by lichter

When (Z)Jaedong won ASUS ROG Northcon on December 7th, 2013, it was supposed to be the completion of a cycle. His career had come full circle, and it was time for the Tyrant to reclaim his throne. He had spent 2013 cementing his legacy as the game's penultimate kong—his procession completed at that year's Blizzcon—, and his ascension appeared inevitable. Then, the calendar turned and he lost to ForGG in the Ro8 of his title defense. Then, he lost to eventual champion HerO at IEM Cologne. Then, Has happened. Regicide at the gates of his natural. His cycle was not to be completed.

His tale began in 2005, when he joined the team Plus before it became Lecaf OZ. He made his debut in SKY Proleague 2006 Round 1, and to the astonishment of many, it didn't take him long to make his mark. With a record of 51 wins and 27 losses, the new kid was the second best zerg in the league behind sAviOr, and he won Rookie of the Year for his feats. He built upon that introduction in Round 2 of SKY Proleague when he won the Most Wins award as well as MVP, cementing his place as OZ's primary talent. Unfortunately, he remained on the fringes of stardom throughout 2006; his team was not one of the traditional titan's of Brood War, and he played zerg in an era dominated by a single son of the swarm.

The rule of his predecessor would not last much longer however, as The Maestro experienced a significant slump the next year. The incumbent Jaedong took this opportunity with aplomb as he ended a brilliant year with his first title at EVER OSL 2007, while carrying his team to the only Proleague title in their history in Shinhan Bank Proleague Round 2 and in the Grand Finals. His dominance did not go unnoticed; in January of 2008, KeSPA named him the #1 Zerg, a title he'd hold on to for an incredible 43 months.

He wrote his legend in those three and a half years by becoming the greatest zerg in the game's history. He won six more championships during that time—GOMTV MSL 2008, GOMTV Classic S1 2008, Batoo OSL 2009, Bacchus OSL 2009, WCG 2009, and NATE MSL 2009—and earned countless individual achievements. He even became KeSPA's highest ever rated player at 3459.3 points, an 'objective' zenith in a sport of subtlety.

"Yes, slumps for me are rather infrequent. I believe it is the fruits of the hours of hard work I have accumulated for this game. If I practice hard, I have faith that one day it will show up in my results even if the effect is not instantaneous."

Who would have thought on that fateful night of the NATE MSL Finals against his eternal rival Flash that it was going to be Jaedong's last premier tournament title in Brood War? Everyone remembers the power outage, the excuses, the technology just isn't there yet, the regame and the outcome. It is one of the most enduring moments in our history, yet few associate it with Jaedong's decline—the beginning of the end for the Tyrant.

Yet like any great champion, he would fight, and he would lose. To his greatest rival, no less. He would lose to Flash in three consecutive finals, the last BW finals that Jaedong would ever reach again. At Hana Daetoo MSL, Bigfile MSL, and Korean Air OSL Season 2, he'd finish second best, a disappointment for a man so used to success. From the greatest zerg in the world, he became 2010's Kong.

"It's really been painful. In the past, I've been able to quickly put losses out of my mind, but this time has really been hard to forget. Now, it still occasionally crosses my mind, but I will continue practicing hard to rise again. If I had allowed myself to be overcome by defeat every time, the 'Tyrant' would never have existed. "

And it continued to get worse. 2011 was not his year as he'd fail to reach a single final. He was knocked out of each Ro4 he reached by two zergs, Hydra and ZerO, in a matchup where he was once unbeatable. His winrates in ZvP and ZvZ fell to ~50%. In August, his streak of zerg dominance ended when he fell behind those very same zergs in the KeSPA Rankings. Even his team was blighted by his recession: they failed to reach the playoffs in Shinhan Bank Proleague 2010-2011 before disbanding in November of that year. Too expensive for a star past his prime, he was forced to join a band of misfits on Team 8, a team primarily known for not being as bad as Air Force ACE. Finally, he had reached his nadir.

