After failing to qualify for GSL and SSL, MarineKing has decided to retire from StarCraft 2.

Choya's tweet says..

"MarineKing has retired from StarCraft 2 starting today. During this time he worked really hard and was a friend who overcame a lot of challenges. I talked with him a lot yesterday but he wants to find a new road. He doesn't really know what he wants to do yet but please cheer for him."

End of an era.

Rip. Sucks he couldn't make much of a comeback after the matchfixing rumors and investigation(?) but no one can deny his legacy in the game.

I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

All great things end it seems. Fair well MKP/Foxer/Marineking, he'll always be the player who made me interested in this game. MKP v Kyrix, never forget.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Hadn't been good since he came back from his LoL excursion really. Glad he at least had that one good run at KeSPA cup (or was it hot6?)after he came back.

Good luck with whatever you do MarineKing! But please don't become a coach. :/

Those foreign players and coaches destroying the korean scene

Anyway given how bad he was since mid/late HotS he should've retired earlier before he forgot to do things like check the minimap and stuff...

Still remember when he used the ID BoxeR and casters had to point out this wasn't the real BoxeR, despite the skills he was displaying in the game.
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

wonder what would have happened if the Marineking - byul match didn't happen.
before that match it seemed like he is back in form, got to hot6ix cup finals and qualified for both starleagues...
After that match he just disappeared.

Goodbye Foxer, your splits and throws will be truly missed . I will never forget how hard you wanted to be the first to win GSL so you could change your ID to OptimusPrime... but even then you lost to Polt. Your emotion and dedication to this game was unparalleled. End of a great era indeed.

The ending to MKP is so disappointing. MKP was so loved reddit funded his journey to MLG. Then one game that was suspicious turned everyone against him. People still talk better about life, who was actually caught match fixing. MKP was and still is an amazing guy and I hope the best for him.

Not too surprised given his lack of results and him going CC first into Rax into CC with no scout. Also this is his second time retiring. Guess he'll go try and play something else?

Good luck either way.

I won't forget this moment when he qualified for Auction OSL

It seemed like yesterday when you started tearing up after qualifying for OSL and allowed moletrap and I to do an interview on the spot. Genuinely a nice guy, sad to see you go. Good luck on your future endeavors.

Starts a comback. Second place in the Hot6 cup, actually looking decent, not amazing, but at least A-team material. Has a shitty game, community turns on him, and it all went downhill from there. I don't think so, I can read the writing in front of me.

Hot6 cup run was late 2014. He then went 3-13 in SPL next year before the Byul match.

He wasn't coming back, he was done regardless.

Watching mkp vs kyrix was one of my first sc2 esports moments. I remember kyrix building a ton of banes. The casters were saying how mkp's pure marine comp could never beat that many banes but then the Zerg took a fight at his ramp and he displayed some of the first and best split micro in a telivised match. Splitting his marines like an absolute God he took engagement after engagement until he was on kyrixes creep and then on top of his hatchery. That game made me start playing Terran and revolutionized the tvz meta. It also lead to the name Marine King. Marine king was one of the best players to ever touch the game and he will be rembered as such. Good luck mkp I hope you split like a god in whatever you decide to do.

RIP

Remember how SangHo's career basically got destroyed in BW due to false matchfixing accusations? It appears we as a community never learn because we destroyed another innocent man's career too.

Ah i forgot he played a couple games after that, thought he gave up right away.

He was 3-10 after the loss to Byul.

I guess making SSL challenger and Code S is good, but he dropped out of both in RO32 then went on with his poor Proleague form. I really struggle to see how he was looking good by the time the Byul game happened.

It was fun to see him play at MLG Orlando in 2011, sitting on the edge of the small "feature" stage next to the tournament pit, being within literal arm's reach of him as he played in the brackets. MarineKing was full of passion for the game and for his fans. (He also had great hair.)
It has been awhile, and he had some issues (knowing now what we do about Gerrard, him leaving the team that he held together for so long makes a lot more sense) in recent years, but he still was a source of inspiration. He's managed to hold on and persevere in his chosen career for a long time despite many hardships. I wish him all the best as he moves forward.

Also, dammit NoRegret. It's not your fault, but you're going to get blamed you know.

This sucks. As an avid MarineKing fan, this really sucks. I was so excited when I heard he left LoL to come back to SC2. But unfortunately, after a nice Hot6 Cup finals run, he became super irrelevant... And then that stupid f*ing vs ByuL match happened and things just went to complete shit afterwards...
It really sucks. Everyone knows just how emotional MarineKing can get and how the littlest things in life can tilt him. The whole ByuL fiasco must have really just shot his mentality and motivation down completely...
Farewell MarineKing. Thank you for all the great memories. You will forever be the King of Marines...

This is the game from MKP that I'll chose to remember.
One of the most exciting moments in sc2, at least for me.

Thanks for the memories and awesome games, Marineking. I've watched you since your first games in GSL as Foxer with those wonky nuke rushes, and there have been so many awesome, entertaining matches since then. You may have moved on with your life, but your legend is cemented in the minds of every Starcraft 2 fan out there.

I have not been following the game for a long time but this guy was pretty much my favorite player back then.

It was nice to have been able to watch him play during his prime (even getting to shake his hand and tell him I was a huge fan after I got him to sign the box of my copy of WoL).

