Hey everybody,
(please excuse wrong grammar and wording, it is sunday and I just came back from DH)
2014 has been a good year for XMG in General in terms of eSports, certain parts better than others. Before getting into SC2 specifically, I'd like to say that we have always been big fans of TeamLiquid and the unique atmosphere this community provides makes it a very special place, as certain aspects that are quite "annoying" in the industry do not apply here, which is why I always like to take the time to speak about our Starcraft II developments.
That being said, there will be some changes to our involvement into Starcraft in 2015 and I would like to explain what is going to happen and why.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SC2 with XMG in 2014.
In the beginning of 2014 we did add two players to compensate for XMG.XlorD and XMG.monchi, as they both decided to study and we were already aware that XMG.SaltTheWound planned to do the same. After weeks of scouting we finally decided to add the german legend Socke and the complete unknown Lilbow into our ranks, making us a full team :D - Ye I am playing too
The year has been going quite good as far as I am concerned, we could have done some more coverage and fanbased events and features, but overall I think we did a good job, specially until september, when we had to cancel most of our Youtube activity due to pressing matters on other ends (we will reincept Youtube 2015) and the constant drop of views on Starcraft II videos on our channel.
Long story short, let me explain you what will change and why:

ToD has been a great backup throughout 2014 and he will continue to be exactly that. He will play Starcraft II and LotV under XMG in 2015 and I am grateful and honoured to call him part of our team since 2013 now. He has done a lot for our brand, be it playing, casting, visiting Meltdown Bars or even incepting his own tournaments, like the XMG Balance Test Map Tour.

Socke has been a most welcomed addition to our squad. He is a very cool and super, epic, sometimes tooooo calm guy, that never gets nervous or angry (def does not show it) He had some good results in 2014, with german EPS still pending (semifinals) and we had a wonderful year together. He is uncertain what his SC2 career in 2015 will be like, so we keep him options open, but he might leave our team in 2015. Nothing is decided yet though And he sure knows how to party.
He sure was a bit lazy on content, which is hopefully will be changed in 2015, right Giaco?
We do not have plans, however, to keep him as a full time SC2 player for now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HomeStoryCup:
Well nothing really new here. HSC is one of our most successful events since 10 editions and we are hyped for every new tournament, as it always is something special for me and the whole of XMG. But as always, HomeStoryCup is up for discussion in our marketing and as for the 9 HSC events before, I can't guarantee anything right now But even if XMG every drops from HSC, due to reason unknown, it will always stay the most enjoyable SC2 event in the scene, that I am sure of

things that do not stay:
XMG.Lilbow:
Pics:
+ Show Spoiler +
Lilbow has been wonderful, getting good results and being polite all the way. Always focussed on the game 100%, he had some very impressive online results, just lacking a bit offline experience, thus not performing on point at a few offline Events, but still impressed us all the way with adapting quick to the requirements we had and making it into the top ranks within europe.
As we do not plan on having a multi player Line Up for 2015, we have to set Lilbow free, but dont worry, he already found a new home and I am very confident he will perform even better in 2015.
Statement:
+ Show Spoiler +i've been in XMG for almost a year, i evolved a lot as a player and as a person during my time in the team but everything come to an end and i think it's time for me to growth even more, i'm very thankfull to XMG for supporting me and to all my ex-teammates : tod socke and saltthewound and to my manager. i hope you guys will keep cheering for me and you will get new informations about my new team very soon Thx also to TaKe for inviting me to HSC, I will do better next time, if I get the chance
All the best to our youngling David!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
things that will come:
We will add another SC2 personality into our ranks with a sponsorship in 2015, as we followed and befriended this person for a while now, this character is more than welcome and capable of representing XMG in 2015.
We sadly wont have new players coming in 2015, as SC2 has got harder to justify within the company (for understandable reasons), but the passion still remains in a lot of ways and we will continue to support the game to the best of our abilities. However Dota2 and a few other engagement have proven really effective, so I have yet to find a smart way to implement SC2 in the same way
thx for reading and cu soon

Pretty awesome that pretty much only having to let Lilbow go is the only bad news!

Nice and insane workout by Maddelisk

enjoy the transparency and I'm glad that you're staying in SC2. hopefully after LotV you'll invest more into us :D

In the Socke part it first says that he "might" leave the team, and then that "We do not have plans, however, to keep him as a full time SC2 player for now.". What does this mean? That Socke will be playing part-time if he stays with XMG? Or am I misunderstanding something? Thanks for the update though, I'm pretty happy to see that XMG is still standing strong (: (I had no idea Apollo was sponsored by XMG though)

As both Socke and we are uncertain, the plans right now are undefined - that is what it means

Thought these guys were already gone.

What tantrums? That one recent time when Kas made the inappropriate comment and things got solved in like two seconds and everyone moved on with their lives? Relax with the vagina accusation... some players are added to rosters for viewerships or personalities or bringing some other unique quality to a team; it's simply not the case that every player's value is defined by being an emotionless GM player.
Anyways, best of luck to XMG, Apollo, ToD, Maddelisk, etc. in the future!
|
lilbow has a very bright future in esports
|
So XMG is going the CM Storm route - not a team, but a series of individual sponsorships. I can respect that, particularly since you're being direct about it. Hopefully Socke decides there's still a future for him with the organization as well.