Then, on May 2nd, 2012, KeSPA announced it would begin its transition to Starcraft 2. They revealed that the next season of Proleague would feature both BW and SC2, and that they would cooperate with Blizzard and existing organizations in nurturing the young game's development. This was Jaedong's opportunity to reinvent himself and turn back time. There was no assurance that he'd flourish in the new game as much as the old, but The God of Destruction had a determination that manifested in a compulsion to be the best. It didn't matter how he was going to be reborn in this new world; he would take any lot he was cast and shape it in his likeness.

"After having played both games, I can see that there is no reason to assume that just because one player was very good in Brood War, he'd also be the best in SC2."

Unfortunately, he was not born into riches in this new life. While Team 8 surprised many by finishing the regular season in 3rd place, Jaedong only managed a 15-15 record (5-5 in BW, 10-10 in SC2). His team was shut out in the playoffs, losing 0-2, 0-2 to SKT T1 with Jaedong failing to win a game. His reputation preceded him, however, and he was donated a seed into Code S Season 4 2012. He made little of that charity; he lost 0-2 to MC and 1-2 to MarineKing to get knocked down to Code A immediately. The next season, Hack dropped him into the anonymous cesspool of Code B. His suffering from the end of Brood War endured.

A change was necessary, and he sprung to life in 2013 after signing with Evil Geniuses. EG presented him with a liberty that few KeSPA players had ever known—the freedom to travel and play in international tournaments—and it appeared to galvanize him. He attended his first foreign SC2 event in the largely forgotten HyperX 10 Year Anniversary tournament in Las Vegas, which he won against MC. He continued to travel throughout the year, attending Dreamhacks, MLGs, and IEMs. Everywhere he went, he was showered with applause and adoration for his reputation more than his play. Yet the success of his past life eluded him. He finished second in Dreamhack Summer, Dreamhack Valencia, WCS AM Season 2, the WCS Season 2 Finals, and Blizzcon. Once again, he had become the Kong.

Then, out of nowhere, as we all joked about Jaekong and his severed sheep, he won Northcon. As abruptly as he had announced his arrival, as reluctantly as he had fallen, he was a champion in SC2. He had come full circle: from Champion to Kong to Has-been in BW, then a Has-been to Kong, to Champion in SC2. The omens called for 2014 to be Jaedong's coronation. Instead, it was a year of chaos.

He reached the Ro4 at IEM Cologne, Dreamhack Summer and IEM Shenzhen. He failed to escape the Ro32 in WCS Season 1 and 2, and was a casualty of the Season 3 Group of Death. He won Lone Star Clash against Polt. He flopped in a tournament crafted from his dreams, the ZvZfest that was TWOP. He won WEC against Snute, after advancing from a KeSPA-less qualifier. Somehow, he qualified for Blizzcon. There was no grand scheme, no destiny, no architect. Only Jaedong and a future undetermined.

Perhaps there was a sense of anticipation for his reemergence as a title contender, especially among the astute who had noticed the cycle. Northcon was the inauguration that wasn't, and 2014 has proven that the Tyrant does not live by the rhythm of some ethereal force. He has been freed from the chains of expectations, and only he can determine what happens next. Perhaps he will return to Korea once his current contract ends and play in Proleague where his career began. Perhaps he will stay with Evil Geniuses and continue to tour the world as he prioritizes life experiences. Perhaps it will be something else entirely, a path unknown. One thing is certain: Jaedong will fight.

Jaedong is the paragon of perseverance, the saint of stubbornness. There is no mountain he is unwilling to climb, and there is no barrier he is unwilling to break. He has become a role model in a sit-down sport because of a work ethic incomparable. His life as a progamer has seemed like a bizarre loop, but it appears that the cycle has been broken. He is no longer the best player in the world, no longer a kong, no longer an invalid. He is just Jaedong, last year's Blizzcon runner up. And he knows that there is only one way to do better than that.

