they deserve to be discussed! I recall Arty saying he had never seen the build Classic started out on against Dark, so even though Dark scouted it he still lost. Can anyone talk about how that strategy worked and was different? Like what Dark was expecting when he scouted?

Would you allow it if we talked about how attracted we are to Korean SC2 players?

the early robotics classic used is really just uncommon. and his push was extremely delayed (Newkirk city) compared to the typical builds that use robotics. they usually do not have a third base so early, and they usually dont wait for like 4-5 immortals to push

i think when dark scouted his units/production he thought "fuck hes about to immortal push me, because i scouted this build hes doing, and thats what people typically do when you discover they have been chronoing immortals all early game instead of upgrading and buying splash/air units"

what clasic was thinking, "dark is going to get overlord speed and see this push and over prepare while i take my third. he will assume i am going to push immediately, because when this is scouted it can be countered by spire or x strategy. i will just wait for archon tech and go kill him, becuase he knows that i know that there is an expiration date on this strategy, and because i know that that he knows that i know that there is an expiration date on this strategy, i will make an educated bet and predict that he will make units and not a spire, fearing the immediate push and as a result, ultimately die to just "more" of the same stuff ive been making all game"

thats as best i can describe it, and spire might not be the best choice. but if dark played that game again, he would have tried to counter it much differently me thinks

ro32 and ro16 have had an immense amount of metagaming in them, really weird builds from all the races tbh

Classic got so close. Using the voidray to take the queen agro while his oracles killed drones was super impressive. He jumped the gun and went allin on cactus valley instead of transitioning into templar tech, and that is why he lost.

Classic's playstyle is to predictable if you see his reaplys. He plays only allin or harras in to all in. Ro of 16 and we have 1 zerg. I dont think leenock can make it. SKy toss is way to strong in late game. and if toss start playing defensiv with hightempler i dont see how zerg can win. The only way zerg can win vs toss is all in and i dont like it.

If Leenock was in group A or B, he would be totally dead. But his group is not that hard, he definitely can make it out.

Hard not to feel sorry for Classic

The guy consistently shows solid play, but keeps getting bopped out by his team mates like Dark and Soo. With proleague being no more and SKT disbanded, he won't get any more chances to play.

he's playing in a lot of online tournament recently. Also he won GSL and SSL which are dreams of many people, included Dark and Soo. Obviously you dont have to feel sorry for him.

I only root for soo. This consistent zerg must finally be able to grab the trophy he deserves like no other.
You don't choose to play zerg. The zerg choose you.