Too cool

I wouldn't really call it disappointment, but I'd be sad for sure. Whenever i think of homestory cup the first thing that comes to my mind is XMG and Take's interview/conversation with them :D
Really cool transparency from you guys, good job Lets hope with the release and Hype of LOTV there will be more opportunities for you guys to work profitably with our scene.

This, this article I like, explaining why you are doing stuff, what's planned and so on. I am so down with that attitude. Really, 10/10 to you. I really hope that 2015 turns into a bumper, good luck to all involved.7

interesting choice of personal sponsorship, but I guess every sponsor has its own policy (Nate should get sponsored as well ). HSC sponsorship is the best decision IMO

Hey,
The reasons are that the viewership is dropping massively compared to other eSport titles, which makes it hard for me to cross finance our projects external and internally. Also SC2 seems to be a harsher in terms of ROI for us, after all we need to sell 1-2 things in order to maintain our standards in eSport and justify our expenses. Mostly the whole and fall off in terms of social media range and overall CTR is a bit problematic. Call to action does not really work as well as in other titles and the overall interest decreased, yet to get involved into the scene is not that much cheaper.
Yet I am confident that if we do it right, it can still be a lot of fun and helpful to the company in the same time

The final expansion of SC2 is not even in beta now. The best days are yet to come. If someone supports the game early, he is not just one of many later.

That's a fair point, but they have not dropped SC2 entirely. They have moved away from players so that they can continue to support their community figures and events (like homestory cup). That's still a large investment from my point of view.

XMG probably can't afford to take that chance. Big businesses may sometimes be born the way you describe but so many more fail because they took too many risks that didn't pay off. Remember how NASL was millions in debt?

Seems to be a thing about any player, male or female, weather they play protoss, zerg or terran, to get exacerbated on occassion, as loosing when we think balance is the issue really pisses us all off.

I'm pretty sure being pro-"social justice" is being perceived as a good thing by most people. "SJW" really is the most idiotic slur I've ever encountered. Everytime someone "accuses" me of being a SJW, all I can do is go: "Yea, ok. And?"

While on the first look it appears questionable, if a Maddelisk workout video helps the scene, it should be clear that a vibrant scene depends on diversity. Interest in players drives esports.
Female players can also help to attract a female audience with the statement that video games are not just for boys.
It is easy to complain in a TL thread about SJW. It is not as easy to practice SC2 almost every day and earn a continuous personal sponsorship.

Yet I am confident that if we do it right, it can still be a lot of fun and helpful to the company in the same time If anyone only gets on the train which is already moving, one can only be one of many others. The finals expansion of SC2 is not even in beta now. The best days are yet to come. If someone supports the game early, he is not just one of many later. XMG probably can't afford to take that chance. Big businesses may sometimes be born the way you describe but so many more fail because they took too many risks that didn't pay off. Remember how NASL was millions in debt? That is not comparable I think. NASL held tournaments. XMG only sponsors players and events.
Looking at product advertising between matches, I often feel they are displaced. Almost no gamer is right now in need of a new headset, notebook, soundcard, computer or something. And the message of the commercials are questionable anyway, as if this XYZ brand now really has the product which gives you an advantage over your opponent (which would defy the spirit of esports anyway.)
But talking from a pure business's point of view: Asus or Red Bull now sponsor some events for long enough, that they appear as a part of it. While I consider the "RoG" brand by Asus marketing BS, it begins to appear credible. Do BenQ or Eizo really make better monitors for the money than other brands? I don't believe that. But they are visible in the scene.
I think, the Starcraft scene is unique. The passion required to play it online without quitting while in bronze. The willingness to accept losses. The devotion to watch tournaments live even if they are held at an inconvenient time.

Why not openly name these reasons if you are trying to be transparent here? The style of this short part seems a bit in contrast to the rest of the article, which makes it weird. Why has SC2 got harder to justify for you? I don't think everyone "understands" if you don't at all explain it. Hey, The reasons are that the viewership is dropping massively compared to other eSport titles, which makes it hard for me to cross finance our projects external and internally. Also SC2 seems to be a harsher in terms of ROI for us, after all we need to sell 1-2 things in order to maintain our standards in eSport and justify our expenses. Mostly the whole and fall off in terms of social media range and overall CTR is a bit problematic. Well to be fair if you look at the message of the commercials of regular sports brands (for sport shoes, equipment, etc) it is the same "this product will make you better" BS, so XMG's advertising makes sense to me.

I really dont like that hint of maybe not sponsoring HSC anymore. Makes me extremely nervous. Otherwise, XMG is pretty cool overall. I sure could use one of their Lappy`s.

I'm buing an XMG laptop for my girlfriend and then (if it is as awesome as it looks like from the specs/reviews) another for myself. All because of XMG supporting StarCraft. Thank you, people, for focusing on a smaller community (with higher percentage of successful people with money though Kappa). -- Cheers, jm

Its pretty much just marketing considering their plan.