Being able to be competitive in today's SC2 after being a veteran in the decline in BW (First title 7 years ago, dang!) is already a true achievement that is often overlooked.

Even if he got his place by being the "less bad" of the rank 16-20 in WCS points ladder, he deserve a huge amount of respect whatever happens in Blizzcon.
Dear INno and all the former STX boys.

Sorry JD, you did too little this year to convince me. To be honest, JD is IMO the least deserving player based on performence...

That being said, I hope you don't die too hard vs Bombjwa!

The fact that his highest point is 375 says enough - invites and a lot of poor tournament runs...

JaeDong is for me the greatest esports athlete ever to have been. Would be a shame if he doesn't deliver, he is however up against a beast in Bomber in a time, where Terrans are dominating.

Wow lichter that was fantastic to read, thank you so much. I got goosebumps at the end! I know almost nobody believes in Jaedong, but I do. He was expected to fail last year, but then beat Maru and Dear when they were by most regarded as the strongest of their races. So if anything you never know how good Jaedong will perform, that's what makes being a Jaedong fan so hard these days, but that's also what gives me hope .

And regardless of his performances, he worked harder than anybody to get to BlizzCon, traveling all year long, because he just wants it that much, nobody wants to win BlizzCon as much as Jaedong after last year's final.

So go Lee Jae-Dong, go and get that title!!!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I feel the same.
I always liked that Jaedong with good preparation can beat anyone in important matches.
This is the difference between Legend and others.

after spending tons of money to send jeadong to as many wcs point stops EG finally got a qualified player for WCS. Yes he deserves it too but put in any top 50 korean into the same position and they would qualify too. Thats why I cant be that impressed.

But GL HF, hope he wins this thing. He deserves everything

Precisely! He is the main reason I switched to sc2 2 years ago and that I still watch and play games from time to time.

except the two you mentioned, not a single legend from kespa and barely any other a-teamers are worth anything in sc2, and stork only is code A/B level aswell. nobody knows how good or bad jaedong would've been if he stayed with kespa. i think he would've declined more personally, as playing all those tournaments in 2013 seemed to really help him.

No mention of the Golden Mouse?! :'(.

In any sport, real fans stick by their teams/players regardless of their success. JD is my favorite player of all time! Flash had his number though. In terms of skill, I always thought:

1. Flash
2. Jaedong

JD was my favorite player in BW, even over GoD himself, Flash. His play truly was zerg like, endless stream of units that just ran over his opponents. It was like witnessing a monster ravage a poor helpless person.

i honestly believe JD is the greatest BW player that the game has produced. His nickname used to be 'legend killer' because he brought down all the legends. His dominance was thwarted by Flash later down the road, but I don't give credit to that because broodwar S-class TvZ is not very balanced, and Zerg has a hard time against an elite Terran. That's just the nature of the matchup. Add in the fact that the other race's maestro was Bisu, a " PvZ God" specialist, who Jaedong de-throned, and Jaedong dominated in ZvZ, the most luck-based mirror matchup that allows any no-name Zerg to beat an elite Zerg because of the nature of the matchup. If JD played a race that allowed him the greatest flexibility, most cost efficiency, and best matchups, would he have been able to beat Flash? No one knows. But I'm not impressed with Terran legends, simply of the nature of BW at those levels.

Jaedong destroying Hwasin with the ridiculous mass mutas, killing Bisu at his height in Blue Storm, coming back from 2-0 at Finals vs. Fantasy, using innovative Queens, etc. will always be a memory to us old BW veterans. Jaedong will always be a legend.

Jaedong is the master of 2nd place finishes. Which is a great accomplishment. often overlooked.

The fact that he could do so well with such a volatile race is pretty amazing.

Great Pros manage to stay in the game in spite of changes and roll with the patches. It's almost a new game every expansion and patch but somehow the same folks still win.

Would be hilarious if he makes 2nd this time too though...