Hope for the best for him.

You think so? I thought it was the fact that he's been largely irrelevant for a long time now, and has been playing other games.

He wasn't 3-13 before the byul match the 3-13 record was for the entire year.
Before the byul match he was like 3-4 or so and after that match his losing streak started. Also he qualified for both starleagues.

He was 3-9 before that game for 2015 season. His 2014 record was 10-13. His form dropped when he switched teams.

Well I had considered him retired for a while, he's been on MVP but didn't show up for PL at all. Even if he kept playing sc2, if the coaches have that low trust in him then he probably can't be very good.

At least its an offical end to a legendary career, too bad his return to sc2 didn't rock the world harder, would have been fun if he had.

I feel like the last 3 years of MKP lackluster career could have been much more fruitful had he just not gone 3CC no scout in 90% of his games. At least he managed one last miracle run in the hot6 cup.

Apart from his splits he´ll also be remembered for some of the best casting at HSC VI,
together with MC and possibly Reis - even by Homestory standards this was one of the most hillarious
casts - and I use the term lightly, it was more of a comedyshow - ever.
I remember them casting a match with a Zerg involved and nearly died lauging.
Old HSC VODS are not easy to find, maybe someone has got a link at hand?

Anyway, like some many said before: End of an era. Sad to see his legacy tarnished by accusations and bad results these last months and years.

He was my favorite player until his pupil outclassed him, his rivalry with DRG is still the best sc2 as ever seen, MLG never forget...
had the chance to meet him during Ironsquid's autograph session, he couldn't believe he had so much fans, but his fame was deserved.

Damn, that's sad but not too surprising. I really loved watching MKP's games back when he was in his prime (har har). His legacy lives on in Maru and Byun right now, incredibly. I'd say he'll be missed, but I've missed him for a long time already. He was one of the first players for me that showed that SC2 had the potential to become as refined and exciting to watch as BW (another being Cliiiiiiide).

Sad that the whole match vs Byul ever happened. Whenever I see MKP, that is the first thing I remember about him. Wish that hadn't tainted all the great memories he has left us with. He has been rather irrelevant for a while, but I'll still miss the excitement and occasional craziness he brought. GL MKP.

I guess this is kind of a disappointing ending to a truly interesting player, it was very hard not to like a guy that had the balls to call himself "Foxer" back in the day, gg!

Hope he finds something he loves as much as he seemed to love SC2 in his next endeavors.

I've always wondered how MKP would have done in a KeSPA team setting when he's mentally and emotionally stable. I feel like he could have and would have won a GSL or SSL.

Alas, another "what if" that leaves you yearning for more. Hope for the best for MKP.

Fingers crossed Creator makes a run through GSL and doesn't retire. I wouldn't be able to handle 2 ex-Prime players and my favorite Protoss retiring within the same year

It's so sad thinking about all the memories StarCraft 2 gave me before I quit a bit over a year ago, and then seeing how so many of the 'legends' are leaving or have already left. I really miss the old days! I remember always watching the MKP compilations and how motivational they felt! Goodluck to MKP with whatever he does next!

I still remember him losing to nestea in the finals and him joining the kong. Good old times.

Wow...this is so sudden! I cant believe that this is even real...usually when most players retire (especially high profile like MK) theres long sad posts about their retirement. I really hate to see him go :'(. So many good games and memories. I was really hoping to see a comeback...
I'm terranfying

Never forget MKP (then Boxer) vs Fruitdealer GSL season 2!

King of 2 rax marines and the reason for supply depot before rax by Blizzard.

Good night silver prince! Only Polt left out of my favourites (Mvp,MMA,MKP and Flash gone).

MarineKing vs Kyrix and the marine splits was what got me into watching professional starcraft to begin with. I was in awe at the time and became a fan instantly. Those days were so fun!
Super frustratingly stubborn player but it was always fun to watch him play, and I always had a soft spot for him even after he started to fall off.

Oh no, this gosu was responsible for so many great moments, both in the game as well as between games.

I hope with every fiber of my being that he will reconsider. Marineking holds a special place in my heart. Sc2 was my first e-sports and Foxer was my favorite pro. Before that, I didn't even know what "e-sports" was. I played rts for 7 years just for bragging rights. Then I saw this kid come onto the stage with the sickest micro WOL had seen to date and the flashy style in real life to back it up. Anyone remember the Marineking popped collar or white "fake" shades? Hahaha, really the full package of a player. I remember walking to the Library when I had no PC eagerly waiting to watch the GSL vods of his games.

He inspired me to want to play sc2 full time. I saw this tiny, young, skinny, kid with his name being chanted as he came out of his booth at MLG, and I thought, isn't that something? Anyone can be an e-sports athlete. Since then I realized that starcraft players aren't exactly e-sports celebs in Korea. I don't think this lie helps anyone.

Good night sweet Prince. Awaiting the comeback...only 22.

Farewell MKP! Always cheered for you, loved your style and stubborn ignorance of the meta. Sad how it ends...

Goodbye MarineKing. Sadly never got to see you live during your peak, but your micro and splits will always be remembered. Despite the sad ending amidst controversy, there is no denying that every single time you were in the booth, it was absolutely riveting and impossible to look away.