Legends are legends because they will be remembered forever for what they did
JD is a legend, what comes afterwards cannot change the past.
About the end of cycle card... its prolly a good sign, his play cannot get worse (with his skill i cannot understand how he can lose that often O_O) so a change can only be good (he is not retiring right?)
Or maybe he is death incarnate and will kill everyone
In PvZ the zerg can make the situation spire out of control but protoss can adept to the situation.

For those interested about the BW scores between Flash, Bisu and Jaedong:

Pretty sure they were something like this

Flash vs Jaedong score = 24 : 24

Jaedong vs Bisu score = 12 : 16

Flash vs Bisu score = 12 : 8

IDK about the rest - but NO - Flash didn't have JD's number - they were EVEN after 48 clashes of them two..

Would've liked for TL to have that data somewhere "stored", but I was interested to check it before TL completely switched to SC2.. I was interested in the only-BW scores.. Flash was too long in a slump in SC2 however, and JD had his shining line, but never shining bright, and another fact that his career continued outside of KeSPA

So = Right now - yes - Flash would probably win, but it was a far greater rivalry than people tend to think.. In fact - JD had his "suckballz" team always running by himself TBH haha

Death for Jaedong's Stare?

Also, I've noticed that the Bomber Card link is broken. It just sends you to the top of the page.

i honestly believe JD is the greatest BW player that the game has produced.

IDK about the rest - but NO - Flash didn't have JD's number - they were EVEN after 48 clashes of them two..

Would've liked for TL to have that data somewhere "stored", but I was interested to check it before TL completely switched to SC2.. I was interested in the only-BW scores.. People often talk about only three, Flash, Jaedong, Bisu. but forgot about Stork, poor him . They are TBLS and they go together. Stork is the only one that has the best record against other three

Stork - Flash : 13 wins - 14 losses
Stork - Jaedong: 14 wins - 13 losses
Stork - Bisu: 15 wins - 10 losses

The thing to note is, despite being an "average" PvZ player. Stork managed to had JD's number and produced so many good PvZ games against the best Zerg in the world, JD. Stork was ridiculous at god level when playing against JD lol. Damn I miss this game, still there is no SC2 game that has the same level like this one

Cheering for Jaedong all the way. Hope he will get his throne back!!!!

Well if he wins his first match then he has a pretty good shot at winning the whole thing. Only problem is that first match........

I simply meant that Flash was one of the few players who could consistently beat JD, not that he dominated him. Interesting numbers though. I'm not trying to fuel a debate, but it would be more interesting to put the 24 - 24 number into context of "best of" series between them. Here are the major tournaments where they met since 2010...

WCG 2010 (Minor note: WCG is arguably "less important" to Pro-gamers)
1. JD
2. Flash

2010 Korean Air OSL
1. Flash
2. JD

2010 Big File MSL
1. Flash
2. JD

2010 Hana Daetoo MSL
1. Flash
2. JD

Nate MSL
1. JD
2. Flash

2009/2010 Ever OSL
Flash knocked Jaedong out.

My memory is a bit short, since JD won more before 2009, but it "feels" like Flash has had the upper edge due to more recent victories. I excluded pre-2010 because it supports my point better :D. In terms of raw skill, what always impressed me about Flash is that he was the only player (that I know of) who ever had a 70% win percentage against all races at one time. Here are the most recent BW stats for them both:

Flash:
vT: 73.30%
vZ: 72.02%
vP: 69.70%

Jaedong:
vT: 63.00%
vZ: 72.89%
vP: 67.38%

Incredible numbers. They're both amazing players and my top 2 favorites!! Definitely helped me get into SC2 more now that they're in decent shape.

I used to love Stork, but it felt like he would lose at the most disappointing times!! Stork fans (myself included) were always on an emotional roller coaster :/. My fondest memory of Stork was carriers vs Flash (I don't remember the tourny right now).

I'm a big fan of Jaedong, I really want him to succeed and win. I do believe that Jaedong can come into Blizzon in god mode and destroy. BUT I'm at least as much of a Bomber fanboy, what can I say Bombers play just mesmerizes me.

These two are my favorite players at Blizzcon and they meet first thing, I honestly don't know who to cheer for and feel really sad knowing one of them has to be knocked out. Jaedong goes into it coming from somewhat of a slump and Bomber comes into as the king, JDs chances look bleak. If Jaedong was up against any other player I would believe! But against Bomber i find it hard, I do try to but its hard.

They're still there. TLPD -> BW (Korea).

Flash 25-24 Jaedong

Flash is overall the more accomplished player, holding 6 Starleague titles (only equaled by Nada) and the record ELO peak vs every race. That's not just TvsX, that's XvsX. Flash earned the nickname god in his prime, smashing both starleagues simultaneously whilst dominating proleague. I think it was something like 6 consecutive starleague finals (won 4).

That said I love JD too. He was the biggest rival for Flash and they were neck and neck in H2H. Really hope he can go deep in this tournament as I doubt there's anyone else who can bring as much hype.

Jaedong is probably the most hard working esports athlete in history.
One just needs to look at his games from BW and SC2, he doesn't have any inherent talent. So when it's clear he has not practiced enough he just looks horribly bad and lost. There is nothing saving JD from a loss when he doesn't have had enough practice.

He has reached the top of SC2 in 2013 due to sheer practice. He should be the idol of every esports player

I hope so too. If, and only if, he leaves EG and goes back to Korea and has a Proleague/GSL practice regime again, I think he can still be the best. Fingers crossed!

Harsh article!

JD deserves nothing but respect, what other SC legend transferred over? Flash? Nah!

Although he probably does not deserve to be in top 16, he definitely does not deserve such a biased article really trying to piss on his grave. Not cool TL, not cool.

GO, GO, JAEDONG! NEVER SAY DIE!

Last Global Finals...no one thought you would make a decent placing, there was doubt at every turn, yet still you made it to the TOP, producing one of the best semis the game has ever seen!

I honestly think, all things considered, that was the best semi final ever. Jaedong winning against the odds, the score being 3:2, the way he won the last map and especially how he walked out to crowd and the way they reacted. What a perfect moment.

Edit: Damn I was talking about Jaedong vs Dear and that wasn't a semi but a quarter :D Well best quarter final ever then, Jaedong vs Maru was pretty sick too.

"Devil" has sexuality as a keyword, so I don't see how Jaedong missed out on that one. Though "Death" fits him nicely too.

Last year, we had the Season 3 finals just before Blizzcon, and JD crashed out of that really fast. His first opponent at Blizzcon was Mvp, who he was generally expected to beat, but that's as far as he should've gone. Until it turned out that, against all odds, it was him who handed Dear his first offline Bo5+ series loss in an epic quarter final series, and then continued to beat Maru who was on fire himself.

His record this year is actually pretty comparable to last year, but seemingly only turning it up when playing tournaments without many WCS points. Still, he's been playing a little shaky ever since IEM Cologne at the start of the year, and it felt like he wasn't the JD who performed really well near the end of last year. But at the last Dreamhack, even though he lost to eventual champion Solar, JD was actually playing less shaky than he had in a while. Combine that with Bomber mentioning JD is "back in Tyrant form", and I'm convinced he shouldn't be underestimated.

He's been a progamer for almost a decade now, reaching around 20 premier finals along the way, and around 30 semi-finals. He definitely knows what it's like to be clutch, and I'm convinced he will give it his all for Blizzcon. Now, Bomber is a tough match-up for him stylistically, but given how long he has to prepare just for Bomber next weekend, I don't think he will just roll over and die, but we'll see. I like Bomber and wouldn't mind to see him continue on, but I'd love for JD to prove that him being here isn't a fluke. Let's see what happens!
